pumpkin carols

'tis that time of year again when the followers of the Great Pumpkin rekindle the Halloween spirit with the sounds of Pumpkin Carols:

enjoy....

PEANUTS PUMPKIN CAROLS

GREAT PUMPKIN IS COMING TO TOWN

Oh, you better not shriek, you better not groan,
you better not howl, you better not moan,
Great Pumpkin is coming to town,.

He's going to find out, from folks that he meets
who deserves tricks and who deserves treats,
Great Pumkin is Coming to town!

He'll search in every pumpkin patch,
Haunted houses far and near,
To see if you've been spreading gloom
or bringing lots of cheer,

So, you better not shriek, you better not groan,
you better not howl, you better not moan,
Great Pumpkin is coming to town!

SHIVERY YELLS

We're on sidewalks, we're on porches,
dressed in costumes to scare.
Throught the city we're ringing the doorbells.
Trick or treating, candy eating,
Gooey stuff in our hair,
But the most fun is shrieking out loud:
Shivery yells, shivery yells,
That's the Halloween nitty-gritty.
Moan and groan, leave us alone;
Halloween's just one night a year.

THE TWELVE DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

On the twelfth day of halloween my true love gave to me:
Twelve bats a flying, Eleven maks a-leering, ten ghouls a-groaning
nine ghosts a-booing, eight monsters shrieking, seven pumpkins glowing, six goblins gobbbling
five scarey spooks, four skeletons, three black cats, two trick-or-treaters, and an owl in a dead tree.

PUMPKIN WONDERLAND

Screech owls hoot, are you list'nin?
Beneath the moon, all is glist'nin'
A real scarey sight, we're happy tonight,
Waitin' in a pumpkin wonderland!

In the patch, we're waiting for the Great Pumpkin,
We've been waiting for this night all year,
For we've tried to be nice to everybody
And to grow a pumpkin patch that is sincere!

Later on, while we're eating
What we got, Trick-or-treating
We'll share all our sacks, of Halloween snacks
Waiting in a pumpkin wonderland.

UP IN THE PUMPKIN PATCH

Up in the pumpkin patch Witches pause.
Out jumps the Great One, Hear the applause?!
Down through the rows with goodies and toys
All for this followers' halloween joys!
Haunt! Haunt! Haunt! Who wouldn't want...
Haunt! Haunt! Haunt! Who wouldn't want...
To be in the pumpkin patch?
Cheer! Cheer! Cheer!
Waiting for the Great One, and being sincere!

THE HALLOWEEN SONG

Chester's roaming in an open patch;
Jack is stepping on his toes;
We're all waiting for Great Pumpkin to come,
And we're dressed up in goblin clothes.
Everybody knows the goodies that Great pumpkin brings
Help to make our "spirits" bright.
Pumpkin followers with flashlights aglow
Will keep their watch all through the night.
They know Great Pumpkin's coming back.
He'll bring a lot of toys and goodies in his sack.
And all the kids will gather in a batch
When the Great Pumpkin rises out of the patch!
And so I'm offering this wise advice-
"You're gonna grin from ear to ear
On Halloween night when the Great One returns
If your patch is sincere!"

I'M DREAMING OF THE GREAT PUMPKIN

I'm dreaming of the Great Pumpkin
Just like I do this time each year.
When he brings nice toys to good girls and boys,
Who wait for him to appear.

I'm dreaming of the Great Pumpkin
With every Pumpkin card I write.
May your jack-o-lanturns burn bright
When the Great Pumpkin visits you tonight.

enjoy...

I don't have time to write it right now, but how about a parody on "Way Down Yonder in the Paw Paw Patch," called --what else but "Way Down Yonder in the Pumpkin Patch?" (The words to the original song are here in a forum thread.)

Genie Here's one to "Baby Face:"

Pumpkin Head, you've got the scariest little pumpkin head,
With nose of carrot and two eyes of red, Pumpkin Head,
My poor heart's a-beatin!--
It's time for trick-or-treatin'!
Pumpkin Head, I love to see you glowin' like the living dead!
Bring on the zombie scene!
It's time for Halloween
And your ghoulish pumpkin head!

It's getting to be that time again, and for the first time my chorus (Animaterra Women's Chorus) has been invited to sing at the Keene Pumpkin Festival. We have up to an hour (we're the closing act, after the announcement as to whether or not we've reached the world record has been made, and right about when everybody's ready to go home) and although we have a few songs planned, we have none about pumpkins per se. It seems to me I've heard a song about Pumpkin Pie (which I can't find or remember), but other than the pumpkin carols above, there's little about the old orange gourd in song.

Ideas, anyone?

