BS: How did that get there?

Saw a thread which mentioned Wishaw earlier and I remembered that I have a towel at the back of a cupboard labelled 'Property of Motherwell and Wishaw baths'. Strangest thing is that we got it from my Polish Grandma's house after she died.

Now then. She came out of Poland after WW11. Came to Manchester via various parts of Europe excluding, as far as I know, Scotland. She was married before she left Poland to a Russian Orthadox priest so it wasn't from him. My Dad spent some time in Scotland after following a different root but denies any knowledge of it. (Perhaps it was him but the Polish / Scottish Vodka / Whisky drinking contests got the better of him?) ;-)

So, how on earth did a towel from a public baths near Glasgow makes it's way here to Manchester?

And don't even sart to wonder about the plate emblazoned 'Trinidad and Tobago Health Authority'!

Anyhow, feeling a little introspective I got something I have not had for years - no not that! - a flash of inspiration.

She came from the East in the wake of a war
Remained here in peace, saw her family grow
She told her grandchildren of the things that she saw
But one or two mysteries we never will know.

Things picked up on route, like stray floating seeds
We will never see behind that closed door
Like towels and plates and baubles and beads
Where from? Lost forever, now she is no more

Music anyone;-)

Cheers

That was really a good thought Gnome. I can't help but wonder what MY children will think as they go through my stuff after I'm gone. I've had a varied and lively life and I don't really want them to know "everything". I wish I could be "a fly on the wall" right then.

Yea! Good point. I can imagine Baba having a good old giggle.

Wonder what my lot will make of the inflatable Llamma???

LOL

The china po with 'Canandian Pacific' emblazoned on the side..... Who's going to explain that one?

And the significance of the wind up pineapple.... ?

Jees, makes you want to clear stuff out REAL soon!!

I've left a message in my estate papers that says "If it looks strange, I got it from my daddy."

Yes, I can figure out where most of it came from, and for most of it I keep it because I know what significance it had for him - but boy are the grandkids gonna be puzzled!
(They're not old enough to know, now; and I may not live 'till they're 60.)

Lovely poem, Dave.....I too wonder about what people will make of some of my stuff.....but then I think, well, we knew she was strange anyway!

The can of Heinz Spotted Dick that lives on my bookshelf, I think, speaks for itself.

But what I'd like to know is where in the world did that coffee mug with the Christmasy sort of design on it come from? I've asked all of my friends and relatives who have visited me, and they all say they didn't leave it here. Darned if I can figure it out.

I have a pair of knickers like that... They sure as hell ain't mine (won't go past my knees), they aren't Phoebe's (she fits in one leg), and no-one knows who left them here..... They appeared on the side of the bath one evening....

Maybe I should check Manitas' closet for the matching bra and suspenders..... he's been getting a bit strange recently.....

And slightly off topic - but in keeping with the title - have you ever noticed the number of single shoes that you pass on the road each morning? What's that all about?

I once found a ladies silk scarf by Jaeger in my pocket after a Christams 'do'. Guess there are some things we are better not knowing;-)

On the other side of the coin, if you have lived a very simple life, go out and gather some oddities to pack away so that when the time comes that the children must sort through what you left behind they will have something about which to be puzzled. How does the old adage go, 'The best revenge is living long enough to be a problem to your kids'

I pity anyone who has to dig through my stuff when I'm gone--I'm a magpie. There are bits and pieces of poetry, songs, unpublished short stories, quilt patterns, letters, receipts, rose catalogs, old greeting cards, cartoons I've clipped out of the paper, out-of-date calendars and address books with cryptic notes--and that's just in my desk!

And we don't even want to get into what's on my computer; it's worse yet...

I now know whose knickers they are. I'm still wondering whose knickers appeared in my melodeon bag a couple of years ago.
