I thought the video taext explained who was who and what was what? The Eskimos were a group of singers / songwriters protesting about US nuclear subs being based just upriver from Glasgow in 1960+. The show commemorating them had those named above in it, plus me and plenty more. Jimmy Ross was the only one of us with half a claim to be called one of the Eskimos. Most of the Eskimos are dead, but Nigel is in Birmingham, Jim is in London, and Jackie may still be with us. Josh and Hamish and Morris are sadly missed. |

The 'Glasgow Eskimos' show was the only time I ever saw him; before that I'd only come across his name as the author of the odd song (Travelling Rhythm, mainly) but have since learned that he was active behind the scenes collecting and also seems to be doing more gigs again (having retired from his day job, maybe?). Also, I've heard he's married to harpist Alison Kinnaird. |

Do you know who the people are on the cover? I think I recognise Hamish Imlach, Josh Macrae, Matt McGinn, Joe Gordon and Gordeanna MacCulloch(?). Roger,you can find out about the Broomhill Bums in HI's autobiography but basically HI and others lived in a big house in Broomhill which has since been knocked down to make way for the high flats at the top of Broomhill Drive. In any case all questions relating to HI and/or the Glasgow Eskimos are far more likely to be answered by Ewan MacVicar whose knowledge of these matters is encyclopaedic. Ian M. |

Don't know who the woman was, but not I think Gordeanna. And as far as I know Matt McGinn was never on a Faslane demo. He's not on that cover. The names I give above all are, I'm fairly sure. I may not be the Ewan McVicar, but I'm the only one I know. Susanne, the listing suggests you have a Nat Joseph release of the Folkways album. Never knew there was one! Nat would not have bothered with a booklet, of course. |

In response to Suzanne; Geordie, as Ewan said, is living in Dunblane now (recently in fine health), married to Alison McMorland and they recently released a CD, with Alison's daughter, Kirsty Potts, (also a fine singer) on the Living Tradition label which was called "Rowan in the Rock". And no, I'm not his agent! And if anyone can tell me more on the re-release of "Ding-Dong Dollar" it would fair make me chuffed |

I actually saw the show twice because I got friendly with one of the stewards and he smuggled me into the second show (I paid for the first one, of course). I got the distinct impression it was a very emotional occasion for a lot of the grey-haired people sitting around me in their Sunday best, adorned with discreet little CND badges ... Let me assure you that Matt McGinn was never involved until much later neither was Jimmy Ross. The picture was taken aboard the ferry going to Dunoon from Glasgow for a demo. George McIntyre was an old friend of mine who actually took me to the folk club at the Trongate in 1959 and bears the resposibility (blame) of me writing folk songs. Anybody got an address for him as I've lost touch. Gordon McCulloch who, I believe, was responsible for the Glesga Eskimo show/video? was also not involved at the beginning. We (Josh MacRae, Nigel Denver, Jack O'Connor)all used to meet in Morris Blythman's house, as Ewan McVicar quite rightly knows, and write and play and drink GlenGrant malt whisky! Archie and Rae Fisher (great singers) would be there sometimes but were never involved in polital songs. Jim Mclean |
