REJOICE AND BE MERRY.
traditional.

Rejoice and be merry in songs and mirth,
Oh praise our Redeemer all mortals on earth;
For this is the birthday of Jesus our King,
Who brought us salvation, His praises we'll sing.

A heavenly vision appeared in the sky,
Vast numbers of angels the sheperds did spy,
Proclaiming the birthday of Jesus our King,
Who brought us salvation, His praises we'll sing.

Likewise a bright star in the sky did appear,
Which led the wise men from the east to draw near.
They found the Messiah, sweet Jesus our King,
Who brought us salvation, His praises we'll sing.

And when they were come, they their treasures unfold,
And unto him offered myrrh, incense and gold.
So blessed be forever be Jesus our King,
Who brought us salvation, His praises we'll sing.

A Dorset "Gallery" carol.

The tune I have got is from the Hardy family manuscripts that are in the Dorchester county archives.

This carol is in The Oxford Book of Carols (1928, no. 25) as "A Gallery Carol." The words and music are almost the same as the ones posted above and linked to. The note says, "The words and tune, from an old church-gallery book, discovered in Dorset, like No. 20 ["Yeoman's Carol"], by the Rev. L.J.T. Darwall" (p. 53). Also in The New Oxford Book of Carols (1992, no. 136) as "Rejoice And Be Merry", which says, "The tune is closely related to those of 132 ["Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day"] and 166 [Welsh carol "Wel, dyma'r borau gorau i gyd"]" (p. 477). There are several arrangements for choirs. Maddy Prior with The Carnival Band sings this in her A Tapestry of Carols album (Saydisc CSDL 366).

the link from ed is copyrighted - but wildlone has sent me the music from his source - so I will do it up from there. (tho' it seems criminal to me that one can copyright a tune when all the "arrangement" is consists of transposing the key.)

MMario, I agree with you on the copyright issue (and, to make it completely about me ;-P), especially when it's in a key that's out of my register!!! ;-)

Just a comment:

I put this song into my NWC, and there seems to be a musical phrase missing -- to my ear, the music seems to skip over the entire line "Who brought us salvation"

Do others have this problem, or is it just my ears?

capri - I have an NWC made from the Hardy Manuscript version of the music and that phrase is in there.

(NWC file sent to Joe)
