From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) "Songs of Zion" (recommended above) is African Methodist Episcopal; it has a mixture of hymns and spirituals that fit into their worship. It is OK for those who don't want to get into the more historical versions and should be fine for your purposes. If one of their churches is near you, you can probably borrow a copy. |

From: wysiwyg Hi TC, I am coordinating a huge project here about spirituals, still under construction... there is a thread indexing what-all we are doing, HERE. I also have some information more in line with your specific request, that is not yet posted in the project. If you'd care to drop me a line I would be glad to share it with you. ~Susan motormice@hotmail.com |

19 Oct 01 - 11:53 PM (#576092) Subject: RE: Help: Negro Spiritual Help.... From: Steve in Idaho You want Black Gospel - Jerry Rasmussen is the word on it. Rick Fielding says he is the best writer America ever produced. I just received a tape of him and the "Gospel Messengers" - WOW! They are planning on cutting a CD this winter and I certainly look forward to getting my hands on a copy! Steve |

21 Oct 01 - 08:54 PM (#577083) Subject: RE: Help: Negro Spiritual Help.... From: Jerry Rasmussen Hey NortonL: Glad you enjoyed the Messengers. It is my great honor to lead the group... being white, a folk singer and all.. Our bass, Joe Evans is 77, so he didn't learn his songs from books.. like we are more inclined to... have to. Frank Cumming is a mere 75. Both of them grew up in the south, and had ex-slave family members around when they were growing up. They know how to drive a mule and castrate pigs (and disappearing art form, of its own.) We are hoping to pull together some live recordingsand make a CD this winter, as you said. We are from southern Connecticut, but are venturing further afield now... sang in central Missouri in April. If you are on the east coast and want to know if we'll be coming to a church near you soon, drop me a line at gospelmessengers@msn.com and I'll keep in touch with you. Rick hasn't heard the gospel I've written for the Messengers.. guess I'd better send him a tape... Jerry Rasmussen |

Send it to me at gospelmessengers@msn.com, and you will receive in return one "Count 'Em" tape of the Gospel Messengers. And stop spreading this unfounded rumor about my ability as a songwriter. I just writes 'em the way I feels 'em. Like you. Oh yeah, Rick Fielding is the greatest songwriter North of the Border. Take that!!!! |
