Can someone post the lyrics (and chords, even?) to
"Mir Zaynene Ale Brider" (We Are All Brothers)?

Thanks.

Genie, try Zemerl. It's a yiddish music site. The song is recorded on "In The Fiddlers House" with Yitzak Perlman. It is also on The 24Th Street Klezmer Bands 1st CD "Bagels and Grits"
If you can't find it on any of those places, PM me and I'll E-Mail you the music. I have it in the bands data base.

Here are the lyrics. Zemerl has an audio.

Lyrics

Translation, etc.

Un mir zainen ale brider,
Oi, oi, ale brider,
Un mir zingen freileche lider,
Oi, oi, oi!

Un mir haltn zich in einem
Oi, oi, zich in einem,
Azelches iz nito bai keinem,
Oi, oi, oi

Un mir zainen ale einik
Oi, oi, ale einik
Tzi mir zainen fil tzi veinik,
Oi, oi, oi

Un mir libn zich doch ale,
Oi, oi zich doch ale,
Vi a chosn mit a kale
Oi, oi, oi!

Un mir zainen freilach munter,
Oi, oi, freilach munter,
Zingen lider tantsn unter
Oi, oi, oi!

Un mir zainen ale shvester,
Oi, oi, ale shvester,
Azoi vi Rochl, Ruth, un Ester
Oi, oi, oi

The chorus is:
Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi,
Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi,
Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi,
Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi,
Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi,
Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi.

It's a bit repetitive but at least the lyrics are easy,

Thanks, Troll,

An alternate way of singing the chorus, to make it gender inclusive, was suggested by a man who led a Yiddish workshop at NW Folklife Festival in 1999 or 2000:

Un mir zainen ale brider, Oi, oi, schwester, brider, Un mir zingen freileche lider, Oi, oi, oi!

BTW, for people not familiar with the song, I understand it is an old labor movement song. But it works beautifully as a peace and good will song, too.

It isSHE was acitve in the '60's and '70's. As I said, we learned it from "In The Fiddlers House". I think that the band was probably the Klezmatics.
I have heard Alicia Svigals, the band's fiddler, sing the second verse: "Vi a kale mit a kale".

This is a great song. My women's chorus is singing it this spring, and we're just starting with the "Shvester" verse, then singing the Brider verse second. I can't find anything on the origins other than Genie on 10/01/01. Any sources?

Animaterra, the liner notes to In The Fiddler's House say "This popular folk song is based on the poem "Akhdes" ("Brotherhood") by Morris Winchevsky (1856-1932). It has been a longtime favorite at secular Jewish gatherings and is particularly associated with the Jewish labor movement."

I think the Klezmatics made some alterations/additions to the lyrics when they revived it.

Harvey Niebulski (sp?) in Seattle sings the chorus as:

Un mir zainen ale brider,
Oi, oi, schwester, brider,
Un mir zingen freileche lider,
Oi, oi, oi!

In other words,
We are all brothers,
Yes, yes, sisters, brothers,
And we sing happy songs,
Yes, yes, yes! *

*Yes, I know "Oy" or "Oi" doesn't literally translate as "yes," but I think in context of this song it works, since English doesn't really have a counterpart to "oy!"

These lyrics and a melody line are found in Sounds of the Metropolis: The Nineteenth-Century Popular Music Revolution in London, New York, Paris, and Vienna by Derek B. Scott (New York: Oxford University Press, 2008), page 183:

ALE BRIDER
Music, traditional.
The Yiddish text is based on the poem AKHDES by Morris Winchevsky (1856-1932).

Und mir zaynen ale brider, oy, oy, ale brider.
Un mir halten zikh in eynem, oy, oy, zikh in eynem,
Azelkhes iz nito bay keynem, oy, oy, oy!
Oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, oy, etc.

Rabbi Shira Z Hazeer wrote a new verse for the times:

Un mir veln zikh farzamlen
Oy, oy zikh farzamlen
Tsi in shtub, tsi durkh di ekranen
Oy, oy, oy
Tsi bay Zoom un tsi bay Google
Oy, oy, tsi bay Google
Yeder brengt der eygen kugel
Oy, oy, oy.

(In English:
We will all get together
Whether at home or through the screens
Whether by Zoom or Google
Everyone bring your own kugel)
