Why not tell us about your favorite place to chow down, at home or on the road. What do they serve? What kind of place is it? I'll kick it off with mention of a place called Lamberts' in Sikeston, Missouri, that I discovered entirely by accident back in '84. It's an old-fashioned country cafe with lots of photos of mules on the walls. The menu is down-home southern, and they are known for having "throwed bread," i.e. they walk through the dining area with fresh-baked bread and throw it to you. They also stop by your table with pots of beans and other delectables and insist you try some (it's on them). The beverages are served in Mason jars, of course. |

It's amazing how good those waiters get at their delivery--from halfway across the room that roll comes right at your head! Hard to pick just one favorite, but I have to put the word in for Gates Barbecue in Kansas City, Missouri. Delicious ribs, the world's best baked beans, and delightfully peppery sauce, which I use for dipping french fries in--the meats are quite fine without it. |

Along with the 'floor show' by the staff. "How much is the cheesecake?" "Same as the Gateaux!" "Would you like kidney with that? My sister had to have a kidney out last week!" "Lunch? Lunch? You want lunch? I've not had my breakfast yet!" Unfortunately it has been renamed and the staff have been trained to act sensibly. Mom & Pop home cookin' buffet. If you come to Nashville, check out Monterrey Mexican restaurant. Little tiny place, awesome food, cheap. Ole! |

Here are some on my list: The Yankee Doodle - New Haven - greasy little burgers with a slab of oleo - not butter oleo. Vanilla cokes - squirt of syrup, squirt of vanilla, seltzer - stirred not shaken. Louie's Lunch - Invented the burger here. Don't ask for ketchup. The White Hut - Springfield, MA - heaps of grilled onions on everything. Ted's World Famous - Meriden, CT - Steamed Cheeseburgers. You simply cannot get more cholesterol than this is 6 ounces of food. The Miss Florence Diner - Florence, MA - Everything from Trout Almondine to Rapaho (Inidian Pudding). dig in. |

Their menu is three items long, but I've only ever eaten one thing there: they make the BEST Pad Thai in the world, and they make lots of it. For 3 or 4 bucks, you get a heaping plate of greasy noodles absolutely slathered in peanut sauce. I doubt I'd ever move back to the land of the great grey sky after living in California for three years, but damn, I still miss that Pad Thai. -MudWeasel |

My current favorite, since I just moved here, is the Blue Corn Cafe and Brewery in Albuquerque, NM. Good pub menu, New Mexico style...EVERYTHING (solid) comes with chili, and that means peppers here, now that mushy stuff with smashed beans in it. |

Plates of cheesey, refried spicy death larger than one's head. On the flip side, the Cosmic Cup on Oak Lawn is a great vegetarian place. I love 'em both, and the sitar music at the Cosmic Cup make it a special treat. |

It is/was the Dynasty Restaurant in Wheaton, Maryland. In times past, there was no menu - at least not during the Sunday afternoons that I was there. Waiting staff pushed cartloads of various foods among the tables. One simply watched and waited until seeing something irresistible and asked for it to be served at your table. Irresistible items were not at all difficult to find there. Everything was not only beautiful, but also delicious! The desserts were incredible in flavor and in a strange mix of ornate simplicity that was pleasing to the eye and tastebuds. I had quite a few wonderful meals there and never found the cost to outweigh the benefits. The food there is still quite good (understatement) but the wandering carts are gone. |

From: Bill D my old favorite: Connie's Mexico Cafe in Wichita, Kansas,,(original location..North of 21st street on Broadway)...enormous burritos are famous! People who move away go back and order Care Pacakges of the filling to freeze and take home to impress friends!...These burritos are about $5.95 now, but I started eating them when they were 85ยข!..(1965?)...all family owned, handmade stuff... traditional Deep fried tacos with potatos & peas in the filling..YUM! (Allan...the Dim Sum carts are still rolling at some places, though it DOES seem like you have to chase them...there is one in Bethesda that used to be in Wheaton...and one halfway to Rockville on Viers Mill Road that has Dim Sum in tables..(too small for carts)

