Chantey sing 20th anniv. & Fest, San Fr.

Saturday, November 3rd, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park will hold the 20th anniversary celebration of our monthly chantey sing, from 8pm to midnight During that day, there will be a festival honoring the 150th anniversary of the publication of Moby Dick. There'll be traditional music all day, and readings from Moby Dick by actor Patrick Stewart among others. Free admission to the festival.

The chantey sing will be, as always, open to the public free of charge, but reservations are required (415) 556-6435. It will be in the hold of the schooner C.A. Thayer and will include Louis Killen, Shay Black, Celeste Bernardo-Dunn, Jan Christensen, Daphne Glover, Dick and Carol Holdstock, Mariide, Dave Nettell, Bruce Sherman, The Dogwatch Nautical Band, The S.O.B's (that's their band name, alright), Mudcatters Barry Finn, Rev, Riggy, Radriano, Dave and Pam Swan, (bringing along Oak, Ash and Thorn), Melani, Skip Henderson (with his band The Starboard Watch), and Elise.

The chantey sing's begginnings go back to when a group of about 30 people who had attended one of the park's early festivals hung back after the close to have a singing session. Rather than waiting til next year's fest, they decided to meet more regularly, and in 1981 those chantey sings became a regular monthly park-sponsored program. Over the years, the chantey sing has seen kids grow into adulthood and has nurtured many people through the "rite of passage" of singing in public for their first time. This will be a time for the sing's many participants over the years to reunite, to meet new people, and to be together during this time of turmoil.

All are welcome. If any other 'Catters would like to make the trip out here, we'll see if other local 'catters have couch space, or PM me and I can give you some info on convenient and inexpensive motel accomodations. Hope to see you there!

Note to our local Mudcat sea music community: If anyone's willing to loan guitars to visiting performers who are flying out here, to use during their sets during the day's fest, it would save them hassles over handling them on planes. Let me know and I'll contact them. Jan Christensen is looking for a 12-string guitar. Anyone got one he could use?

Only four hours to sing with that crowd? Come on, there's got to be an after hours continuation. Sounds like I might make it if I can figure out where to stay.

Sorry guys but your Mudcat names just crack me up...in Scotland 'chantey' (with the ch pronounced as in church) is a word for a toilet, as in " Awa' an' bile yer heid in a chantey!", roughly translated as " Go away!!!!!". Actually Mudcat is the first place I'd seen shanty spelt chantey. Is it from French?

Weepiper, the toilet spelling, as I understand it, is "chanty," without the "E." "Chantey" is the American spelling for the songs, prevalent in American maritime literature, and "shanty" is the British spelling. Some scholars say the American spelling is derived from the French verb meaning "to sing," others say that's just coincidence. Speaking of spelling, a little typo on my post - "begginings" should obviously be "beginnings." Trivial, but I hate making typos.

Chanteymatt, the dsinging sessions/jamming will go from at least 12 noon on Saturday when the music program gets underway, with many of the people mentioned performing sets as well, on the pier stage, aboard ships, in a big tent prior to the readings. I suspect there will be sessions continuing much later than the sing, but we'll have to close the park after the official end of the sing at midnight, except for the performers, so maybe a post-session will move to the Buena Vista Hotel's pub up the block - a chantey sing tadition for after midnight. PM me if you'd like suggestions for accomodations. Hope to see you there. Where would you be coming from?

I should add that the park closes at 5pm at the end of the day's festival, then reopens at 7:30 to let in everyone who called to reserve space for the chantey sing. There'll be volunteers at the gate with the gatelist drawn from the reservations. The sing then begins at 8:00 pm.

Chanteyranger - I'd be coming from Seattle. I got a free ticket from Alaska Airlines.

Melani - Which is more comfortable, the 6 string or the sofa?

It's a pity that I've got to travel to reach an event such as this. Although we have regular chantey sings, we've nothing of this caliber.

Matt--the sofa's not bad, and the guitar has nylon strings.

By the way, Weepiper, "shanty" and "chantey" are both pronounced the same. That is, chantey is not pronounced with the ch as in church. It's an easy mistake to make because you see "chant" in the word. Of course, the original lyrics of most of the shanties do have many "toilet" words in them, if you want to look at it that way.

Joe, I am flushed with pride.

W. Wages, you're on! Let me know if you'd like to volunteer to be on the program for the kids sea music, 2:00-2:45, C.A. Thayer. It'll be round-robin, informal, with Dave Nettell and several others.

'Catters Sourdough and toadfrog have sent messages that they'll be there.

Chanteyranger, do you think we could talk Patrick Stewart into singing that drinking song he sang in a episode of Star Trek Next Generation?

I have just discovered that there will also be kid activities, so you can bring the little monsters and set them to making fake scrimshaw while you take in some music.

Hi Peter, I'm sure you've put me on the shanty list for the evening sing but just in case you didn't want to do anything presumptious, be presumptious please. Thanks. WOW, the list of people going is fantastic. This is gonna be some mighty fine time. Can't wait. See you soon. Barry

We have been trying to think of more whaling-related kid craft activities besides fake scrimshaw. So far, "Pin the Harpoon on Moby Dick" has been rejected as politically incorrect, and trying out blubber and sharpening knives also seem impractical. Any suggestions? ;-)

With some late cancellations there will be a few changes/additions to the schedule. Rev won't be there due to pressing graduate studies, so Radriano and myself will cover his stage slot. The acapella trio "Folk This!" will be in the Thayer's hold 4:00. Riggy and Radriano will be in the whaling songs workshop, which moves to 3:30-4:20. Riggy won't be in the chanteys cousins workshop. Barry's in town now, staying with Pam and Dave Swan. Pam reports on a fine time singing with Barry at their home.
