12 Oct 01 - 04:38 PM (#570765) Subject: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Pseudolus OK folks, looks like the Secret Santa thing is a go!! First a brief description of what is going on. I will collect all of the names and addresses of the folks that would like to participate. I will give them to my wife who has graciously offered to mix the names in a hat and draw them to sign each person up with a secret Santa. This way, I won't know who my SS is! She will then join Mudcat (Yay!!!) and PM everyone (email if you prefer) with the person that they are the Secret Santa for including address etc. Clinton will set up a hints thread so that we can all go out there and shamelessly ask for stuff!
So here are the rules......
PM Pseudolus with your real name, email address, and mailing address by 10/19 at the latest. If someone feels that we need more time let me know. Visit the hints thread to see what interests everyone has. It'll make shopping a lot easier!! Try to stay in and around $20 (U.S.) unless of course you have me, then go as high as you want!! LOL!!! Teasing someone in the hints thread will be encouraged, in other words logging in as "GUEST, Pseudolus' Secret Santa" would be fun and also helpful if you have questions. We should have a date that we attempt to get the gifts delivered by but since we are global, I'll leave that open to suggestion in this thread. Clinton, if I missed anything, please feel free to add!! Any Questions???? PseudoClaus |
12 Oct 01 - 05:01 PM (#570788) Subject: ME ME ME!!! From: Clinton Hammond Ummm... ya... the hints thread is not for dropping hints at who you might be shopping for... that's supposed to be a total surprise... the hints thread is a place to go to answer a few simple questions to give your SS a better idea when shopping for ya... so posting as Guest is really pointless... What are we gonna do, Frank, if yer wife want's to be part of the SS now??? LOL!!! The hints thread will be up soon... Oh ya... I'm in BTW... PM is on the way... ;-) |
12 Oct 01 - 05:10 PM (#570799) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Allan C. About those mailing addresses...some of the two-letter codes for states in the U.S. can be difficult to decipher by folks who live elsewhere. It could be useful for your Secret Santa to know what is meant by MI, MT, ME, MS, MN or whatever. A small note, separate from your mailing address could be helpful. Just a thought...

12 Oct 01 - 05:48 PM (#570824) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Clinton Hammond Oh ya... one other thing... Should you, even after reading your recipients Hints, still be stuck for ideas... the smart move is to have Pseudolus PM/email them on your behalf asking for clarification... There's also a Hobbity thing that can be done... instead of just going out and spending $20 on something that's on someones list, mathoms are a great way to go... ya know... those trinkets that everyone has around the house that they don't really like but you're certain someone else would... Crate 'em up and send 'em if ya think they'd suit yer person... Making something is also VERY cool! Those are the best prezzies, eh Baldrick? ;-) I guess that was more than one more thing eh... oh well... ,-) |

(re: guessing the secret santa) When we would do this in college, we'd do small gifts every day for a week, and then give one bigger present on the last day, and that's when we would guess.... how do you do that without a time limit? And, conversely, would it be possible to set a time limit via the internet and international mailing? Just wondering... |

15 Oct 01 - 04:50 AM (#572280) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Genie Count me in, too, folks. As my gift to whoever is to be my recipient, I'll bow to their tastes and preferences in gifts, of course. For my part, I have become involved, over the last few years in the "Alternative Gift Market." (I think they have a website at alternativegifts.org or something like that.) The idea is to give donations to people's preferred charities in lieu of the usually unneeded and often unusable material gifts that we often send each other. (How many more scarves do I need that don't go with anything in my closet, or how many calendar organizers can I use in a given year?) I mention this, not to dampen the enthusiasm of folks who like to exchange stuff--I often find that fun, too, if I really know what a person will like--, but to add another dimension to the gift exchange idea. Alternative Gift Market has some great nonprofit organizations to support for humanitarian and environmental and public health causes, etc., and it can be handled just as other gift exchanges. That is, for example, I can tell folks what my pet projects are (and vice versa) and when people make the donations, they send a card telling about the project supported. It's just one of several options, like the idea above of sending what my sister calls, I think, "fraggle gifts"--things you have received that are lovely (but not suitable for you, yourself) on to someone else.
Anyway, the Secret Santa idea sounds like a smashing idea! |

I really did want to the chance to send some good old canned possom from KY to England if I got the chance :) no really, I think it would be neat to send to someone across the pond something unique from my tiny corner of the world...I really wouldn't mind the postage. 16 Oct 01 - 04:29 AM (#573156) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Fibula Mattock Just a question about splitting the pool - perhaps that's not a bad idea - I mean, if we post something overseas, do we not have to put a return address on the customs form...? There goes the secrecy if that's so. (Also, let's clearly mark the envelope "Mudcat Secret Santa" so people aren't worried about strange envelopes turning up on their doorstep...) |
16 Oct 01 - 07:50 AM (#573236) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Liz the Squeak We could send it to another pondside catter, and ask them to forward it....? LTS |

