I'm really excited. Discover Magazine, November 2001, page 24. It's my first ever published piece--and in a national magazine! Not planning on quitting my day job, but I could learn to like this...

Aloha,
Mark

I remember the thrill, Mark. Page 1, the Daily Journal- Record in Oakville, Ont. Still felt it years later when a really nailed a piece. Thought I'd miss it when I started flying a desk, but I really haven't.

Congrats,

david

G'day Mark,

I'll look forward to it ... It takes a bit longer for the copies of Discover to swim to this side of the Pacific.

Discover has a column called "Vital Signs", which features "medical detective stories". In a (macadamia) nutshell, mine is about a 3-year-old with delayed development who appeared autistic. One day she came into my office with every indication that she'd had a stroke, which in fact she had. It was caused by a rare metabolic condition, homocystinuria, in which a very high level of an amino acid called homocysteine makes the blood clot more easily than normal. The high homocysteine levels also damaged her brain and caused her developmental problems. A new medication has lowered the blood homocysteine levels, and, while she is still delayed because of the damage already done to her developing brain, the autistic symptoms have improved.

I've wanted to be a writer ever since high school, so this is really exciting for me!

Aloha,
Mark

Mark,

Congratulations! I still have copies of my first published articles back in the early 80's--it's a big thrill. I also keep a file of rejection slips, and have enough to paper a smallish room. Get yourself some extra copies of the magazine and use the tear sheets to send off with query letters in the future. Success breeds success, in writing as anywhere else.

M.

Well done... the awful thing about writing is that some of us go to do it for a living.

(You call this a living????!!!!)

Well done. Hope many more follow.

Sorry, Sins, I missed your post earlier. There actually is a new drug for inflammatory bowel disease that I heard about recently on a continuing-education audiotape. Of course, I can't remember the name of it now, or whether it's better for Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. I will check it out and get back to you. Crohn's and CF...that's a tough load to bear.

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks, Mark. The family had two more children before she was diagnosed. The third child, a boy, is CF positive too. Mom and Dad spend lots of time in the emergency ward and pediatrics unit. Both are great people and just take it in stride. Healthy children are a reason to celebrate.
