BS: S.O.S - Computer Cretin says HELP!

Hi there!

I haven't been around much lately so maybe I've got a bit of a nerve asking for help but, I've got a real problem with the old 'Puter.

I was looking through my McAfee online services yesterday and noticed "Online Oilchange" which is supposed to download the latest versions of whatever software you have on the puter. Great I thought, I'll do that.

Now when I start up I get the following dialoge box:

! Error Starting Program
File linked to missing export SETUPAPI.DLL:SetupDiGetDeviceInterfaceDetailA.

The only option it allows is the "OK" Button.

Also the machine is now slower than the second coming, the curser is about 3 characters behind my typing and the whole thing keeps freezing up!

HEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!

Any Ideas???????

Also, on another front, for some time now, I can only get my "and ' keys to work if i follow them with a space.

Is that familiar to anyone.

I waite with bated breath for any assistance.

thanks in advance

....sounds like 'oilchange' is trying to update some program that no longer exists...or something that is corrupt..or things have moved..or from websites that have died,,,or there is so much to 'update' that it is taking forever...etc...does that 'ok' button still come up each time? Or, if you can, email McAfee and ask 'em...(I get a similar problem when I try to install "Paltalk"...just sits & whirrs)..

wow....do them programs one-at-a-time!

Comes up every time I reboot, which I have to do about every half hour at the moment. I'm seriously thinking of doing a QUICK RESTORE with my salvage disk.

Just waiting for Pene to get back to me first. He's been helping me with PM's.

Bugsy:

I don't recognize anything specific about your problem, but in many cases of computer slowdown you are likely to find an accumulation of temp (temporary) files on the machine.

Assuming that you are using some version of Windows(?) you can get some cleanup by going through the routine:

Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup.

The Disk Cleanup routine should show you how much disk space is being used by temp files and temporary Internet files. It is generally safe to OK and delete them all. This routine should not delete "cookies," so you have to handle them separately.

I don't know if this will help with your McAfee blip. An email to them is probably your best bet there. But it might help clear some of the slowdown.

Hi John, Yes I've done the scandisk and defrag etc.

I think that a restore is the answer though

Bugsy:

As I said, I don't know that it will help, but Scandisk and Defrag only make sure that the files that are there are in good shape. The other routine, Disk Cleanup, actually gets rid of some of the excess (useless) files, and might help your speed.

Restore is a pretty drastic step. It usually gets rid of EVERYTHING you may have added to your drives. Backup everything first, if that's what you decide to do.

If you're going to restore the programs, of course you don't necessarily need to back them up. You should try to get all of your data off the hard drive though.

In Start - System - Add/RemovePrograms you can sometimes "overlay" a restore of corrupt Windows files without reformatting, but some vendor's CDs do a hard drive reformat when you do a restore. That erases everything.

Wish I could offer more help, but I'm afraid I haven't seen anything that really resembles your basic problem with McAfee.

if you have windows me you can go to start, run and then type in msconfig...and then do a restore from there...what that will do is reset the computer settings you had to an earlier time...like prior to the time the problems started....
