I used to know Jonathan Kelly - he was (is?) a singer/songwriter from Drogheda who moved to London and did some superb stuff in the early seventies. He used to come up to Yorkshire a lot to do gigs or just to visit some friends of mine. He then joined the Jehovah's witnesses and no-one I know has seen him since. The guy was really talented - great voice and lovely songs such as Cursed Anna's Stare, and ..... damn, I can't remember any others off hand - I'll have to rack my brains.

Cheers

I am married to a John Kelly - if you don't find the one you are looking for I am prepared to negotiate a sale for a smallish fee.

Ifmy memory is still functioning properly I think Jonathon Kelly was a stage name and his real name was Ledingham. Perhaps he reverted to it after he gave up the business. There is a Capt. John Ledingham on the Irish Showjumping team, but I don't think he's the one your looking for.

you have no idea how disappointed I am that no one has tried to buy my John Kelly. He would make a perfectly reasonable substitute -house trained and everything.

Any luck finding JK?

I'm a couple of years late joining the conversation, but I've just begun my own search for the man.

First time I saw JK, he was on the bill with Joan Armatrading and an all girl group called Bertha, way back in '72 or 73 at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, North London. The audience would shout for him to sing the song "Anna's Stare" (later I learned the actual title was "Ballad of the Cursed Anna") I became a devoted fan, going to his shows all over London. The last time I saw him, Snowy White was his lead guitarist and his most requested song had become "Stone Junkie".

If you found out anything more on JK, please let me know.

He had a major change of life in the seventies, to do with religious conversion. I believe he now runs a business. I don't want to go into more detail, because I don't suppose he particularly wants to be found.

Thanks for your info on JK, there is nothing sinister in trying to find him. I am a great admirer of his work and having left Belfast in the late 70s to come and live in Yorkshire all i ever heard was "you must listen to JK and twice around the houses, having recently tracked two original copies down my curiosity was bitten as to what happened to such an obvious talented player/songwriter.
Who knows perhaps he may let us know what happened.

Not the same one. Although this one has been around for a long time also. John did a floor spot at the Bothy recently, I hadn't seen him for many years. John is an excellent traditional singer.

Guys, Jonathan Ledingham (aka Kelly) is alive and well and living in Wales I believe. He still plays....maybe only just for fun. You can check out one of his most recent "gigs" at www.holyhead.com/beegees/. No don't ask, just go check it out for yourself. I've been a fan of his music for 30 years, and it's a damn shame the guy never got the credit he deserved for his wonderful songs. There are probably quite a number of loyal fans out there, and I wish there was a way to let him know just how much his music still means.

I've been looking for JK's first LP on Parlophone for many years - can anyone help? A tape or CDR copy would do if you didn't want to part with the vinyl. Failing that does anyone know what the track listing is on this 1970 debut as I can't find that info on the net either.

email me at Pepperthemutt@aol.com   if you can help.

I wish I'd seen him.

Hello Widownmaker,

I know this is about four years too late but in fact proably only one month too late! I travelled over from Holland to see my all-time favourite singer songwriter in concert in Doncaster on wednesday April 20th, 2005. he played a one-off gig for charity to a select group of people who have enjoyed his music of the years and it was a very memorable night.
He is still writing excellent songs and even has his own website. All his albums with the exception of the first one on parlophone are now available on cd and although this was his first billed performance in thirty years I am delighted to report he is in fine shape.
he sang "The Ballad Of Cursed Anna" "Sligo Fair" "Madeleine" and "Down On Me" along with all his other favourites and he was on stage for one and a half hours.
There are photos' of the concert at a website run by Gerald Sables.
Go to a search engine and type in : Music - official Jonathan Kelly website & all should be revealed. Or send me an e-mail f.weston@wxs.nl

I remember Jonathan with great affection. I ran a songwriters folk club in Birmingham and we booked him more than once I'm sure. There was so much talent about in those days and Jonathan was one of the shining stars. I did Cambridge and the Great Western festival the same year Jonathan did.I wondered what had happened to him and the biog on the website tells a story I have seen happen to others too many times. However, it's great to know he avoided the ultimate tragedy and got his life back. It's even greater to know he's gigging again. I really hope I get the chance to say hello one more time. Please say hello to your dad from me Greg.

I guess you are the same Harvey Andrews that I saw support Focus in around 72' at the Empire theatre in Liverpool. According to my notes from that time, you scored quite highly with four out of five. I have to say though that Jonathan Kelly always got a five but maybe I am a bit biased because he is my all-time favourite singer-songwriter.
Nice to know you are well though and I still have a photo I took of you from that gig somewhere I think. I was in the front row.

Best Wishes,

Frank.

I saw Jonathon Kelly live at Aldermaston folk club in 71 or 72 playing a 12 string guitar and performing like nothing I have heard before or since. We bought the record and still treasure it and play it. I wondered where he had gone ,too good to fade away. Great to hear the man still loves his music, and performing.I found this string through much trawling,a sad case really!
Best wishes and memories to all fans and the man himself

Hello Harvey,

Thanks for replying and it is good to discover you are still playing music and doing some gigs presumably. I have lived in the Netherlands for almost fourteen years now but I am back to England in a day or so to see Jonathan Kelly once more in Doncaster, at another sold-out venue. I am really looking forward to it. This will be his second performance in one year or putting it another way his second in thirty years! There is even talk of a new album and rumour has it that Gary Moore may feature on it!
Did you ever play with JK by the way? I found that photo of you in '72 playing at the Empire theatre with Focus the other day. Maybe I should check you out too some time. As for Focus, well Thijs van Leer still has the band together but without Jan Akkerman. He is still playing lots of jazz venues and is still very popular in his own right.
I shall have to check you out too Harvey! As far as I recall you wrote some interesting lyrics and had a very distinctive vocal style from what I can recall. And you did score very highly in my little red book.

Best Wishes,

Frank Weston.

From: GUEST,The Return Of The King.

Last monday evening on the 5th September 2005, I had the pleasure of seeing Jonathan Kelly live in concert once more at the Sal in Doncaster and I was not disappointed. On the contrary his performance was magnificent and he played for over two hours before his return to the stage was demanded by a small but vociferous audience.
Two encores and three quarters of an hour later he finally left the stage for the last time after delivering one of the best live perfomances I can ever recall. He played all the old favourites and new songs too in a repetoire that covers the whole spectrum of popular music from pure op to folk from blues to soul and often too some rock and roll. His stage presence is immense and he seems to be going from strengh to strength right now with talk of a series of gigs and a new album forthcoming.
Perhaps, at long last, the living legend that Jonathan Kelly is, might   become the household name that his music so richly deserves.
