11 Oct 01 - 03:20 PM (#569953) Subject: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: GUEST,truckerdave Just wondering. Maybe in england it has some meaning that is not immiediately obvious to a "yank. A musical meaning, perhaps? I thought for a while it meant "bulls**t" as in a big stinky pile of cow manure but the posts by guests and members alike don't seem to be oriented in that direction. Anybody want to clue me in? |
11 Oct 01 - 03:25 PM (#569956) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: MMario you got it in one. it does and it doesn't. Depends on who is posting and where the thread creeps. Used by many to be identical to "non-music" or "off topic" - but avoided by some as they don't like the connotations.

11 Oct 01 - 03:27 PM (#569960) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: GUEST It's short for 'breeze shooting' There have been lots of past threads about it. Some funny, some dull Have you read the FAQ? (Frequently Asked Questions)? I can only apologise that the FAQ is really bloated and hard to follow - I've offered my time to put it in better order, but sometimes here, Joe Offer knows best - no argument allowed. Hope that I've answered your question anyway |

11 Oct 01 - 04:07 PM (#569998) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: wysiwyg Its use allows people who prefer to focus just on music to use a special filtered URL to access the site. I have come to think of it like this-- it is not saying that the TOPIC is BS, it says that what people are going to do is shoot the breeze about something. ~Susan |

11 Oct 01 - 05:44 PM (#570071) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: wysiwyg The URL for filtering out BS threads is this: http://www.mudcat.org/threadsnot.cfm?Title=BS: It sounds like someone has read more into my post than I wrote into it. I meant "special" in the sense that it is designed to do that job and isn't the same URL as www.mudcat.org, and the loki and ragtime URL's. ~Susan |

From: GUEST "It sounds like someone has read more into my post than I wrote into it" No Susan, I was somewhat drunk and feeling angry. I'm very sorry. No doubt I'll start feeling really maudlin soon. Alcohol is a really bad drug. Really wish I could free myself from it.

We used to have a "regular" that hung around here
Since he was the first, the honor of the BS prefix fell upon the person of BSeed, however, it could just as easily been dubbed CS or KL (or even MT or LS if the nomulcur were bestowed in reverse order of entrance upon the MudCat stage, and the significance of their non-relevant postings.) |

12 Oct 01 - 09:32 PM (#570963) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: Joe Offer Dorrie - I thought I put it pretty straight in the FAQ: Generally, its function at Mudcat is to label fun chit-chat that doesn't have anything to do with music. Is that clear enough? -Joe Offer- |
12 Oct 01 - 09:44 PM (#570969) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: GUEST You did indeed Joe, But to be frank, The FAQ is far too long as a single thread. Hardly anyone new can be bothered to wade through the whole thing. If you'd like a suggestion - reorganising it as a seperate page with clickable categories would make it much easier to use. Happy to help if you want |
12 Oct 01 - 10:07 PM (#570981) Subject: RE: What does the 'BS' prefix mean? From: Joe Offer Yeah, but Guest, I don't know who you are, so how can you help? Take a look at the FAQ; and maybe if you open your mind a bit, you'll see that I didn't do all that bad a job. For your benefit, I've marked the end of the "permanent" part of the FAQ - I think it's at the end of the ninth message. What's below that is questions and answers, and information that is in development. The entire FAQ is indexed with clickable links in the first message, and all a person has to do is click on the desired subject. Of course, if a person doesn't take the time to read the table of contents, they will have a hard time finding what they're looking for. Books are far easier to read than Web pages. I considered making the FAQ an index that linked to explanatory pages, but I decided an indexed single thread was easier and faster to load and navigate. If a topic isn't indexed, people can find the information with CTRL-F. Yes, the FAQ is due for a revision. I'm not planning to spend much time on it until the New Mudcat comes out. -Joe Offer- |
