I am looking for the words to supper time.

I know the chorus goes like:

Come home, come home, its supper time.

And that's about all I know!

Johnny Cash does it, I think on "Songs of our Soil" I have it in the archives and will dig it out in a day or so if no one else sends it in....Tiger

Here's the version that I know.

SUPPER TIME

(C) When I was just a (F) boy in days of (C) childhood,
I (G) used to play till evening shadows (C) come.
Then (C) winding down an (F) old familiar (C) pathway,
I (G) heard my mother call at set of (C) sun:

Chorus:

Come (F) home, come (G) home,
It's supper (C) time,
The (G) shadows lengthen (C) fast.
Come (F) home, come (G) home,
It's supper (C) time,
We're (G) going home at (C) last.

One day beside her bedside I was kneeling,
And angel wings were winnowing the air.
She heard the call for supper time in heaven,
And I know she's waiting for me there.

Chorus

In visions now I see her standing yonder,
And her familiar voice I hear once more.
The banquet table's ready up in heaven,
It's supper time upon the golden shore.

Chorus

On a different note altogether, this title also brings to mind the song from the musical "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" - song was called Suppertime, sung by Snoopy. Anybody else remember that one?

In the performance I saw, Snoopy's costume was a white track suit with black shoes. Yet somehow within about thirty seconds we could all _see_ the cartoon character vividly, & the Suppertime song was particularly hysterically funny.

BTW, any web sites where I could find the lyrics to this?

My favorite version of 'SUPPERTIME' is by the great
Jimmie Davis, author of 'YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE!

SUPPERTIME
Recorded by Jimmie Davis
Words and music by Ira F. Stanphill

Many years ago in days of childhood
I used to play 'til evening shadows come
Then, winding down an old familiar pathway
I heard my mother call at set of sun.

CHORUS
Come home, come home, it's Suppertime
The shadows lenghten fast
Come home, come home, it's Suppertime
We're going home at last.

(Spoken)
Some of the fondest memories of my childhood
Were woven around suppertime
When my mother used to call
From the back steps of the old home place
Come on home now, Jimmy, supertime
Ah! Gee, but I'd love to hear that once more
But you know, for me, time has woven
A realization of a truth
That's even more thrilling
And that's when the call commeth
From the portals of Glory
To come home, for it's suppertime
When all of God's children
Shall gather 'round the table
With the Lord, Himself
At the greatest suppertime of them all.

CHORUS

ADDITIONAL VERSES NOT ON THE JIMMIE DAVIS RECORDING:

Years later by her bedside I was kneeling
And angel-wings were winnowing the air
She heard the call for suppertime in Heaven
And now I know she's waiting for me there.

CHORUS

In mem'ry I can see her standing yonder
And her familiar voice I hear once more
The banquet table's ready up in Heaven
It's suppertime upon that golden shore.

CHORUS

The following was posted on the internet:

Ira Stanphill, one of the most prolific songwriters of this century, was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Honor in the performance category in 1997. Ira served the Assemblies of God through music ministry for over 6 decades. He wrote 600 songs and over 500 were published, including such well-known numbers as "Mansion Over the Hilltop," "Supper Time," and "Room At the Cross." He also pastored several churches and traveled extensively throughout the United States and the world.

Does anyone know if a book was ever published with those 500 works of Ira Stanphill? I would like to to purchase his works. Please reply to this category if you can help.

RS was chasing the lyrics to the Charlie Brown version.

Here it is, courtesy of a Broadway Musicals site. If it is not already in the DT Links, it may be a useful bookmark.

Hey, I"ve been searching for Jimmie Davis - suppertime for a long time, looks like I've finally found some pretty good information on the song. I, now, would likek to know if anyone can send me a sound version of the song? An elderly man in my church has been trying, for a long time, to get me to play the song on my guitar, and I've never heard it. I do have a copy of it in one of our song-books, by "Ira Stamphill", and haven't gotten anyone to play it on the piano yet, but, I'm sure it would be different than the Jimmie Davis version. So, I"d sure appreciate a sound copy of the song, PLEASE!!
thanks a lot

SUPPER TIME
Written and recorded by Jimmy Davis (slow 4/4 in key of C)
Submitted by Deral L. Clour.

[C] Many years a [F] go in days of [C] childhood
I [G7] used to play till evening shadows [C] come
Then winding down an [F] old familiar [C] pathway
I [G7] heard my mother call at set of [C] sun.

(chorus)
Come [F] home, come [G7] home, it's supper [C] time
the [G7] shadows lengthen [C] fast
Come [F] home, come [G7] home, it's supper [C] time
we're [G7] going home at [C] last.

(recitation)
Some of the fondest memories of my childhood
were woven around supper time
when my mother used to call
from the back steps of the old home place
Come on home now son it's supper time.
Ah gee but I'd love to hear that once more.
But you know for me time has woven the realization
of a truth that is even more thrilling.
And that's when the call comes
from the portals of glory to come home for it's supper time.
When all of God's children shall gather round the table
with the Lord Himself At the greatest supper time of them all.

You need someone to hum or (sing softly) the chorus
While doing the recitation.
Melody played on guitar will do.
The recitation is rather long for the chorus
You might get the singer(s) or musician to tag the chorus
(repeat last line of chorus, then you won't have to hurry
the recitation)

Repeat chorus
