Capo makes my guitar sound out of tune

A lot of time when I use my capo my guitar sounds off tune just slightly. Especially up on the 4th fret. Am I just capo challenged or am I doing something wrong? Its a clamp type. -Rory-

You could have an "intonation" problem--that being that the frets are just slightly off from marking the true harmonic points between nut and saddle (the pieces of hafd plastic or bone that mark either end of the strings). This can almost always be dealt with successfully and inexpensively by a good repair man.

It's equally possible that you may just move or bend the strings too much up or down when you put your capo on. You may try just lifting the capo straight up and re-seating it straight down on the strings. See if that helps.

It's not that unusual to have to adjust your tuning a bit when you are capoed up as high as you indicate.

Er, well have you checked you intonation to see if it's correct? If it's a litle off and the action is set high, using a capo will put it out of tune. For example i have one guitar tuned to open D with heavy flatwound strings that i use for slide. The intonation is correct but if i use a capo on the 4th fret i have to retune the two top strings cause the capo pulls them down and out of tune in relation to the lighter strings.

Rory, you can research a lot of stuff on the 'Cat by entering a keyword in the DT and Forum search or enter a word that might be in the title of a past thread (capo for instance) in the filter box and set the refresh for some long period.

In this case, I think you will find all you need to know on THIS THREAD.

Mine has a very solid intonation - but using a capo has been a bit of a problem - I found on here that there is a tuning done by luthiers - Buzz Feiten I think it is called - that will resolve this issue and inprove the playabilty and intonation.

1. Use a Shubb, as bob just said.

2. You will probably still have to tweak the 6th string.

Shubb capos cause less trouble this way than most. Try angling the capo slightly farther away from the fret on the bass end, and loosen it off a bit...cos if it's on too tight it will sharpen the 6th and 5th strings for sure. Note how the bridge saddle is angled away at the bass end...angle the capo away in a mirror image to that, and it helps...a thicker string needs to be stretched over a slightly longer distance, it seems, in order to be in tune with the others.

Hi Rory......I'll take that hug and send one back with this:

Another older thread that would possibly be useful (and includes numerous links within it such as Frets.Com and the Buzz Feinstein stuff) is located HERE.....Be sure to click the links in the thread too!

By the time you're done reading you should have a pretty good idea as to why intonation can be a problem, more than you want about compensated saddles and the like and some additional stuff on capos.

I was just listening to a cd compilation and on it was a fine blues singing lady named Rory Block. She did Joliet Bound. Absolutely excellent guitar arrangement. Just coincidence I reckon, Rory B. Regards, Chance.

Rory,
Speaking only for myself, it is an honor and privilege to have you here. I've been a fan of your music and style of performance for a long time!

And although you're probably too modest for shameless self promotion, I hope you don't mind if I make others aware of your website and music.

Best,

So - as I was saying - Justa picker - are you saying that this Rory B is the real Rory Block?

Or better yet - Rory B are you really Rory Block?

No..not the real one....not even close...sigh. I am merely an adoring fan. All of this past year I went in search of women that play the blues...especially the old delta type. I found many talented artists but I have to say Rory is a big favorite of mine and not just because we sing in the same key either! There is so much music out there WOW....the more I learn the more I see that I need and want to learn. So many of the old Bluemen and Women have passed on, I feel determined to keep their wonderful music alive (my kids love the blues too), artists like Rory have picked up the torch and I hope it will get passed on and on and on. Apologies for my mistakely taking it at face value. You have good taste in choosing this namesake for your handle here.

Nevertheless the real Rory, is excellent and one of my long time favorite blues artists. Her website is definitely worthy of inclusion on the forum. Apparently she spent a lot of time with Stefan Grossman when they were both young and through that association got to meet and know a number of the old fingerpicking legends, back in the 60s, which in some ways must have contributed to her blues influences.

Yes, rory Block is excellent. Is she related to Alan Block? But to get back to capos.

I got tired of spending a hundred bucks a year replacing capoes which is the cost of four Shubbs in Canada, and I am terrible about leaving the damn things I-know-not-where. So I went back to elastic capos, the double strap ones.

Not only are they just as easy to handle as a Shubb, they have this advantage over any mechanical clamped ones: a lot of out of tune-ness caused by capo action is from string friction under the capo--largely due to strings being pushed sideways as the capo is put on. Withthis kind of capo, you just strap it on, then pull the capo bar up a fraction of an inch so the strings go back to where they want to be, and youre pretty much in tune.

Also, there's a Nashville trick you can do with them--if an arrangement calls for modulating up a half-tone or even a full-tone as you go into the next verse, you can do this on the fly with an elastic capo, just pull it up to the next fret by lifting the bar and pushing on the strap under the neck. Takes less than a second, easy to do on a turnaround.

Willie O - What is the type of capo you speak of? Brand name maybe? Or are these the old ones that have notches under the neck that you can set the tightness factor with? I bought one of those things that makes the guitar look like a lute when it is on - Damn near don't have the strength in my hand to open and close the silly thing!

JP - I'm glad you put Ms. Block's website in. She is going to be near here in May of next year. I had never heard of her before but am going to do my best to make the show!

Alan Block is/was Rory Block's (nor Rory B's) father. His leather shop in the village (NYC) was a hangout for musicians of the day. BTW, I have heard Rory B sing. As much as like Rory Block, she can't hold a candle to our Rory B.

Those of you who don't hit the live rooms on paltalk are missing some great talent.

If you tune it with the capo on the first fret, and it's still in tune when you move it up a few frets, that would suggest that the problem is that the nut is holding the strings a bit high, snd if you (carefully) file the notches down a litle bit, that should sort te problem. <)>

I find keysers are the best for keeping things in tune and enabling me to move around rapidly in the middle of sets of tunes (say if there are too many guitarists playing in base position, and I feel like playing up the neck where it's not so crowded, but I don't want to play lots of barre chords).

I like to put my Cipro on the second, fourth and fifth frets, respectively. Wait- maybe I'm in the wrong thread. (Although I have never noticed that capos are a very effective agent against infectious diseases).

Many guitars are not perfectly constructed or set up. It's a constant sort of battle. Using a capo affects my guitars tunings as well, but I find it a minor problem when compared to the convenience of using a capo.

A new set of strings doesn't help matters much. Thanks, BlueJay

Not so, 53. If a capo puts your guitar out of tune, that's an indication of a problem with the guitar - height of nut, intonation etc. Using the capo might make it more obvious, but even using your fingers instead doesn't remove the problem.
