I used to visit their house when I was keeping company with a merchant seaman. They would talk about the Seaman's Union and he told us stories of organizing and strikes and strife. He was like Studs Terkel...absolutely interested in what I had \to say and would get me talking about things I didn't even know I knew. I also became friends with their daughter, Nancy Schlimmel, who wrote this poem about Bud in 1986...it describes him to a T: My Father Was an Optimist (a poem by Nancy Schimmel)Nancy wrote to me: "Malvina would introduce 'Bury Me in My Overalls' by talking about how her husband was such as good supporter of her work, then she would say: "He got pretty sick one time and I wrote this song. He got better." The "pretty sick" was his first heart attack, when he was around sixty. Wheat finally got him at seventy-seven was not a heart attack, but a stroke. Your first 2 measures have the equivalent of 8 quarter notes in them. z/4, since a 1/4 note is the base, are rests of 1/4 x 1/4 = 1/16 note. Those 7's and 11's don't look right. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the tune to check against yours against. Want to pick something out of a common book (e.g. Lomax's 'Folk Songs of North America) and do an ABC and post it, so we can tell you what's wrong? Jon, can you figure out what's wrong? |

I think we need to holler for ALAN OF AUSTRALIA for help on this one, since I used his program to translate it from MIDI to ABC. When I run the ABC on ABCMUS, it sounds right; but if I use that program to save it as a MIDI file, the tune comes out much more complicated than it needs to be. If I used Alan's TXT2MID and change the red coded part back to a MIDI, it's correct. I guess we have to conclude that there's a flaw in the ABC portion of Alan's MIDITXT program. Alan, can you help us on this? By the way, Bruce, the ABC tune you posted for "O'Donnell Abu" today works perfectly on my ABCMUS, without need for modification. I sent a distress call to Alan, so he's bound to come galloping in on his fiery steed at any moment. If anyone wants the MIDI to fool around with, you can convert it with MIDITXT from the red code above, or I'll be glad to send it to you as an e-mail attachment. Joe-Offer@msn.com |

I finally discovered that my web browser will save, with plain text option, as long as I don't use a file extension. I had tried repeatedly to save as zzz.ABC, but this just gives me back the HTML with the lines double spaced. |

Joe, if you've got MIDI2ABC, try running the MIDI through that and see if the results don't look cleaner. Otherwise, send me the MIDI and NWC files and I'll see if I can get it straight. Jon W. |

More considerations on ABC problems - they seem to happen mostly when converting MIDI output of NoteWorthy Composer. I wonder if NWC outputs something unexpected in its MIDI files. Seems like I remember a problem with this early on which Alan corrected (or did he?). All those 7/4 and 11/4 notes are very strange. |

My Netscape Navigator wouldn't copy to an ASCII file, so I had to take out the HTML tags. That was only a minor problem. The way I got a playable tune follows:

Now, the question is, can I convert Noteworthy MIDI files into Mudcat-ready ABC without going through a lot of editing? I think Alan's program will do it, with a few adjustments. I always use the Windows clipboard to extract tunes from the forum and save them as files. I do this by highlighting the text of the tune only (for example, in my post above, start with the line "% input file miditune\buryover.mid" and highlight down through the body of the music, but not the ending comment "I'm not familiar..."), pressing ctrl-C to copy, then switching to my programmer's editor application and pasting the clipboard contents into a new or existing file (I keep one called mudcat.abc around for this purpose). Then I write the file to disk, fire up ABC2Win (or just PlayQABC in DOS) and play the tune. To make sure this method would work for those not blessed with a programmer's editor, I tried it with MS Word 6.0, and by saving the file as "text only" with an .abc extension, it worked fine. The only problem I have is that somehow each subsequent line after the first begins with a space which I have to delete before saving the file. Also, rarely there is a line which wraps around on the forum screen, so when I copy and paste, it creates a new line where it shouldn't. This happened above with the line that starts out "32nd-notes..." I had to put that part back up on the previous line by deleting the carriage return. When I did that, the tune displayed in ABC2Win and played perfectly. Before I did, I got some error boxes but just pressed "continue" each time and the tune came up with an extra measure at the beginning (ABC2Win was interpreting the extraneous line as music), but still was playable. Bruce, if your ABC2Win can't handle comments (% lines) and the other things, maybe you need a later version. Mine (version 2.1 f) didn't have any problem with them. |

Jon W., I didn't even try to read the % comments (and I probably could have) but I couldn't display anything at that point, and I was interested in getting the tune to play, and stripping the files down to essentials so I could see what was wrong. I would have put Author and copyright notice as N:comment right after the title T:xx, anyway, and deleted the rest as non-essential for an ABC tune. I like to keep my files small. |
