15 Oct 01 - 01:41 PM (#572578) Subject: Bob Dylan the unknown From: Margo I got such a chuckle when I heard on the news this morning about Bob Dylan's difficulty getting backstage in Portland, Oregon. It seems that the security company had three women in their 30's working the stage, and they were instructed NOT to let ANYONE backstage without a pass. So here comes Dylan, and he doesn't have a pass. The women won't let him through. (Can you imagine Dylan, "Do you KNOW who I am?") He was so disgruntled, he wanted the women fired! The security company just put them on another job. But can you imagine? They ought to have been given pictures, I guess. It really puncutates the generation gap. Margo, still chuckling |

Back in 1975, Jack Elliott got me a backstage pass for Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. During the show, I'm one of about 10 or 12 people watching from the passageway between the backstage area and the arena when a Maple Leaf Gardens security guy comes around and starts checking peoples' passes. He shines his light on my chest, sees the pass and doesn't say a word. He moves to the woman behind me, shines the light on her chest and there's no pass. He then shines the light in her face and tells her that the area is restricted and that she has to go back to her seat. She says to him, "I'm supposed to be here." He's orders her out again and she repeats, "I'm supposed to be here." At that point, the Rolling Thunder security guys see what's happening and go tell the Gardens guy to take a hike. But a lot of the newly hired security people may not be fans of a particular thing so it keeps it interesting I'm sure for the "stars." A few weeks ago, Rusty Wallace, a longtime and very recognizable NASCAR driver, fully dressed in firesuit and all, couldn't get into his garage stall at a track where he's won 7 times.......forgot his pass. I have a feeling there are a lot of stories like this floating around now. Spaw |

Once upon a time I had to play the stuff regularly, now I hardly know the stuff. Funny, that. Security grief kinda sucks, but having worked in public buildings most of my life (even now that I make most of my income in music), I have always wished that buildings were tighter, times more regulated, and laws upheld. Too often intruders are not prosecuted, priveleges not revoked, or vandals not punished. It's almost impossible to get staff to lock the place up or turn out the lights. Every level of public access is threatened by terrorism and other crimes because we live in a very open society. That's the price we pay I guess. I remember when churches were left unlocked...now we lock our garbage dumpsters. Peace, Mooh. |
