From "The Land Where The Blues Began" the sequence from deep water to shallow, mark four being the first count on a 33' line with a lead filled pipe on its end. At 4' it's marked by a piece of white flannel, at 6' by a piece of leather, at 9' a piece of cotton, at 12' by a piece of leather split into 2 thongs, this was mark twain (two) or 2 fathoms, mark three (3 fathoms) with 3 thongs, mark four was a single strip of leather with a round hole in it, next call would be No Bottom. Calls inbetween would be quater less twain, or half twain. An example of the calls would be, from deep to shallow, as follows;

No bottom
Mark fo'
Quater less fo'
Quater less three
Half twain
Quater twain
Quater less twain
MARK TWAIN

Homer:

I used to work concert/lecture gigs with a poet-folklorist named Julian Rayford, who collected, among other things, street-vendors cries and occupational chants. I believe that I have a cassette tape of his performance of the leadsman's chant about which you required, if you're interested.

Hi-

Once there was an obscure Billy Eckstine sound-alike who

gave up pop and went into calypso/folk. His first such record was Mark Twain--a musical setting of riverboat soundings. Harry Bella-something-or other, as I recall.

As I recall you can hear the chant on the riverboat ride at Disneyland. And I'll bet it's just as authentic as Mickey Mouse's ears.

I've been singin on a steamboat on the Mississippi River for the last decade & Sam Hinton sent me a short tape of those chants 'cause he figured I could use 'em. If you want a copy let me know and I'll get it to ya. Art Thieme
