Bob Dylan the unknown

I got such a chuckle when I heard on the news this morning about Bob Dylan's difficulty getting backstage in Portland, Oregon. It seems that the security company had three women in their 30's working the stage, and they were instructed NOT to let ANYONE backstage without a pass. So here comes Dylan, and he doesn't have a pass. The women won't let him through. (Can you imagine Dylan, "Do you KNOW who I am?")

He was so disgruntled, he wanted the women fired! The security company just put them on another job. But can you imagine? They ought to have been given pictures, I guess. It really puncutates the generation gap.

Margo, still chuckling

Har! Har! Christ, I wish I could've been there to see the look on his face! If this had happened in '65 or '66 they would've had to have been from the planet Neptune to have made such a mistake. Time has a way of leveling all things.

It'd make a great song. Young Bob talking to old Bob and telling him not to get uptight about stuff like that.

He's even got some lines he could reuse:

Well, anybody can be just like me, obviously
But then, now again, not too many can be like you, fortunately..."

I think if I was Bob Dylan I'd feel quite pleased to have something like that happen to me. Well, maybe not wholly, pleased, but a little bit happy.

Was it his show? Was he actually supposed to me backstage? Or was he just visiting as his Bobness? Can't blame the ladies for doing their jobs! He should have had a pass.

Everybody needs a pass
Everybody needs a pass
We'll kick you out on your ass
Cause, Everybody needs a pass

Reminds me of a story...

Back in 1975, Jack Elliott got me a backstage pass for Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

During the show, I'm one of about 10 or 12 people watching from the passageway between the backstage area and the arena when a Maple Leaf Gardens security guy comes around and starts checking peoples' passes. He shines his light on my chest, sees the pass and doesn't say a word.

He moves to the woman behind me, shines the light on her chest and there's no pass. He then shines the light in her face and tells her that the area is restricted and that she has to go back to her seat.

She says to him, "I'm supposed to be here."

He's orders her out again and she repeats, "I'm supposed to be here."

At that point, the Rolling Thunder security guys see what's happening and go tell the Gardens guy to take a hike.

The woman standing behind me was Joan Baez.

Sounds like he takes himself a little too seriously -- like some of his fans.

Just to set the record straight according to the Roseburg Oregon News Review Newspaper October 15 2001 this incident happened in Medford Oregon at the Jackson County Exposition Center October 9 2001 it was on his last stop in Oregon and he was promoting his album (Love And Theft)and as the story goes so when A wild haired man tried to walk by the security guard and go backstage without a security pass he was stopped and if you know anything about Bob Dylan a scene developed.A quote from the News Review if it had been George Strait there wouldn't have been a problem.Louie Roy

Hey Mooh.....Country dude.....Click for Fan site

Thanks for the stories guys......Also in the wake of the NYC attacks, a lot of places have gone security crazy for good reason. But a lot of the newly hired security people may not be fans of a particular thing so it keeps it interesting I'm sure for the "stars." A few weeks ago, Rusty Wallace, a longtime and very recognizable NASCAR driver, fully dressed in firesuit and all, couldn't get into his garage stall at a track where he's won 7 times.......forgot his pass.

I have a feeling there are a lot of stories like this floating around now.

Spaw ~ Oh yeah, I might have heard this guy before. I sure am outa the country music loop nowadays. Once upon a time I had to play the stuff regularly, now I hardly know the stuff. Funny, that.

Security grief kinda sucks, but having worked in public buildings most of my life (even now that I make most of my income in music), I have always wished that buildings were tighter, times more regulated, and laws upheld. Too often intruders are not prosecuted, priveleges not revoked, or vandals not punished. It's almost impossible to get staff to lock the place up or turn out the lights. Every level of public access is threatened by terrorism and other crimes because we live in a very open society. That's the price we pay I guess.

I remember when churches were left unlocked...now we lock our garbage dumpsters.

Peace, Mooh.

"Every level of public access is threatened by terrorism and other crimes because we live in a very open society" -that's an odd definition of open, everything closed down.

So if Bob had been a clean-cut short-haired gent he'd have had no problem getting into high security places? Someone looking like, say, Timothy McVeigh. Or Lee Harvey Oswald.

Mousethief - Hey, Alex, I'm beginning to think you're obsessed with Bob Dylan! You appear on all his threads. The question is, do you have a pass to be here? :-)

McG of H ~ Odd definition of open indeed, but not mine. I like freedom of access to buildings and events, but there are limits to everything. You think Bob's appearance had anything to do his ability to get in? God help me, if that's the case, I couldn't get out my front door! But you're likely right. Oh well. Mooh.

Well, I rapped upon a house With the U.S. flag upon display I said, "Could you help me out I got some friends down the way" The man says, "Get out of here I'll tear you limb from limb" I said, "You know they refused Jesus, too" He said, "You're not Him

"You know they refused Jesus, too" He said, "You're not Him" When I was a young rebel, wearing leather gear and looking for "mods" to kill, which is what we used to do in the 60s in U.K. I had this jacket with the words "Dylan is God" written on the back. Still like the guys music. First song I sang with the morris was Boots of Spanish Leather. Now I start one particular song:- Where have you been, my blue eyed son? Where have you been, my darling young one? In the woods, dear muvva, The woods dear muvva. Oh, muvva be quick, I wanna be sick And lay me down to die. .......then carry on rest of "Henry, My Son" Makes me smile. Blank looks from young 'uns.