16 Oct 01 - 08:08 AM (#573253) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Mary in Kentucky Good idea. However, I thought that by the time we sent "the gift" we could reveal our identity. Also, here in the US we have to have the zip code on packages before they will be delivered. When I put USA on my address to PseudoSanta I forgot to put the zip code. Also, for delivering packages via UPS or Fed Ex, the street address must be on there. I have a PO Box, so the post office is now getting picky about requiring that. I now put both addresses on forms, but some bureaucrat usually omits one of them! |
16 Oct 01 - 10:04 AM (#573316) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Kim C Regarding return addresses... we are going to have to do them anyway, for safety reasons. Personally I am not going to open a package with no return address on it, nor would I expect anyone else to. |
16 Oct 01 - 10:13 AM (#573328) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Fibula Mattock I'm going to use my work address for sending and receiving. It feels safer. |
17 Oct 01 - 10:47 AM (#574176) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Pseudolus OK folks, here's the scoop. If you would like to stay on your own side of the pond send a PM to KarenB (my wife!). If that is the case she will make sure that the person you are sending to will be close, well, in the same country at least. The rest will be drawn totally random. I think it might be fun to have someone outside the US so I personally will take my chances but I totally understand if someone wants to "stay local". So, my wife will be drawing names this weekend and you should know who you are shopping for by the end of the day (PseudoClaus time) on Sunday....... Frank P.S. If you know anyone who wanted to be in but hasn't PM'd yet, tell him or her to hurry!! |

17 Oct 01 - 01:58 PM (#574286) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Clinton Hammond The whole idea is that when they open it, then the find out who it's from! It doesn't have to stay secret forever... as a matter of fact, if mudcat wasn't so uptight aobut threads with pics in them, we couild start a thread after X-mas to post pics of us with out gifts... Sorta a "look what I got, what did you get" thing... doesn't someone else here have a mb??? Maybe we could do such a thread there if mudcat won't relax about pics in threads.... |

I think we might get Jeff to throw a few in a special section of the photos pages if we don't push him too hard time wise. He's been doing a helluva' job at getting things up within a few days after he gets them, so maybe he could work us in. Or we could all post to one of the remaining free accounts.....Whoever it is that's still doing it. It's a good idea and I think we can all figure something out. HEY PSEUDOCLAUS!!! What's the official count and can we get a list posted of the participants? Spaw--Being a pain in the ass |

But I'm not letting that daunt me. I've decided to make it more of a game on my end then just going out and getting something based on a list (Yes, I know filling out a list for Santa is traditional, but I'm not traditional... at least in that sense!). I've decided to search the forum for my ... erm, what's the term -- "Santee"? ;-), and read several posts by that person in the last month or so, to see if I can actually, sort of, in a way, get to know this person, and see if I can figure out what might be liked. I was only the busybody who linked the threads together, being a trainee pedant/librarian. I thought I'd left it too late too, but have been included, so you may just be lucky! There may be others who were busy this weekend who missed the closing date. |

22 Oct 01 - 07:48 PM (#577714) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Burke Was a time set for mailing? I can't seem to find it. Guidance for overseas shipping is also needed espeically as to time, but also possible restrictions. |
22 Oct 01 - 08:59 PM (#577758) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Burke Answered my own question. I guess the US Postal Service is a bit too distracted by things like diseases by mail, to post this year's Christmas mailing deadline. I went to the USPS web site and with a search on Christmas found the deadlines for 1999 & 2000. There are also rate calculators so you can see what your postage will cost from the US.

22 Oct 01 - 09:03 PM (#577762) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Blackcatter greetings all I looke around in the U.S. Postal Service site - I couldn't see any time estimations for International mail (typical) so I went to the Canadian Postal Service site and they say give an extimation of 6 to 10 days. Of course, the closer we get to the holidays the slower the service. How about if we all mail by about December 1? I guess it doesn't matter - but if you have an international Santee - just make sure to check with your local post office to see how long it will take. Does that sound ok? |
22 Oct 01 - 09:33 PM (#577783) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: Burke Blackcatter, I didn't realize you had posted 2 places. I provided the links in the other thread, but for surface mail it looks like early Nov. mailings are recommended |
22 Oct 01 - 09:55 PM (#577797) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: RangerSteve OK, I got the name and address of the person I'm supposed to send a gift to, but she hasn't posted on the hints thread. She's is serious danger of getting a copy of my out of print cassette tape. I hope she likes old-time country music. Come on, folks, you have to post your wants so the rest of us know what to get you. |
22 Oct 01 - 10:06 PM (#577805) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: GUEST,Robin Ranger Steve, Capriuni posted a great idea, and that is to search the forum for previous posts of your intended victim, ahem, gift recipient to get ideas
Ps, I like oldtime music in case you are MY Secret Santa! Robin |
23 Oct 01 - 06:53 PM (#578340) Subject: RE: Secret Santa....OK, now who's in?!?!?!?! From: SharonA Don't forget that the mail is going to take even longer this year, since it's going to be scrutinized more carefully for bio-nastiness. Also, mail may be diverted to other post offices if the one you're sending to happens to become contaminated (that's already happening in the Trenton, NJ area). So the sooner sent, the better! |
