I'm not here often or one of the more active members, but I am working on it Blackcatter. I am surprised at how quickly some of these are going. I'll have to get busy and stop by more often.

Thanks, SS, you made my day. Been feelin' poorly and haven't checked in for awhile.

Looks like Kim needs to send me a picture. Kim, I'll take back all those nasty things I said about Kentucky, always on top!

I think some of us sent packages extremely early and they arrived in about a week. I suspect it will take longer the closer to Christmas we get.

Helen, I hope you can eat sweets. I was about to start wrapping & realized you could have dietary restrictions. A weight loss diet does not count. Health restrictions only.

Hey Secret Santa -

Not to worry - I just wanted to know you're really out there. Yes, it seems that a bunch of people have already received their gifts - but that's just people being really quick. I sent my Santee her gift early because I was told by the post office that it'd 4 to 6 weeks to get it to her - from my reckoning it took less than 2 weeks!

Go figure...

Dani, I haven't forgotten about you. I've been assured it will take no time at all for a post to reach you from where I am at, so I've been being selective and langorous about my choosing. I hope you will read this and let me know if the Manual of Style is still on your list after Mr. Helpful AllanC listed where you could get well-priced used editions.

Oh, and how is the air there? Any smog or is it fresh enough for you. It's one of the things my region is known for exporting, fresh air, that is.

Hmmm...let me look in this bag full of goodies. Why! They're all marked "for Dani!"

HoHoHo!!

In any case, I've checked with the delivery department here at the North Pole and have been assured that getting this out to you next week will still be VERY early for the season....

Stay Good,

Dear Roy (Fortunato's secret Santa), How are you by now fine I hope. Ma says I've been awful good this year and if her egg money counts up right I may get a new pair of overhauls fer Christmas. Just in time since I grew a foot last year. Now if I grow another foot this year I'll be able to walk like Ma, 'stead of hopping ev'r where. I could wear both my socks at the same time. Hop Hop Hop, I get so sick of hopping.

Mr. Hunnicut, the mail man, says he'll bring your package all the way up to the cabin on account of it'll be the first one we ever got. Thanks a heap, your obedient servant, Fortunato.

PS Ma wants to know if you can eat a raindeer, I told her you surely couldn't catch 'em 'cause they kin fly.

Hi to my Secret Santa.

I never say no to sweets, no matter how big my dieting intentions are. So wrap away! Thank you, thank you!

Oh, the waiting time between posting and receiving (moan, whinge, grizzle, groan!) - and I am referring not just to having to wait for my present, but having sent my Santee's present and now having to wait, wait, wait until it gets delivered.

Poor little snail, flapping its tiny antennae over the Pacific, or maybe, Atlantic Ocean. Getting hot and sweaty flying over the Equator, then getting cold and shivery as it heads into the Northern Hemisphere.

And I haven't heard a peep out of my Santee in these threads. So I don't even know if he/she has seen my updates.

Helen

I have received my present, but I'm afraid Santa won't put anything under the tree if I open it now...but there might be cookies in it, or something that will go bad if I don't eat it soon...like chocolate.

So, what does my Santa want? Do I get into trouble if I open it now?

This is a large box - somebody in Santa's family has some pretty healthy-sized feet! It weighs a ton. Gotta be cookies, right? Help me out here - I've never been very good at this patience stuff...

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FIVE
From: Jeri

Weighs too much for a small piece of coal. Maybe a big piece of coal with fewer newspapers. Then again my SS said it was NOT coal. Maybe it's other types of rock. I like rocks, and used to always love the mineral section of the local museum when I was a kid. I'm not so crazy about rocks that were formerly cookies.

Maybe if I keep going, I can justify opening it now...

Remember all, that coal is a rather light substance, being an organic form of rock (at least the types I have in my possession). You could have a large quantity of it and it still wouldn't weigh very much.

By the way, Sarah the Flute - I'll be have to be you're not-so-secret Santa if need be. I had so much fun doing it the first time!

I'd just like to say Thankyou, Sorcha! I have sent you an email to that effect as well. I got some gorgeous things. Here's the list:-

A beautiful Lapis Lazuli necklace
A cool T-shirt
A gorgeous pot doll (with a baby too! Sweet!!)
An amazing piece of rose quartz
and A fantastic piece of Wyoming jade.

Once again, I'd like to say a MASSIVE thanks to Sorcha. Loads of love and butterflies and all the rest of it.

I know my Santa has logout problems. If you want to PM KarenB, maybe she can pass along your wishes.

