Subject: 40 Shades O' Green
From: Celtic-End Singer

I was somewhat surprised not to find this in the database. If anyone has got the full lyrics it would be much appreciated.

FORTY SHADES OF GREEN
Words and music by Johnny Cash
As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash" (1963)

I close my eyes and picture the emerald of the sea
From the fishing boats at Dingle to the shores of Donaghadee.
I miss the River Shannon and the folks at Skibbereen,
The moorlands and the meadows with their forty shades of green.

CHORUS: But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town,
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown.
Again I want to see and do the things we've done and seen,
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalimar and there's forty shades of green.

I wish that I could spend an hour at Dublin's churning surf.
I'd love to watch the farmer drain the bogs and spade the turf.
To see again the thatching of the straw the women glean,
I'd walk from Cork to Larne to see the forty shades of green. CHORUS

Hi,

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but this was written by Johnny Cash.

There is an alternative version for girls......

" But most of all I miss a boy in Tipperary town,, And most of all I miss his arms when evening comes around."

I thought it was Dublin's churning surf, and the straw the women glean.

Hi,

I'm sure we had a thread on this but I can't find it, so here it is again.

FORTY SHADES OF GREEN (J. Cash)

I close my eyes and picture the emerald of the sea
From the fishing boats at Dingle to the shores of Donaghadea
I miss the River Shannon, and the folks at Skibbereen.
The moorlands and the meadows with their forty shades of green.

But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town.
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown.
Again I want to see and do the things we've done and seen
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalamar
And there's forty shades of green.

I wish that I could spend an hour at Dublin’s churning surf
I'd love to watch the farmer drain the bog and spade the turf
To see again the thatching of the straw the women clean
I'd walk from Cork to Larne to see the forty shades of green

But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown
Again I want to see and do the things we've done and seen
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalamar
And there's forty shades of green

Or the alternative.... if being sung by a girl.....

(But most of all I miss a boy in Tipperary town
And most of all I miss his arms when evening comes around.)

and the tune

FORTY SHADES OF GREEN (J. Cash)

I close my eyes and picture the emerald of the sea
From the fishing boats at Dingle to the shores of Donaghadea
I miss the River Shannon, and the folks at Skibbereen.
The moorlands and the meadows with their forty shades of green.

But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town.
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown.
Again I want to see and do the things we've done and seen
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalamar
And there's forty shades of green.

I wish that I could spend an hour at Dublin's churning surf
I'd love to watch the farmer drain the bog and spade the turf
To see again the thatching of the straw the women clean
I'd walk from Cork to Larne to see the forty shades of green

But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town ………..
Again I want to see and do the things we've done and seen
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalamar
And there's forty shades of green

alternatively you can sing....

(But most of all I miss a boy in Tipperary town
And most of all I miss his arms when evening comes around.)

Great Alison, I knew I could rely on you....

I hadn't realised Johnny Cash wrote it, altho' I'm sure my other half knew, being a great fan of his.

Lots of thanks

From: GUEST,Lee

Here's the second verse:

I wish that I could spend an hour
At Dublin's churning surf
I'd love to watch the farmers
Drain the bogs and spade the turf
To see again the thatching
Of the straw the women glean
I'd walk from Cork to Larne to see
Their forty shades of green.

In the first verse, I believe it's "the folks at Skivareen"; also "and the Midlands and their forty ..."

I sing it in C. The chording is far easier.

"May the road rise to meet you, and the wind be always at your back."

It should read

" .. the folks at Skibbereen"

also should read

" . . the moorlands and the meadows"

There is also a "girls" version which replaces

the Bb "girl" of line 5 with a Bb "boy"!

and the next line then reads

"most of all I miss his arms, so brawny and so brown"

Lee

I agree C is much easier.

It says Skipparee in my book, but I think it should be Skibbereen, and Dunadee may be Donaghadee.

The second verse in the book is:
I wish that I could spend an hour in Dublin's churning surf
I'd love to watch the farmers drain the bogs and spade the turf
To see again the thatching of the straw the women glean
I'd walk from Cork to Liam to see the forty shades of green.

I guess Johnny Cash was a bit shaky on Irish geography.

