Lyr Add: Singing in the Bathtub (Herb Magidson)

Here are the lyrics for "Singing in the Bathtub". I know of recordings by R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders (short version), Gracie Fields, and Eddie Walters.

I'm trying to learn to learn to play it. Does anyone know the chords that go with it?

Singing in the Bathtub
By Herb Magidson
From the 1929 movie "Show of Shows" .

Singing in the bathtub
Happy once again
Watching all my troubles
Go swinging down the drain

Singing through the soap suds
Life is full of hope
You can sing with feeling
While feeling for the soap.

A ring around the bathtub
Isn't so nice to see
But a ring around the bathtub
Is a rainbow to me

Reaching for a towel
Ready for a rub
Everyone is happy
While singing in the tub

Why am I delighted
Why am I so gay
Why am I excited
Oh, what day is today

Pardon my elation
Everything's all right
I get  inspiration
Every saturday night

Singing in the bathtub
sitting all alone
Tearing out a tonsil
Just like a baritone

Never take a shower
It's an awful pain
Singing in the shower
Is like singing in the rain.

Oh, there is dirt to be abolished
But do not forget one thing
While your body's washed and polished
Sing brother sing!

You can yodel opera
Even while you scrub
Everyone is happy
While singing in the tub.

Look around. Dooley Brothers in Chicago used to do it in the 70's. It was so funny... a 40's song kinda feel to it.... I search for it periodically but if anyone today were doing it, it would probably be Jug People!

Ask and you shall recieve. Actually there is already a thread on Singing in the Bathtub, where I have posted both lyrics and chords from the original sheet music. The Cheap Suit Serenaders do a reduced version, and may use different chord changes as well.

I'd forgotten all about that song. I bought the 1931 recording from a junk shop in the early 70s, when a student. I can't remember who it was by (male), but it really got a grip on me at the time and I used to walk around singing it in my head. It disappeared or got broken many years ago, probably on a house move. Still, I think I got my 10p worth out of it!

(I think that there was a "Bo-do-dio" sung after the first line of each verse in my version).

John Lithgow also does a version of this song that's a good take off Crumb's version with the added lyrics

You can be Sinatra
Soaking while you croon (Doo-be-Doo-be Doooo! [strangers in the night])
Hitting all the high notes
Never out of tune.

Singin' every number
From your favorite show (Oooooooak-lahoma!)
Coming down from Forte
To Pianissimo

My mother sang a pro-shower version!

Singing in the shower,
Happy once again,
Watching all my troubles
Go floating down the drain --
    Drip, drip, drip.

Never take a shower?
Golly, what a pain!
Singing in the shower's
Like singing in the rain.

Winnie Lightner’s version from The Show of Shows (1929)

Why am I delighted
Why am I so gay
Why am I excited
Well, what day is today

Pardon my elation
Everything's just right
I get inspiration
Every Saturday night, I'm

Singing in the bathtub
Happy once again
Watching all my troubles
Go swimming down the drain

Singing through the soap suds
Life is full of hope - soap
You can sing with feeling
While feeling for the soap.

Oh a ring around the bathtub
Isn't so nice to see
But a ring around the bathtub
Is a rainbow to me

Reaching for a towel
Ready for a rub
Everybody’s happy
While singing in the tub

Oh Saturday’s children, unite to the bath!
This is your judgement day!
Now the ordeal begins, so lift up your chins!
And wash all your sins away!

Singing in the bathtub
Sitting all alone
Tearing out a tonsil
Just like a baritone

Never take a shower
It's an awful pain
Singing in the shower
Is like singing in the rain.

Oh, there’s dirt to be abolished
But don’t forget one thing
That while my body's washed and polished
Sing brother sing!

You can yodel opera
Even while you scrub
Everyone is happy
While singing in the tub.
