I don't quite remember all the words. It went from unknown one week to top hit the next when I was a senior in high school. Vaughn Monroe was the one that first sang it, in late April of 1949. ('Pop Memories' by Joel Whitburn, 1986)

From: Benjamin Bodhra/nai

As an aside here's a parody:

THE PORTREE KID

1. A man cam' riding oot the west one wild and stormy day
He was tall, quiet and hungry, his eyes were smoky grey
He was lean across the hurdies, but his shoulders they were big
The terror o' the hielan' glens that was the Portree Kid

Chorus:

He drum ho he drum hey
The teuchter that cam' frae Skye

2. His sidekick was an orra' man, and oh but he was mean
He was ca'ad the Midnight Ploughboy, and he cam' frae Aberdeen
He had twenty seven notches on his cromack so they say
And he killed a million Indians, way up in Stornoway

3. Portree booted in the door, he sauntered tae the bar
He poured a shot o' Crabbies, he shouted Slainte Mhath (Slangevar)
While Midnight was being chatted up by a bar room girl called Pam
Who said 'Well howdy stranger, wad' ye buy's a Babycham'

4. Now over in the corner sat three men frae Auchtertool
They were playing games for money, in a snakes and ladder school
The fourth man was a southerner who'd come up from Macmerry
He'd been a river gambler on the Ballachulish Ferry

Chorus

4. Portree walked tae the table and he shouted 'Shake me in'
He shoogled on the eggcup, he gave the dice a spin
He threw seven sixes in a row and the game was nearly done
But then he landed on a snake, and finished on square one

5. The game was nearly over and Portree was doing fine
He'd landed on a ladder; he was up to forty nine
He only had but one to go and the other man was beat
But the gambler cowped the board over, and shouted 'You're a cheat'

7. Men dived behind the rubber plants, to try and save their skins
The accordionist stopped playing, his sidekick dropped the spoons
He says 'I think its funny, you've been up that ladder twice
And ye ayeways dunt the table, when I go tae throw my dice'

Chorus

8. The gambler drew his Skian Dubh (Skeandoo), as fast as lightning speed
Portree grabbed a screwtop; he cracked him o'er the heid
Then he gave him laldy, wi' a salmon off the wall
And he finished off the business wi' his lucky grousefoot's claw

9. Portree walked up tae the bar, he says 'I'll hae a half
And d'ye like the way I stuck it on that wee Macmerry nyaff
But the southerner crept up behind, his features wracked wi' pain
And he gubbed him wi' an ashtray, made oot o' a curling stane

10. The fight went raging on all night till opening time next day
Wi' a break for soup and stovies aff a coronation tray
It was getting kind o' obvious that neither man would win
When came the shout that stopped it all 'There's a bus trip coming in'

Chorus

11. They sing this song in Galashiels and up by Peterheid
Way down o'er the border, across the Rio Tweed
About what became o Portree, Midnight and the Gambling Man
They opened up a gift shop selling fresh air in a can

Chorus

GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY

A lone cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day,
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way,
When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw,
A-plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw.
Yippee-yi-yo, yippee-yi, ghost herd in the sky.

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel,
Their horns were black and shiny and their hots breath he could feel,
A bolt of fear shot through him as he looked up in the sky,
For he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their mournful cry.
Yippee-yi-yo, yippee-yi, ghost riders in the sky.

Their faces were gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat,
They're riding hard to catch that herd, but they ain't caught 'em yet,
They're riding hard forever on that range up in the sky,
For they've got to catch the devil's herd as they ride on hill and cry.
Yippee-yi-yo, yippee-yi, ghost riders in the sky.

The cowpokes rode on past him and he heard one call his name,
If you want to save your soul from hell a-riding on a range,
Then cowboy change your ways today, or with us you will ride,
A-trying to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies.
Yippee-yi-yo, yippee-yi, the ghost riders in the sky.

Note: The chorus was "Yippee-yi-yo, yippee-yi-aye" as I recall it from the 78rpm record we used to have.

Ben, thanks a lot! It's a half-forgotten song that brings back great memories - the old Langside climbing club used to sing it on trips to Glencoe and the northwest, going over the Ballachulish bridge. Written - correct me if I'm wrong - by Bill Hill from Edinburgh.

Subject: RE: Words to:
From: Gene

AND I thought I POSTED this when the subject came up last year, but again, couldn't find the POST.

The following excerpted from "FOR A COWBOY HAS TO SING" by Jim Bob Tinsley.

..Stan Jones and an old cowpoke named "Cap" Watts were out riding one day on the D Hill range in southern Arizona - there was unrest in the air. They began to tie down the blades on a windmill when masses of dark, fast-moving clouds appeared on the horizon forming spectral figures. "Cap" Watts warned prophetically - "Ghost riders".

