07 Nov 01 - 03:32 PM (#587691) Subject: Hard times come again? From: SharonA So my supervisor comes up to my desk at work this morning,. leans her elbows on the desk and asks me, in a low voice, if I have my resumé updated and ready to send out. She says we should know in about two weeks whether the company we work for will stay in business or close its doors. She says she doesn't know which will happen, but wanted to make sure I was ready just in case. Eek! Of course, the places to which I already have sent or would send my resumé are in bad shape, too, and laying off rather than hiring on. Yep, things are tough all over... but it seems they may be fixin' to get tough all over me. Anybody want to buy a company? Trepidatiously, Sharon |

From: Helen Hi Sharon & Clinton, Part of my business services is to help people with their Resumes/C.V.'s so if you want me to have a look at yours and help you to send out the right messages to potential employers, just PM me. (This isn't trawling for business - this is a free offer.) "I've been down so long that it looks like up to me!" Well, now I'm getting back into the "up" area after a couple of lean years, and life is getting good. It does get better - I know, I've been there. Helen |

10 Nov 01 - 11:21 PM (#590098) Subject: RE: BS: Hard times come again? From: CraigS I just hope this is a sincere warning from your supervisor, not a sneaky attempt to get you to leave of your own accord. This has happened to people I've known. It's never happened to me, but I once worked with a guy who appeared to be friendly, but spent a lot of time trying to drop me in to trouble so that he could deflect attention from his own bad habits. |

12 Nov 01 - 05:13 PM (#591087) Subject: RE: BS: Hard times come again? From: SharonA Thanks again for the kind thoughts, everyone. Craig, I do believe that this was a sincere attempt by my supervisor to be helpful: things have been slipping steadily downhill at this company for quite a while now (layoffs, forced retirements, wage freezes, several other workers leaving for other jobs, company meetings held by red-faced president and vice-president), so it looks as if there ain't much more "down" to this "downhill"! Either that or there's nowhere to go but "up"... depends on how you look at it, I suppose. Harpgirl: Yeah, I'm still thinking about Florida, although I don't know whether my physical limitations will withstand the summer climate; I hear it's pretty brutal. Also, I'm hoping that the colleague who offered help there will still have help to give, in this economy. Are you asking what I like to do for a living, or in my off-time? |
