29 Oct 01 - 03:03 PM (#582125) Subject: Archibald McDonald Air From: Stewart I have just listened to Johnny Cunningham's rendition of the Scottish air "Archibald McDonald of Keppoch" on his CD "Fair Warning". It's quite beautiful, but different from the traditional air found in The Waltz Book II and many other sources I have looked at. What is the difference? And where can I get a midi, ABC, etc of the tune Johnny Cunningham plays? S. in Seattle |

If I have the patience, I'll try and transcribe his version from the CD, and post it later. In a couple earlier threads (I just looked up) Mbo also asked for the Cunningham version (no replies) and later posted the standard version. I should PM him about that if he doesn't respond to this thead. S. in Seattle |

OK, I transcribed Johnny Cunningham's version of Archibald McDonald onto NWC and made a midi file CLICK HERE. Sorcha, if you could check this out and tell me if I did it right, I would appreciate it. And I can send the NWC file to anyone interested. Thanks, S. in Seattle |

30 Oct 01 - 11:43 AM (#582646) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Archibald McDonald Air From: Stewart Well, I guess I've answered my own question. The tune in question turns out not to be "Archibald McDonald", but rather is "Sad is My Fate (Is Br-nac Mo Cineamiun)." Both are on Cunningham's CD "Fair Warning." My friend sent me a cut from the CD he said was AMcD, but turned out to be the other one. They are both very nice slow airs. I think I like "Sad is My Fate" better, and now I have a good transcription of it. I'll have to go out and buy the CD since Cunningham is one of my favorite fiddle players. BTW, he will be in Seattle at the Tractor Tavern (Ballard) on Nov. 13. Cheers, S. in Seattle |

30 Oct 01 - 01:21 PM (#582685) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Archibald McDonald Air From: Stewart Sorcha, thanks for the link - somehow I didn't find that myself. I rechecked Cunningham's version (which checks ok with my transcription) and there are some slight differences (in accidentals). Measure 4 - 4th note is C natural, not sharp; measure 17 - 4th note is C sharp, not natural; measure 18 - 4th note is B flat, not natural. It is in D Dorian with some modulation in the beginning of the B part, then going back to D dorian. I think Johnny's version sounds a bit more mournfull. Anyway, it's been an interesting diversion for me, now I have to learn to play it on my fiddle. I've posted my transcription on my music web page HERE. Thanks for your help and interest.
