My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through

My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows

Her husband, was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found

SOURCE: HERE

Also HERE and HERE (Nirvana version). It's a variant of In the Pine.

The version in the DT is called "In The Pines (Black Girl)". There's a slew of threads discussing it. Oddly enough, the bluegrass version of "In the Pines" makes no mention of body parts, nor of black girls, although it does mention "the longest train I've ever seen..."

What is the song structure for lead belly's version of Where did you sleep last night?

Actually this song dates back into the late 1800's. Almost every songster who did folk and minstrel has performed a verson of the song.

Bill Monroe made it a "bluegrass" standard, while Leadbelly did the "Blues" version.

It was one of the first tunes I learned as a young boy in Appalachia.