Or I'll pretend not to know who you are (my parents got that treatment, too) unless you want to 'come out' and PM me. It'll mess up the people who are crossing names off lists of their possible Secret Santas, but what the heck. And don't tell me I was the only one doing that!

The box is calling..."Open me, Cassandra Jeri."

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FIVE
From: Jeri

Due to a lack of adult supervision and the bad influence of an adult juvenile delinquent (Bat Goddess), I did it. Glad I did - there are some perishables in there. "Wolf Trap" cookies - the smell of them is driving me nuts as we speak. Santa - please send more! I have room for a pallet-full, but I suppose I could find a place to put an entire truckload. (Or the recipe would be nice, if it's not secret.)

Grits: real, unbleached, stone-ground grits. I happen to love grits. (Any excuse for butter.) I've never had anything but the Quaker variety, and just MAY get around to a bowl before I tear into the cookies.

A magnet that says "Make Merry," which is already on my refrigerator. Good philosophy!

A thing. I'm not entirely sure what to call it. It has a roach clip doohicky at one end of a thickish, bendable-into-shapes, about-1,4'long wire encased in plastic. I'm envisioning all sorts of uses for this: hanging it from various places (including body parts, but not the clip end) to hold things, setting it on various surfaces, wrapping it around things like instrument heads, fastening it to something with the clip end and using the wrapping part to hold other things, etc. I've never seen a thing quite like my thing, and I love it. (Santa, did you make this, or buy it? I'm sure when other people see my thing, they'll want one too.)

My gifts were accompanied by a Batman card - yes, Santa, I DID come home from school and watch the show every day! (In my time zone, it was on after school.

What was really cool about this was my SS had little notes on the indiviually-wrapped gifts. It felt like opening presents with someone else. You know how people tell you a little about the present before you manage to rip the paper off? Santa still remains officially anonymous, and I'll respect that.

Santa, I love EVERYTHING, and I love the care you obviously took when sending it.

THANK YOU!!!

To My Secret Santa, whomever.

We're decorating for the holidays at Chez Fortunato and last night it went like this:

Fort: What color tree would you like this year, my peach?

Mrs. Fortunato: Mistletoe.

Fort: Mistletoe!!! What an answer.

Mrs. Fortunato: Jeepers, don't you like to hang a little bouquet of mistletoe, Mr. Fort?

Baby Fortunato: He's too shy, Ma.

Fort:I am not shy. But what good is mistletoe? Catch somebody under it, and it's either somebody you can kiss anyway, like your wife, or you get a slap in the chops before you can point up to it. Mistletoe! That's just poison ivy with berries!

So you can see Santa I need to work on my Holiday Spirits (Think I'll go get a quart or too!)

I'm sure your wonderful package will boost them. We'll hang your card and picture on the tree if it doesn't frighten the children

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

OK, my friend, one thing I want you to remember. In your original hints post you told me that (I'm paraphrasing here...) one nice thing would be to acquire a new friend.....consider that part done!!

You said that under the mistletoe when you catch someone, it's either someone you can kiss anyway, like your wife, or you get slapped!! The solution? Everytime you kiss your wife kiss her like it's the first time. Oh yeah, and grab her ass, it's a good reminder that she still does it for ya!! And when it's not your wife, try a hug, you seldom get slapped and hugs are ALWAYS good for the soul. Besides, according to your note it was Mrs. Fort that suggested the mistletoe. I'm not saying the quart is a bad idea, but get two, and drink it with her (after Baby fort is asleep) under said mistletoe!!! That'll give your spirits a rise!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go grab Mrs. Claus' ass!!!

Santa

I dunno, Amergin. It depends on how many cookies Jeri had and how many people the "we" in Nottingham might be. Maybe she didn't have enough to share with the class (or town?)!

Blackcatter: The purpose of a toilet paper cover is to cover toilet paper. ;^) Yes, some people are embarrassed to have a bare toilet paper roll sitting out in the open; others simply want to prevent it from gathering dust while it's waiting to be used. In either case, it's supposed to be a way to keep a roll handy in case it's needed (and, incidentally, to prevent people from rummaging through one's bathroom cabinets and pawing the towels and such while looking for the paper).

What else should be covered? Well, a bowl-brush cover is a must. And yes, some people do cover their toilets... at least, the seat and the tank-top. A few even have decorative covers for air fresheners.

So I trotted out to the mailbox at the end of the driveway and took a look. What a surprise! There was a package addressed to ME!!