Thank you all who responded. For some reason with certain songs I find I run into a brick wall when trying to fit chords.(probably due to my limited musical ability) Once again thankyou all.

I'd walk from Cork to LAREN to see the forty shades of green?

It is, of course, Larne (not Liam)

Larne is a town in Co Antrim (North East Ireland)
Cork is down south, hence the ".. walk from Cork to Larne" a distance of over 200 miles !!

Hi all- I've got two requests that I hope someone can help with. First off, does anyone know where I can get a midi file with the tune for 'Forty Shades of Green'? And secondly, does any one know what 'Shalamar' is that is referred to in that song?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks and regards,

JPC.

It's a fantastic garden in Lahore, Pakistan. Remnant of the great Mogul civilization, Click here for more info. It is also now the name of a perfume, spelled Shalimar.

I have the tune in a book of Irish songs, but I think my daughter took it to school for a project. If I ever get it back I could make you a midi. There are chords in this thread Lyr/Chords Req: forty shades of green.

The Shalimar is a river, but I can't find it in my Atlas - maybe Africa. There was a Victorian drawing-room ballad "Pale Hands I Loved Beside the Shalimar". And THE HIPPOPOTAMUS SONG(Mud, Glorious Mud) by Flanders & Swan starts " A bold hippopotamus was standing one day, by the banks of the cool Shalimar"

Thanks all. I had done some looking around and I had found those gardens in Pakistan. However the spelling for those is 'Shal-I-mar' and every set of lyrics that I can find for Forty Shades spell the word Shal-A-mar. Is this just an extremely widespread spelling error?

At the site I linked to above, it is spelled with an A.

There are some mondegreens in the DT transcription of this song. I can't find printed lyrics, but this is what I hear, gleaned from recordings by Foster & Allen and some guy named Seamus Kennedy.
Any other corrections? Any towns spelled wrong?

FORTY SHADES OF GREEN
(Johnny Cash)

I close my eyes and picture the emerald of the sea,
From the fishing boats at Dingle to the shores of Donaghadea.
I miss the River Shannon and the folks at Skibbereen,
The moorlands and the meadows and the forty shades of green.
But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town,
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown.
Again I long to see and do the things we've done and seen,
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalimar
And there's forty shades of green.

I wish that I could spend an hour at Dublin's churning surf;
I'd love to watch the farmers drain the bogs and spade the turf;
To see again the thatching of straw the women glean.
I'd walk from Cork to Larne to see the forty shades of green.
But most of all I miss a girl in Tipperary town,
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown.
Again I long to see and do the things we've done and seen,
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalimar
And there's forty shades of green.

Here are the words and chords from the Johnny Cash Show Souvenir Picture and Song Book, Copyright 1966 Southwind Music, NY, NY. -- The souvenir album sold at JR's shows in those days. I just listened to him and then Roseanne sing it on YouTube. They both sang slightly different words, noteably "meadows" for "midlands". They both played it with 3 chords in G, no C#dim or Dm7.

It's often overlooked that Cash wrote many fine songs.... Rosanne re-recorded 'Tennesse Flat Top Box'.. she knew her father had a hit with it years before, but only found out in the studio that he'd written it as well...

I learned this tune from a lady in the snug of a pub in Bandon Ireland. She also gave me Cash's sheet music so I thought it had been written by him.

I found this on a thread from a couple of years ago, posted by a Guest.

(See thread)

"I'm sorry to say that I DO NOT think that Johnny Cash actually wrote the song Forty Shades of Green. Everywhere I look it says the idea came to him while he was flying over Ireland...but it didn't. I know the man who actually wrote that song. There was a man in Ireland, Father Patrick Coughlin, who would write songs and then sing them at local pubs. One day he sang that song at a pub where the right person heard it and he either gave johnny Cash the song or he stole it (not like he would have wanted the royalties for it..that's not who he was)...either way Johnny Cash did not actually write that song. My great Uncle Paddy did and that story has been told and will continue to be told by everyone who knew and/or is related to this wonderful man and I thought it should be said for everyone to see...."

The "Shalimar" in the lyrics might not be a place, but a perfume: "Where the breeze is sweet as Shalimar..."
