From: Clifton53 I know this has been covered many times on the 'Cat, but I took my first trip to Mandolin Brothers this morning, and I've never seen that many high quality stringed instruments in one place in my life! Within an hours time, I had played a Breedlove that rattled my cage a bit, a Huss and Dalton that was as pretty sounding as it was visually striking, two resonators, 3 Gibsons, a few Martins, an octave mandolin, you get the picture, my buddy had to drag me out of there. I can't believe I live so close to this place of wonder and have never gone there! A very friendly staff that lets you play 'em all if you want to. The prices were a bit steep I thought, but to have all those new and vintage pieces in one place was astounding. I can't wait to go back. Clifton |

I have purchased 3 guitars there (netted two). A SAnta Cruz Custom Model HH 12 String and a Collings 000-2H. Perfect setup. Clifton, you right. Great staff. Knowledgeable and absolutely not a pain in the ass. Play whatever you want - I once tried a guitar priced at $120,000 just to see what it was like. Cool celeb hangout, too. They appraised a good friend's mandolin, that had been used by her grandmother in an all woman's band. The friend viewed that instrument with alot more respect when she found out details of its history and its value was $2,700. Also, since it had not been built until 1918, it settled the family's question about wether she had played in the band during WW I. |

Anybody within a days travel of Manchester uk should visit Hobgoblin, upstairs at Johnny Roadhouse Music, Oxford Road, Manchester. If it has strings on it will be there. Instruments from all continents from the highest quality to cheap and cheerful stuff. I have seen something that looks like a very big dulcimer. It is played with hammers by 2 people sitting opposite each other, possibly as a prelude to sex? And Ken gives much good advice. I bought a tenor mandola, play it every day it sounds so good even though I am crap. Life is too short to play crap instruments! Cheers Les |

I bought a Gibson guitar and a Flatiron octave mandolin from them, sight unseen, and they were perfect. And, you get a discount if you pay by money order rather than credit card. |

I've bought a few things there including my retirement present to myself, a very unique guitar - a keeper. One of the salesmen, Denny Ryan, plays bass on our Folk-Legacy "Irish in America" CD. He's a lovely guy and has become a good friend. We're doing a benefit together for fallen NYC firefighters later this month. The selection is excellent and the quality is generally very high. Elderly is a little less expensive on average and is also very, very good. They are different businesses with slightly different strengths. Customer service is a priority at each and I like them both very much.

I've never bought an instrument from them, but I have purchased a lot of supplies, books and videos. They also have a tremendous CD catalog with music and artists that are very hard to find elsewhere. Denny Ryan was there the day I went to Mandolin Brothers, and Stan as well. Very pleasant guys and so helpful. I'm taking my Gibson there soon for a set-up job, they inspired THAT much trust in me. Clifton |
