Hi,

The only current recording of Nic's is "Penguin Eggs" which is available on the Topic label. He is, however, getting material together to release an album himself. So far there's enough for three CDs!! Nic isn't on the net so If you want to find out more you may be best to get a message to him via Pete Coe who is in contact with him quite often. You can contact Pete through his web site at :
http://www.backshift.demon.co.uk/petehome.htm

Hope this helps,

Daisy.

Michael Raven's out of print _English Folk Guitar_ has direct transcriptions of some of Nic's work from his first two albums "Songs and Ballads" and "Nic Jones." Though OOP, it might still be available from the English Folk Dance and Song Society at Cecil Sharp House in London. There's also another solo album besides the two mentioned and the aforementioned pair: "From the Devil to a Stranger" and the group Bandoggs' one album features Nic.

i have recently found Nic Jones music and have been completely bowled over by it. I bought the only available album, Penguin Eggs, and since then I have managed to track down a couple of tapes. I'm not sure what I have got on these tapes. They are obviously not THE NOAH'S ARK TRAP, since I have a track listing for that. Has anyone a track listing for the other three albums - Nic Jones, Songs and Ballads, and From The Devil To a Stranger, so that I can identify what I've got? Thanks, Nigel

Thanks Wolfgang. I checked out the information you directed me to and realise that I have NIC JONES and FROM THE DEVIL TO A STRANGER. neither of them reaches the sublime heights of PENGUIN EGGS but, nonetheless there are some fine things on them. I'm looking forward to tracking down THE NOAH'S ARK TRAP. It's also great news that a new album is pending according to his ex-Bandogg colleague, Pete Coe.

There is a web page for Nic Jones (not done by him) at http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Campus/8529/nicjones.htm

Its worth checking out but the lyrics here are not transcribed from Nic's recordings and in some cases such as Canadee-i-o are completely different so must have been "lifted" from other places such as the DT (thats not a critism by the way)

It does however, give the track listings from Nic's solo Albums and the artwork from most of the Covers. There are other odd tracks of Nics on other LPs such as the 50th Fellside Album "Flash Company" so this isn't a definitive list of his recordings.

From: jehill

The CD is of previously unreleased recordings prior to Nic's 1982 accident. Its great news that something "new" is being realeased. Nic only made 5 solo albums and only his last "Penguin Eggs" is available on CD. I saw Martin Carthy on Saturday and he said that someone is sitting on the other four and won't allow them to be released on CD. This is bad news as there are many who have only just "discovered" Nic and would love to have his work in their collections. Lets just hope that this gets rectified before too long.

You would've thought I had made a bad joke. Seems there is no to get that in Peru, Illinois. Anybody know if securing a IMO can be done by mail or e-mail or on the phone ot what???

I feel silly asking this at my advanced age, but either one knows or one doesn't; I don't! Not proud, just truthful!

Hello People....

The poisoned chalice has been handed to me to try and organise the next Nic CD......(ie. the one after "In Search of....") I'm looking to find any Peel sessions from 1972-1979 that any of you might have recorded (illegally, I might add!!) from the Radio......I have some of his later work, but, as usual, the Beeb decided that the tape was worth more than it's contents!!! and cosequently wiped the Masters!!!

If you have such tapes, E me, and I will take you to court, punish you severely, or, buy you a beer, depending on the quality of the tapes!!!!

Yes. It's a crying shame that Celtic Music won't release the master tapes of the early albums to Nic's family, They're not the wealthiest of people, and a few royalties over the years would have been nice.

After such a horrendous accident, you'd think that commercial profit making wouldn't be the priority of caring people would you. (maybe I'm being over-cynical here)

Nonetheless, although a bit sillier than he used to be, Nic is starting to play guitar again, and he's a demon at pool! (4-1, the swine!!)

E mail me, if you should feel inclined.

Best Wishes to all

Ralph.Jordan@bbc.co.uk

PS. Oh, Check out the New CD by "The Fraser Sisters" on the No Masters label.......Mmmmm...Nice! (shameless plug over!)

A terrific tribute album has just been released on Zero Hour Records by John Wesley Harding. It is called Trad Arr Jones and it is Wes' tribute to Nic Jones' arrangements, song choices and performances. In the liner notes Wes talks about his love of Nic's work and his desire to honour the man's career, including his songwriting. The tracks are: THE SINGER'S REQUEST, LITTLE MUSGRAVE, THE GOLDEN GLOVE, ANNACHIE GORDON, THE FLANDYKE SHORE, WILLIAM AND NANCY'S PARTING, WILLIAM GLENN, THE BONNY BUNCH OF ROSES, MASTER KILBY, ANNAN WATER, ISLE OF FRANCE. I first heard of Nic Jones from Stan Rogers and immediately went out in search of Nic and found From the Devil to a Stranger and was immediately hooked.

