20th.-21st. October...at the Open Door Folk Club, Oldham Road, Failsworth there will be, as the club organizers describe it, a mini-extravaganza. Saturday afternoon kicks off with a singaround followed at 3pm with an afternoon concert featuring Brian Peters and Joe Stead. An evening concert features Jez Lowe. The same routine follows on the Sunday when, in the afternoon, Joan Blackburn and Jon Brindley will be appearing to be followed in the evening by Pete Coe. Ticket prices are £12 for the weekend (bought on the day) or £7 for Saturday or Sunday tickets. Children under 12 are free and under 18's half price. You can get more info off Pauline Westall on 0161 681 3618 ( you can,t e-mail her 'cos her computers died!) Sorry for the barrage of information but I had to slam it down in case my clicky link thingy doesn,t work.....I'm pretty new at this! Cheers, Harry.

My pleasure, Noreen...hope to see you there. Incidentally, in my initial excitement at the clicky thing I forgot to mention the name of the pub the Open Door's held at which is the Bull's Head on Oldham Road. Silly me!

Mmm...let me see...the Bath Hotel, Oldham; The Gallows in Milnrow; The Ring o, Bells, Middleton...places like that, John. If you ever get over here to see relatives or anything it would be nice to see you. All the best Harry.

I went to the Ring o Bells in Middelton now and again. I guess I mostly went to the Fishermans Inn at Hollingworth Lake. If/when we get back over there, we will certainly be looking for some Folk Clubs in the Manchester area. Associated Mudcatters too of course. Good luck with the Festival. JohnB

Well, folks, what a great little club!!

Went there for the first time this evening (Sunday Oct 7th) and thoroughly enjoyed every minute!

A really genuine, friendly atmosphere - I felt as though I'd been going there for years after the first ten minutes - given my unstable mental state over the past couple of years, that's praise indeed...

Thanks, Harry, for posting this thread - the 'Open Door' is a club with a very strong future, and I'll be a regular, that's for sure!

If you haven't been, yet, get down there and find out what you are missing!!

It's not far from Junction 21 of the M60 - at the top of the slip road turn right along Broadway, and right again at Oldham road (A62) - it's slap bang on the Failsworth/Newton Heath border...

See you there?!

And was the gorgeous Jez still gorgeous-somebody needs to give the mudcat women a report otherwise our hormone levels may get out of hand! Did he sing his new songs In my Trade is absolutely phenomenal. Geordie please do my drooling for me by all means, just clear up the mess afterwards!

I am not realy qualified to report on Jez Lowe being a mere male but I did buy his double CD.

He was superb doing a mixture of old and new but not New Trade. I was close enough to get some reflected glory.

Told him Linda Kelly thought he was wonderful and if his CD was not at least as wonderful I wanted my money back - We N Easterners speak the same language. Cheers John

Harry, you and your friends are to be congratulated on the show you set up yesterday (Saturday.) Yvonne and self really had a good time and are considering setting up 'The Open Door Appreciation Society'! What exceptional talent flows through those doors. Your pal who sported jazzy ties (two of them) is a cracking performer with voice and 'Erica'. He has now two devoted groupies over here and we don't even know his name.

The generous hospitality you extended was kindly received and we do hope to see you again, either at the Railway or on your home ground. The memory of all those really powerful and expressive voices will remain with us for many a year. Altogether lovely,

HelenJ. P.S. Sent message earlier but it hasn't registered ho - hum.

Just got back from Failsworth. Excellent day. Slightly laid back version of yesterday.

Joan from Wigan as usual did a super job doing two spots aftr the first singaround.

John Brindley followed with a very varied performance from traditional ballads to virtuoso guitar AND fiddle to Bob Dylan. Would be happy to see again.

Thanks to all the organisers for a great do. John

Thanks for the really warm welcome and superbly organised event! It was great to put more faces to cookies!

Adding to what GB has already said, Pete Coe was brilliant in the evening slot - singing a superb mixture of songs and tunes. How does he sing, play banjo or bazouki and dance AT THE SAME TIME!!!

We're really sad that we weren't there on Saturday, it sounds like we missed a treat.

Thanks again, Sue vG

PS Bob is still doing a lop-sided hamster impression, if anything his face is even more swollen, he's off to the dentist in the morning!

PPS Ickle, I don't think I wore anything out of your song book or sang any of your clothes, mind you that weathered corduroy dress sounds like a cue for a song!

Hope to see you all soon...and I'm so pleased Noreen's got her smile back!

Harry, I used to use the phrase "I'm sorry, people don't speak to me like that, I'm a very nice person!" when I was being abused as a teacher. (Usually obnoxious parents) I found that it usually took the wind out of angry people 'cos there isn't really an answer, is there? It sort of became my catch phrase and other staff would say it as a joke. Thank you for reminding me!

Thank you for the kind words, John, I really enjoyed myself, and it was lovely to see so many friends I've not seen for a while, and meet some new ones. I was sorry to have to leave early, but the trains don't run at convenient times from Failsworth to Wigan (or for that matter from anywhere to anywhere, but that's another story...). Top marks to Pauline and her team for organising a very enjoyable weekend, and here's hoping there'll be many more!

Whoever was trying to find out what a chicken on a raft was, well I asked Archie Tawney and he said that it was a boiled egg on fried toast. apparently in the Navy the fried egg goes soggy after waiting for the egg.
