Skipjack - was this wot you had in mind ??

And no I am not going to sing it !!

A Ballard of the A361 – or why I hate caravans.

Tune ? Try the A25 song ! (DT)

From Daventry to Ilfracombe my course it was set,
Away from the Midlands where the Weather is wet,
In my little Rover, a roving I'd go,
Towing a big caravan, the traffic to slow.

Cho

Down the road, let us run,
Another queue of traffic on the A Three Six One.

From Byfield to Burford the road it is hard,
No room to overtake, not barely a yard,
The little streets of Lechlade are my sure delight.
There's no room for a caravan by day or by night.

Now Swindon is interesting, as you all do know,
With the quintuple roundabouts laid in a row,
It stops the through traffic from moving so free,
And it proves that town planners do take LSD.

Avebury's old with its old stone age stones,
Where the Druids divined over raw Saxon Bones,
Then Glastonbury Tor with its mystical well,
But following a caravan is the motorists' hell.

Athelney is where Alfred burnt the cake,
For he had slept when he should kept wake.
But the road is so windy, and twisted and narrow,
I was overtaken by a man a pushing a barrow.

Oh the Sea, Oh the Sea ! at Ilfracome town,
Theres a long steep hill to get up and down
And all of you motorists, who fret at delay.
I am towing her back on the next holiday..

Gareth

Garfield, my man!!!!

Used as I did, to live on (or very near, on Mendip) this sublime highway, I remember well ye curse of ye snails, 'specially when Pilton pop festival were on.

I salute your musical polemic, and thank you rising to the challenge.

A vignette. Brian told us, in these pages, about a sign at Cannards Grave, that was marked up 'Telegraf Poles'. After the complaints, it was re-scribed 'Telegrath Poles'.

Helluva road.

Skipjack - Garfield ? Garfield ? - I mean, the only thing that overweight moggy and I have in common is a love of Lasagne and Pizza.

( If God had meant us to take the A Roads,
He would never have given us the Motorway !

Nice ballard. I take it that a "ballard" is what you sing when stuck in traffic jams caused by roadworks;-)

Didn't R G Ballard write the novel Crash about the erotomaniac aspect of high speed RTAs?

A masterly piece of work, boyo, and one I am compelled to induce you to perform at StockStock nect year... but you seem to have missed out any reference to beasts of an ovine persuasion... X-rated verses for personal friends only, perchance?

OK Dai, yer asked for it !!!!

Now the Mendip Hills are full of sheep,
As along the road my convoy does creep
but this a song about the A Three Six One,
not sexual frolics having wooly backed fun.

Down the road, let us run,
Another queue of traffic on the A Three Six One