Animaterra: My Bristol (UK)-based group does a song called "When the frost is on the pumpkin", written by a much-loved performer here called Fred Jordan, who passed away some years ago. It has a couple of regional English phrases which no doubt you would be able to re-write if you would like the song. Actually, it has an American connection too as Fred based his song on "When the frost is on the punkin" by the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley.

I would be most happy to send you a copy if you PM me with an address.

So I was thinking, why not a pumpkin chanty instead of a pumping chanty? (Take that pumpkin, put him in the alley, way, hey, put him in the alley....) I'll leave that one to your discretion.

Then the corridors of my mind opened a long-closed door to the mistrel song "Carve That Possum." That would be so easy to adapt to pumpkins that it'd be almost TOO easy. Let's see:

The pumpkin meat is good to eat,
Carve him to the heart;
You'll always find him good and sweet,
Carve him to the heart;
My dog did bark, aMy dog did whine,
Carve him to the heart;
To see that pumpkin on the vine,
Carve him to the heart.

Chorus:
Carve that pumpkin, carve that pumpkin, children,
Carve that pumpkin, carve him to the heart;
Oh, carve that pumpkin, carve that pumpkin, children,
Carve that pumpkin, carve him to the heart.

I went outside to bring him in,
Carve him to the heart;
That pumpkin he began to grin,
Carve him to the heart;
I carried him home and cut his hat,
Carve him to the heart;
I scooped his seeds out on the mat,
Carve him to the heart.

Chorus

Well first I carved his pumpkin eyes,
Carve him to the heart;
I kept the scraps to bake some pies,
Carve him to the heart;
And then I carved his pumpkin ear,
Carve him to the heart;
The scraps I'll brew some pumpkin beer,
Carve him to the heart.

Chorus

I carved his mouth, I carved his nose
Carve him to the heart;
I'll make a curry out of those
Carve him to the heart;
And now I've carved my pumpkin's head
Carve him to the heart;
I'll grind his bones to make my bread;
Carve him to the heart.

Chorus

I put a candle deep inside
Carve him to the heart;
And put him on the porch with pride
Carve him to the heart;
He'll give the neighbors quite a fright
Carve him to the heart;
When he's lit up on Halloween night.

Chorus, maybe a couple of times

Happy early Halloween,
Claire

I found lyrics to a song called "Pumpkin Pie" by an "Internet-based band" called Lemon Demon -- could that be it? It has a catchy tune.

PUMKPKIN PIE

Neil Cicierega (I think; no credit on any lyrics I found online)

There lived a merchant in the days of old
who is remembered for the things he sold.
No silly trinkets silver, bronze or gold.
So I'm told, so I'm told.

He made a most delicious pumpkin pie,
which he presented to the passersby.
Before the sun set he'd be all but dry.
Folks would buy the whole supply.

He lived alone (he lived alone)
and every night he sat upon a throne of pumpkin pie.
I do not know his name (he'd never say his name).
He never wanted all the fame that came with pumpkin pie.

Before you knew it he was in full swing.
His pumpkin pies became the next big thing.
Soon he was called upon to feed the King.
And they'd sing, feed the King

The pie of pumpkin filled the King with glee.
He offered a castle for the recipe, but...
the merchant wouldn't even give it up for three.
No not he, no not he.

He lived alone (he lived alone)
and every night he sat upon a throne of pumpkin pie.
I do not know his name (he'd never say his name).
He never wanted all the fame that came with pumpkin pie.

The King was angry and he came unwound.
He called his men, and soon the merchant found
himself in a torture chamber underground.
Tied and bound, he sighed and frowned.

And so they tortured him for night and day.
They made him scream so much his hair turned gray, but--
as for the recipe, he would not say.
They could not flay his pride away.

He lived alone (he lived alone)
and every night he sat upon a throne of pumpkin pie.
I do not know his name (he'd never say his name).
He never wanted all the pain that came with pumpkin pie.

These are cool, especially yours, ClaireBear! I'm going to have some fun with them!
I still think I've heard an old New England song about Pumpkin Pie, as well. Guess I'll head over to my Helen Hartness Flanders and see what I can find!

Thanks, everyone.

The woblin goblin lyrics
The woblin goblin with the broken broom could never fly to high, as soon as he would takeoff, another piece would breakoff, and soon he'd be a'danglin in the sky.

Each evening as he would leave the ground his radio would say, control tower goblin, your your broomstick is a'woblin, you better make a landing right away.

It soon got so he could only ride, when whiches took him piggy back, but then one day he used his brain and bought himself an aero-plane!

So if you look for him on halloween, you'll see him zip and zoom. no harm can befall him, no longer can they call him, the woblin goblin with the broken broom.