Expensive (at least to me): Mike's American Grill in Springfield, VA. Every single thing on the menu is superb, bar none. Great jambalya, unbeatable steak and prime rib. Whatever you get, it's good. I guarantee it. The white chocolate cheesecake is unbelievable. They have a neon sign on the wall that say's "Be nice or get out." I like that. |

I used to date a guy from Dallas, back 15 years ago, and he took me there a couple of times when we went down to see his parents. Little tiny place, best queso on the planet. I ditched the guy, but dang if he didn't have good taste in food. did I mention the Omni Hut? It's in Smyrna, TN, just between Nashville and Murfreesboro. Polynesian food. Been in business over 30 years. They open at 5 for dinner and you better be in line at 4:45 or you'll be waiting all night. Kitschy decor, great vittles. For dessert you can get a volcano - a mountain of ice cream with a flaming sugar cube on top. They don't serve booze, but you don't need it. The food speaks for itself. There was a little diner in New Market, VA, where Mister and I stopped one time. They had mini-jukeboxes at every booth. Best liver and onions I ever had. And the first time I ever tasted peanut soup. (friends, you have not lived until you have eaten peanut soup. I kid you not.) When I went to London 13 years ago there was a little walk-up place I used to go to get gyros. Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!! |

When I'm in the area, I'll run over to China Town in the District for Big Wong's and Full Kee (by the way Allan C, you were having "Dim Sum" which is what a friend described to me as "Chinese Lunch". You can still get that in DC and we have one place in Richmond.) |

We sat in the Nile Room complete with a running fountain and the statue of the Pharaoh's daughter holding the baby Moses. Mister and I had soft-shell crabs - I love them, he thinks it's like eating giant bugs. With all the statues and gilded mirrors, I sorta felt like I needed white gloves and a little hat with a veil or something. Very 1950ish. And those of you that don't care for seafood, Nick's has other things on the menu. But if you're anywhere near Yorktown, ya gotta go. :-) |

In my book, the most romantic restaurant I have ever encountered (that also has some of the world's best cuisine) is Blue Pete's Seafood Restaurant near the tiny crossroads of Pungo, Virginia (just south of Virginia Beach). You can get there either by car or boat. There is optional outside dining at the water's edge or inside. Either way, one can see the lights from the waterside torches reflecting beautifully in the water at night. Even when dining outside, one would have expected to be plagued by mosquitoes. They were strangely absent (for which I was grateful). The service is every bit as wonderful as the food. If you want an out-of-the-way place to take that special someone and don't mind spending a few dollars more than usual, it is the place to go. |

It was Dutch something, anyway, and right downtown. Biscuits to die for, and they serve this Amish-made sausage. While we were on vacation last summer we had breakfast at a little place in Jamestown, VA called the Old Chickahominy House. They only serve breakfast and lunch, if I remember right. Anyway, they make flat biscuits, that are like little pockets. I had never seen or heard of anything like that before. But man o man, were they ever GOOOOOOOOOOD. I have to admit, I'm partial to Cracker Barrel. There's usually one wherever you go, at least in the Southeast. And Bob mentioned Applebees - same thing. If you're in a strange place and nothing local strikes your fancy, you can always count on Applebees. Course, the reason we found the place in Arcola was because the Cracker Barrel in Mattoon had closed. |

