17 Oct 01 - 06:52 AM (#574063) Subject: Captain Cook Festival From: Alio I'm off to Whitby on October 26th for the Captain Cook Festival with the Shellbacks. Never been to this one before. Does anyone know what it's like? Are there any other Mudcatters going? Where are the best places to go? |
17 Oct 01 - 08:16 AM (#574093) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: GUEST,Greycap Tell me more, please....I'll likely to attend |
17 Oct 01 - 08:57 AM (#574106) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Dave Wynn The best part of Whitby is discovering the place yourself. The old side (east) is a delightful place to wander with lots of pubs and shops (Black Horse is one of the best). The other side has typical small seaside attractions and some nice pubs including the Elsinore , The Angel , Plough and what used to be the Cutty Sark but is now (alas) renamed the Tap and Spile. Best Fish and Chips in the UK can be had from the Magpie Cafe (IMHO). Hope you enjoy it...we will be there Nov 2nd and 3rd for the Goth Festival (Dracula is linked to Whitby). Spot |

17 Oct 01 - 10:39 AM (#574167) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Linda Kelly Not just your opinion Spot, I think Rick Stein also said it. If you can be bothered to queue go to the Magpie Cafe it is amazing. I have been going to the Shanty Weekend for several years. There will be several Mudcatters hold up in a secret location on the weekend of 27th October and taking part in the singarounds, usually in the Pier, Endeavour and Plough pubs. I've always enjoyed it immensely, and usually Michael from Swansea is around with Baggyrinkle. On Sunday the normal folk club in the Tap & Spile is most enjoyable and hopefully Mandomad and Jingle will be there. Aardvark and his missus will definitely be around and let's face it Tyke is always there! Just a few Mudcat names you are likely to come across together with several others including myself. |

27 Oct 01 - 06:02 PM (#581065) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Mrs.Duck Just returned from a great day out in Whitby. Sang along with the Shellbacks at the bandstand (perhaps they'll let me join if I ask nicely) and had a good singaround in the Endeavour later. Even had a quick paddle. Didn't see Chanteyranger unfortunately but met plenty of other 'catters. Only regret we couldn't find any accomodation so had to leave around 9pm and drive home - sober!! |
29 Oct 01 - 07:14 AM (#581815) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Linda Kelly Well, I am' in recovery mode - a wonderful weekend meeting Mudcatters from far and near. Wonderful singing from the Shellbacks and a super set from Chantyranger. Peter, you are welcome to come to Hull, plenty places for you to stay! Yesterday afternoon and the eveing folk club in Tap & Spile were magical -Noreen singing like an angel as ever, Mags talking dirty in Hawaiian, and Treaties1 doing a very sexy version of Juliana- happy memories. Also enjoyed Michael from Swansea singing 'Amongst the leave so green-o'. Come back next year y'all! |
29 Oct 01 - 07:32 AM (#581820) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Matthew Edwards A magical weekend in Whitby - lovely to meet so many 'Catters again. Some wonderful moments - eating oysters to the sound of the Shellbacks singing. Suffering from synesthesia this morning - the smell of kippers is lingering in my ears! Michael from Swansea, thanks for the Manchester Rambler , and as for Treaties1 what can I say about Juliana? Brilliant! As always a delight to hear Noreen and Ickle singing together - such heavenly harmonies! Nice to meet Les and Mags. Count me in for next year. |
29 Oct 01 - 12:48 PM (#582020) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Ned Ludd Had a great time at Whitby Shellbacks were on form. Singing in the bandstand we collected for the lifeboats, so they gave us a discount to go out on one. I'm a real shantyman ,now I've sung on the Whitby lifeboat! Admiral Ludd. |
29 Oct 01 - 06:51 PM (#582274) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Tyke Help we havn't seen or hear anything from Brian Barker since he was seen holding hands with The Lady Mayoress who was P***ed in the Endevour on Friday Night. We Know they left the Endevour together at the end of the evening (the bar was still open at this point!). Aaardvark and myself speculated that Denies (the Mayoress) may have chained him to her bed with the Maroral Chain of Office! When she appeared in the Endevour on Sunday Afternoon we confronted her. Deneis says that she has not seen him since! Should we belive her? It is the Goth weekend next week in Whitby! Ps Did I have a good time? I can't remmember things are still a bit hazy! |
29 Oct 01 - 08:15 PM (#582315) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Noreen Singing on the boat trip around the bay was such fun! We are true seafarers now, having sung shanties on the high seas (...and we're bound for South Australia... Really??) Shellbacks and friends singing in the bandstand to passers-by and gathering an audience all the way up the steps to the West Cliff! And The Sloop John B gets more complex every time we do it... Lovely to meet up with friends old and new. You shall be a Shellback, Mrs Duck! (A shellbacked duck??) And Chanteyranger who travelled from San Francisco to do a guest spot with the Shellbacks :0) Good to meet you Peter, you'll be welcome back anytime. Can we see some of the photos please? |
30 Oct 01 - 09:55 AM (#582593) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Michael in Swansea Thank you Ickle and Matthew - you've made me go all red. Another Wonderful Whitby Noreen's "Lowlands" in the Pavillion on Saturday night was magic and I didn't beat about the bush in telling her. And I told it in the Tap & Spile and now I'm telling the world. Another delight, which made me take notice, was Linda and Noreen's duetting - WOW!!!! not much else I can say. It was a good Juliana, enjoyed that, and of course Maggies Hawaiian dirty talk. Were Mags and Les in smut mode Sunday evening? What the 'ell, good time had by all. Roll on Easter and Lancaster Mike |