As I perform in the UK about once a year I decided to stop in to see Nic and Julia one late night in June 1999 and bought several copies of In Search of... Nic Jones. (Well worth it!!!) and I also had a chance to sit down and talk with them for a few hours. They are wonderful people and Nic, although he did play a few bars of things and showed me a few things I am still attempting to incorporate, he kept trying to get me on a chess board which I had to refuse because apparently he knows his way around the board as well as he knows his way around the neck of a guitar. In fact he says his guitar fared better than he did, regarding the accident. It only broke its neck!

But if you can find any of Nics other lps anywhere you might try Little Pot Stove Records c/o "John Dalton"

I'm not sure if any are listed but it might be well worth a search.

And as far as Canadie-i-o he uses the c modal tuning which is CGCGCD. (I asked if I might be able to record this and both he and Julia were kind and said I was quite welcome to it as well as others which they would be quite happy to let me know where they came from.) (You can also check one of the back issues of Folk Roots Magizine for a few more details on Nic and some of his songs and tunings.

Cheers,

Dan

NEVER let Nic play you at any strategy based board game.... he is lethal! I spent some time in a very wet Wadebridge festival with him, and he is merde chaud at those games. Glad to hear he's doing OK, he was great fun to be with then, ooo, 15 years ago now? It wasn't that long after the accident anyway... witnessed a 'reunion' with him and Tony Rose, what a day! Still can't hear the Bonny light horseman without remembering it.

Chrispark...M Ted...et al
Rest assured that Nics family would be very unhappy with people downloading MP3 files of the "Lost" albums...As am I
Bootlegging is odious anyway, but, particularly in the case of Nic....
As the producer of "Unearthed" I am as angry as all of you when it comes to the reluctance of certain parties to give back what is rightfully Nics...to Nic....But, so it goes.
By this persons antics (se threads too numerous to name), Nic and his family have been denied their rightful royalties on his music, for nearly 20 years, (The anniversary of the crash is any day now)
The financial result for a crippled man with two young children, was horrendous.
This is precisely the reason that Dave Emery and myself have persued the "Archive" projects.

Oh Yes, I am angry....but at least all the profits from "In Search of" and " Unearthed" go direct to the family.
If you have any conscience at all, but can't resist the temptation of downloading MP3 files, could I urge you, as Noreen says, to write a cheque to Mollie Music?

GUEST,jons@onetel.net.uk, can you give details on how the royalties were paid, to whom, etc? Also, are these transfers done by Leader/Celtic Music or by yourself? I know that they've been selling CDRs of "Ballads and Songs" for some time, but wasn't aware that "Nic Jones" was available anywhere. Did you make them and send a check off to Celtic Music paying for royalties, or what? And when you say "paperwork" do you mean original liner notes?

I'll send you an email about this as well, but if you check the forum, it might make sense to let people here know too.

G'day Michael,

If you're after Ballina Whalers, by Harry Robertson (also author of Wee Pot Stove, recorded by Nic Jones as "Penguin Eggs") - it's in the Digital Tratition (DT), the 'Cat's song database (... as posted by me in 2000 ... ?) at Ballina Whalers.

Unfortunately Harry's tune doesn't seem to have made it into the DT as a MIDI. I can supply that to an e-mail address (and maybe should stir up MMario ... Mudcat's tune chaser ... to get a basic MIDI attached to Harry's words.

Didn't dare start another thread.
But...News from the Jones camp. there will be another release from the Jones archive on TOPIC records (Oct 2006).
The track listing is similar to the other two releases (In search of, and Unearthed) but as far as I know, this new release contains many alternative versions. Haven't heard it myself yet, but a big thanks to good old Topic for doing it. Anything that keeps Nics memory alive has got to be be a good thing. (We still haven't given up on getting the first 4 albums back)

No Problems with buying this CD. Full agreement with the family amd Tony Engle (Topic)..

Now, Mr Bulmer.....What about the original albums?

So, Buy it and enjoy it...I will, even though I've heard nearly all of it before!!

Hoblander, I don't know how often you listen to the low quality samples on many "shop" type websites, but many of them sound like that. That isn't realy a fair test of quality. That you may already have a similar version of the track on a different CD is a reason for not buying that I do understand though.

An update is required here....

Nic and family moved from York in 2007 - so the York address given above is no longer correct
(perhaps Joe or someone can alter any reference elswhere on Mudcat that now reads incorrectly on that score?)

Anyone wishing to order CDs from them should write to the Jones family via....
Mollie Music, PO Box 189, Yelverton, PL19 1BA (UK!)
Or via the website http://www.nicjones.net

I would personally urge you to buy direct from the Jones'
own 'Mollie Music' rather than any other source. Thank you.