From: lamarca Ages ago, there used to be a couple books called "The Interstate Gourmet", which listed good, small restaurants off of various interstates in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic USA. If you were travelling, and wanted to get a good, cheap meal and HATED mickey D's, you could usually trust the books' recommendations. Alas, the author got tired or the publisher reluctant, and they stopped printing updates (necessary as more small family places get driven out of business by Subway, KFC, McD's and other corporate clone food). We have a few ritual places that we stop at when travelling - not necessarily 5-star Michelin food, but good, home-cooked meals for reasonable prices: All-American Family Restaurant in Pine Grove, PA (off I-81) - a good truck stop - look for the billboard ad Blue Colony Diner in Newtown, CT (Exit 10, I-84) - a NOMAD tradition; good diner food and Greek specialties 'cause the owners are Greek - try the "Happy Waitress" sandwich, a grilled cheese with tomato and bacon. Yummy! My Place Family Restaurant in Newtown, CT (Rt. 6 and Queen St.) - another NOMAD tradition is breakfast at My Place (yes, that's the actual name of the restaurant) - friendly staff, especially Louise, the owner, who welcomes us back every year even though we're a huge group of rowdy folkies who take over several tables and change seats. Group favorites seem to be the Daphne special (2 eggs over easy with fried tomatoes, bacon, homefries and toast) and the Eggs Benedict Flourentine (sic), which has poached eggs over spinach on an English muffin with Hollandaise sauce. Angelo's Orchid Diner in downtown New Bedford - funky old diner with good, greasy linguica (Portuguese hot sausage) and egg breakfasts Dudley's Diner, Main St., Belfast, Maine - again, a breakfast hangout As you might gather, I'm partial to diners - the real thing, not those "retro" yuppie re-creations. The more stained linoleum and 50-year old waitresses, the better. Here in the DC area, our favorites are our neighborhood places in Silver Spring - again, not fancy or excellent food, but warm, friendly and reasonable: Thai Derm - Bonifant St. in Silver Spring; not just the same old Thai menu, but lots of soups; family owned and run Vicino's Italian Restaurant - Sligo St.- traditional family Italian place, slow service, lots of garlic, budget prices El Gavilan - Flower Avenue - Takoma Park - one of the many Salvadorean/Mexican restaurants to spring up in the local Latino district; the Mexican standards are filling and good, but try some of the Salvadorean treats like pupusas (stuffed masa pancakes with pork or cheese filling, served with spicy pickled cabbage called curtido) or platanos fritos (fried plantains = starchy bananas, served with beans and sour cream as a starch side dish) Allan C., dim sum is still served on Sundays at the Good Fortune Restaurant on University Blvd. in Wheaton, around the corner from the old Dynasty. The family that runs it used to run the Tung Bor, which tried to make it in Bethesda, but failed in the intense competition for the great Yuppie Dollar. As you might guess, eating is one of my favorite activities (as is demonstrated by my svelte figure as seen in BillD's Getaway photos); I don't actually speak any foreign languages except for the names of good peasant foods in Italian, Spanish, Greek, Persian, Thai, Polish, Slovak, etc, etc, etc. |

Serrano's, several locations, lovely Mexican food, and the site of a delightful wee jam with Jed Marum Papadeaux, seafood Alligator grill, worth it for the 'popcorn crawdads' alone On the road in the USA: Cracker Barrels seem to be consistently good. On the road in Canada: Tim Horton coffee, there's coffee I like better, but Tim's is good and consistent. |

From: Bill D I almost forgot...the best meal I think I ever had was in the Grand Dining Room on the ferry (The BIG one) traveling the inland waterway from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska... Braised Salmon in Hollandaise sauce with fresh green beans...GOOD green beans... and once in Juneau, I had more salmon, cooked over alder stoked barbeque in the woods, with a sweet glaze..The quality was unbelievable!,,,but this was 1975, and there was more 'good' salmon available. |

From: GUEST,Jenny the T In Jacksonville, Florida, there's great stuff at Singleton's Seafood Shack (behind Mayport naval base, next to the ferry landing). Don't let the 'little plywood shack' motif fool you; the million-dollar fishing boat outside is theirs, and you can't get fresher fish. The Cajun Shrimp is so good, it makes your face fall right off your head soon's you take a bite. Also down in J'ville is Whitey's Fish Camp, where the food is nearly as good, and the decor is nicer. In Indianapolis, IN, Acapulco Joe's has the finest Mexican food. Joe died some years ago, but his legacy lives on (including his tradition of playing, every half-hour on the half-hour, Kate Smith's 'God Bless America' on the jukebox). In Tucson, AZ, ya gotta have a steak at Pinnacle Pete's. Don't be caught wearing a tie, or they'll snip it off, and it'll join the hundreds of others nailed up on the walls. And if only I could remember the name of the little Mexican place in West Covina, CA--burritos as big as a small dog! JtT |