Talking to Ian wasisname, "Ole Abel Parkin", in Whitby and he thinks Lancaster is on. He's in with David Wright, the Lancaster Boss, so he should know something. If it was a definite NO - NO then I'm sure he'd have said. Mike |
31 Oct 01 - 11:14 AM (#583109) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Edain Snuffy, We're booked for Lancaster and the festival is listed in the bumph we continually get from Lancaster City Council or whatever to advertise the events going on there. Whitby was fantasic and I have to agree with Noreen, singing shanties on the deck of the old lifeboat as we 'ploughed the raging seas' was a fantastic experience! Plus, raises the amouth we did for the lifeboats was quiet an achievement in it' self :-) Although I hope we didn't all scare chanteyranger off.... Edain |
01 Nov 01 - 04:39 AM (#583692) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Alio Only just come on line since the weekend (only just got my voice back as well!). It was a great weekend, and amazing finding out who all the Mudcatters are...I only knew you by your Mudcat names before. Singing on the old lifeboat was fantastic, but so was singing on the bandstand with people able to listen to us from the cliff....oh the power!!! Thanks to all of you for making it a fantastic weekend - roll on the next one (and we're definitely staying in the Endeavour again Noreen, I can recommend it!!) If anyone does want to join the Shellbacks let me know, as I've already got a few names to pass on to Mein Fuhrer (Derek). |
01 Nov 01 - 01:49 PM (#584054) Subject: RE: Captain Cook Festival From: Peter Kasin I'm home now, jet-lagged and festival-lagged, with a suitcase full of new CDs and Frank Meadow Sutcliffe books and prints. What a great weekend in Whitby. I was in danger of losing my return ticket. Cookfest began the week before in Middlesbrough, then on to Marske and Staithes before Whitby. I was singing all that week with Richard Grainger and his group, The Stormy Weather Boys. Richard and Ian McNichol organized the fest so that it reached out into the communities. We sang in the church at Marske, in Cleveland hospital for patients and on the hospital's radio station, in a recreation hall, aboard the Endeavor at the Stockton quay, and at the Sunday night folk club at Dr. Brown's. Whitby was the perfect culmination of the fest. What a magical place. It was great finally meeting several 'Catters and connecting the people to they're names. A great bunch to meet up with, and I was only sorry there wasn't more time on my trip to talk with you more. Got to hear Noreen's rendition of Lowlands Away, which was soulful and moving. It was a pleasure getting adopted (or abducted) by the Shellbacks at Whitby, singing with them in the lifeboat and in the Pier Inn. Great meeting Ickle Dorritt and Michael in Swansea as well. So, Ickle, I didn't drink half as much as I should? Are you kidding? I drank enough water to fill an aquarium! :-) -chanteyranger |

Think Bill and Theresa are doing the same, but not sure. They came over on Saturday to help us bid farewell to the stewards at the Con. Club, as did Noreen and Alan. There was some lovely singing. Shellbacks will be in America so we will just be able to enjoy the pubs without the hiking over to the Spa! |