I immediately began to giggle like a little kid. I had honestly forgotten about the part of this Santa/Santee thing that involved getting stuff!

The return address told me everything: NSW, Australia. It was from Alison!!

Curiosity got the best of me. I couldn't wait to open it but really wanted to share that excitement and so I phoned Alison so that I could open it with her.

How totally cool! Alison gave me a lovely field guide to Australian birds, a pictorial guide to Sydney and a CD filled with ballads as sung by a friend of hers. I can hardly wait to give it a listen!

Alison, hon, you are a dear! Thank you so much!!

I while back I found the ultimate answer to cold loos. A plumber was refitting the bathroom and being in a hurry to finish for the day he said he'd just connect the water back to the toilet so it could be used before he went. Using it a while later it seemed pleasantly warm and then after flushing noticable steam was rising from the bowl. It appears the hot rather than the cold pipe was connected ...henceforth known as the "hot flush" mechanism!!!

Well, Secret Santa, hello to you and best regards. I 'm glad for your kind words. I'm turning up the gain so you can hear the conversation here:

"Ginger Nut," said the kindly Doctor, willing to enlist the smallest suffrage in his behalf, "what do you think of this damn Fortunato?"

"I think, sir, he's a little loony," replied Ginger Nut, with a grin.

Hey Allan! Is there really such a thing as a lyre bird? I once spent an evening in the Australian bush looking and listening for such a bird. My suspicions were aroused when my guide claimed that any noise we heard could be a lyre bird as they are perfect mimics. Sounded like a snipe hunt to me. We heard a chainsaw and I was told it could only be a lyre bird. Who would be using a chainsaw so late in the day? Sounded more like a snipe hunt to me. We did however see an echidna - an Australian porcupine.

According to Lou and Peter Berryman, there's a bird called the "dupsha dove".

It goes: "dup sha dup sha dup shaddup shaddup..."

I think, Gervase old chum, your Santa means that the period of possible delivery begins then. Santa is obviously concerned with the pre-Christmas rutting season of elves. From the messages I've been receiving from MY Santa, he's a right randy old bugger himself.

And as for those bloody pipers piping and drummers drumming...Grr!
Hang on, one of the pipers has stopped.

Oh double-sh*t!

He's making for the paddock with a wicked look in his eye

Hey, McLeod! Get off of ma ewe!

You don't know how hard it is to get anything done during the elf rutting season. Why they ever decided to put Christmas right then I'll never know.

But there won't quite be 12 days of Christmas for you, Gervase. There will be a few less. But you should enjoy it nonetheless.

The harder part is going to be figuring out my identity. When you get tired of sifting the clues you can ask Karen. She might divulge my identity but then she might not.

In the meantime I have to go put some saltpeter into the elf food. If they could isolate the elf rutting hormone it would put Viagra out of business!

From: SharonA

For SINSULL (and others discussing the Lyre Bird):

THE DUPSHA DOVE
copyright 2000 Lou and Peter Berryman

Upon a main branch, above my brain stem,
There sings a Jerdane Bird. You may have heard of him.
He goes: "Jer dane jer dane jer dane jer danger danger danger danger danger danger danger danger dane"
And that's the Jerdane Bird
Who sings a single word.

Above the Jerdane Bird 'sa bird who needs to speak
Known as the Chowtwa Hawk, the chatty Chowtwa Hawk.
He warns me: "Chowtwa chowtwa chowtwa chowtwa chowt watch out watch out watch out watch out watch out watch out watch out wa"
That's the Chowtwa Hawk,
A bird who lives to talk.

Beside the Chowtwa Hawk, 'sa bird who needs to speak
Known as the Airfulbeak, the mighty Airfulbeak
Who warns me: "Airfulbeak airfulbeak airfulbeak airfulbeak airful be careful be careful be careful be careful be careful be careful be careful beak"
Ah, the Airfulbeak,
A bird who needs to speak.

But it's the Dupsha Dove who has the final say
And to the other birds proceeds to sing away.
She tells them: "Dupsha dupsha dupsha dupsha dup shaddup shaddup shaddup shaddup shaddup shaddup shaddup sha"
How I dearly love
The little Dupsha Dove!

And when the Dupsha Dove has had the final word,
She brings the Thinbrea Bird to join the Thoutbrea Bird.
They whisper: "Thinbrea thoutbrea thinbrea thoutbrea thinbrea thout breathe in breathe out breathe in breathe out breathe in breathe out brea"
How I dearly love
The little Dupsha Dove!