..Ghost riders are bad omens in the cattle country. They generally appear when fast-moving cold air from one direction collides with warm air from a different direction, a condition that sometimes generates a series of tornadoes. Ominous cloud sillouettes, grouping, regrouping, and backlighted with vellow and sun-red accents, look to the imaginative mind like nothing more than a line of riders racing through the ragged skies. On this day. while helping to secure the windmill from possible wind damage, the youthful Jones heard for the first time the ghostly account of phantom riders in the sky trying to catch the devil's herd. He never forgot the story. And it became the theme for one of the most haunting cowboy songs of all times.

.."Cap" Watts worked at times for the D Hill Ranch near Douglas, Arizona. The Texas-born cowboy operated his own "saddle blanket" outfit in the Perilla Mountains east of Douglas for awhile. The grizzled cowboy died in 1934.

..Stanley Davis Jones was born on 5 June 1914 in Douglas. Arizona. He served his countny in the U.S. Navy during World War II and earned a degree in Zoology at the University of California. While working as a park ranger in Death Valley in 1949, Jones acted as a guide for movie location scouts during the filming of "Three Godfathers", starring John Wayne. Harry Carey, Jr. and Pedro Armendariz. He had learned the fundamentals of guitar playing from Arizona cowboys, so it was only natural that he treat the Hollywood group to his own special brand of campfire music. With some reluctance he sang the haunting words to a song he had made up himself from the legend told by "Cap" Watts many years before.

.."Riders In The Sky" changed the life of Stan Jones almost overnight. Later in the year he appeared in the Gene Autry movie, "Riders in The Sky", Which featured his song. He also wrote the theme song and had a role in the 1951 movie "Whirlwind", starring Gene Autry. Songs for the John Ford 1950 production, "Wagonmaster", starring Ben Johnson, were written by Stan Jones and he composed the title song to the John Wayne movie "The Searchers" in 1956. He also wrote compositions for Walt Disney TV and movie films.

..The writer, actor, dreamer and creator of songs died on 13 December 1963 and was buried in his hometown of Douglas. Arizona.

Let us not forget Tom Paxton's parody "Yuppies In The Sky" from his One Million Lawyers and Other Disasters album.

As historical setting, the emmence popularity of Ghost Riders of course prompted the dreaded "sequel". One song that was released to try to cash in on the moment was "The Phantom Stage"

Hey John,

Looks like I should have kept that little sideline out the of the thread as it has caused much confusion. And another song that we in Australia sing to the same tune (at least in the Irish community, well Dubliners, in South Australia) is the Wild Colonial Boy.

There was a wild coloniald boy Jack Duggin (Doolin, Doolan, Dolan, Duggan, etc) was his name (Boy I love folk!!!)

Benjamin B.

Bill Hill wrote the words to a parody of Ghost Riders. It was named the Portree Kid (The Teuchter wha' cam frae Skye). The original words that started this thread, and the tune that everyone uses were written by Stan Jones.

Vaughn Monroe did one of the earliest commercial versions, as I recall. Since, it has been done by many people, not the least of the later ones was by the late Johnny Cash. Done with power and feeling, it can overcome expectations of "camp" and can be quite dark and moving.

The first commercial recording of this song appears to be by Burl Ives, recorded on 17 FEB 1949 for Decca (Decca 38445). It reached #21 on the hit record charts. Vaughn Monroe had the biggest hit ever, staying a #1 from 14 MAY through 23 Jul 1949. The Vaughn Monroe version was recorded 14 MAR 1949 for RCA, about one month after the Burl Ives version.

Many years ago I sang at a folk club in which the landlord, an Irishman, was wont to come in after the interval and give a song. On my occasion he sang 'The Wild Colonial Boy' to the tune of 'Ghost Riders'. I wish I could remember the place, but it was a long time ago.   I do remember the Burl Ives and Vaughn Monroe versions very well. I was sixteen when they came out and I thought it a great song. Pete Seeger played banjo on Burl Ives record I believe.

Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon recorded the following on their 1994 CD, "Prairie Home Invasion":

CONVOY IN THE SKY
Billy Clark, Trio Music/ Fort Knox Music (BMI)

The night was dark and stormy
And the roads were wet with rain
As Jimmy Jones rolled on and on
His destination Maine
He'd like to stop and rest awhile
But his freight just wouldn't keep
His body ached his mind felt numb
His eyes had closed with sleep

He thought about the time he lost
With a woman Mary Lou
And then his thoughts turned to his wife
He'd promised he'd be true
Temptation had stepped in his path
And he had failed the test
But if he stopped he knew his conscience
Wouldn't let him rest

Chorus:
Roll along (roll along)
Roll along (roll along)
Convoy in the sky
Convoy in the sky

There in the night he saw the lights
A truck stop just ahead
One cup of coffee he would have
Enough to clear his head
As he stepped on the running board
Strange music he did hear
And suddenly before his eyes
The truck stop disappeared

There in its place a trailer sat
Its color black as death
And seated there beneth the wheel
Sat the devil himself
And Jimmys heart was filled with fear
For there before his eyes
A caravan of trailers came
A rollin' through the skies

Chorus

The riders told of deeds they'd done
And detours they had made
Now driving for the devil
Was the price that they had paid
There is no time to stop and rest
He heard the devil cry
As he led the convoy on across
The dark and stormy sky

Chorus

Subject: Lyr Add: SALTIRE IN THE SKY
From: Tattie Bogle

We recently did a concert in Edinburgh on St Andrew's day, and it struck me that there are very few songs about St Andrew, so I wrote the following song.

The verse about the primary school arose out of a TV report on the leader of the Scottish government, Alex Salmond, who was seen to be singing the two songs mentioned. The Saltire is the diagonal cross of St Andrew, white cross on a blue background. "Bings" are heaps of spoil from old shale mines.

It is to the same tune as "Ghost Riders in the Sky", which has bee previously used to good effect by another Scottish songwriter, Bill Hill, in his song, "The Portree Kid" which I believe is in the DT.

SALTIRE IN THE SKY
©Words TS 27.11.07.
Tune: "Ghost Riders in the Sky"

While cruising down the M9 on a clear and starry night,
I drew my breath in sharply as I saw a wondrous sight,
For hovering o'er the Winchburgh bing up with the stars so high
There was an unmistakeable...saltire in the sky.

Chorus
Ho-ri-o-ri, ho-ro-o-ro, a saltire in the sky.

I told my friends of what I'd seen, and all of them just laughed,
They made me feel a numpty when they said that I was daft,
They said I must be on something, they asked who did supply
The dope that made me think I saw...a saltire in the sky.

Chorus
Ho-ri-o-ri, ho-ro-o-ro, a saltire in the sky.

When Alex went to Primary School, the TV men were there,
He wanted to be "a punk rocker with flowers in his hair",
But then he did his best, his credibility to save,
As we heard him gi'e it laldy...singing "Scotland the Brave"

Chorus
Scotland the Brave, Scotland the Brave, As Alex sang "Scotland the Brave".

But then I started thinking of this cross in sky so clear,
The symbol of our heritage and all we hold so dear,
As Andrew fished with Simon by the shores of Galilee,
When first they heard the call from one...who said "Now follow me"

Chorus
Now follow me, now follow me,
They heard the call and went with the one who said "Now follow me".

They walked and talked all afternoon, till sundown came, and then,
Their new-found friend said, "You shall both be fishers of men",
But when they crucified him on the hill of Calvary,
Andrew said "A saltire...will be the cross for me"

Chorus
Saltire for me, saltire for me, A saltire will be cross for me.

But now my thinking's over, and it's time to end this rhyme,
Don't let the tale of Andrew get lost in mists of time,
And maybe they were vapour trails from aeroplanes flying high,
But I definitely DID see...a saltire in the sky

Chorus
Hi-ri-o-ri, hi-ri-o-ro, A Saltire in the sky

Subject: Lyr Add: PHANTOM AUTO-TRUCKERS (Dave Pearce)
From: Ross Campbell

Another parody. written by Dave Pearce for the Fylde Folk Festival production of "The Return of the Skate-Nob Warriors" in 1990, "Phantom Auto-Truckers" recalls the hey-day of the Fleetwood fishing industry when thousands worked on the dock and loads of fish-boxes were moved around from market to dealers on motorised flat-bed trolleys called Auto-Trucks. Manufactured by Lister in their thousands, these vehicles have long since been replaced by fork-lift trucks and other load-shifting means, and have almost completely disappeared. If anybody has one to spare, Fleetwood Museum or the Jacinta Trust would be interested!

PHANTOM AUTO-TRUCKERS
Dave Pearce

An old fish-packer went walking out one cold & stormy day.
Down by the Iceland corner, he stopped along his way;
When all at once he saw a gang of Phantom Auto-Truckers;
They raced toward him across the dock - They were really dangerous people!

Chorus:-
Yippy Aye Ay - Yippy Aye Oh - those Ghost-Truckers in the sky.

They started at the first ship and headed down the track;
Their skin-tight jeans were fish-slime thick, their greasy hair flew back.
They thundered past Ross Whittaker's and headed for the curve;
Then the leader hit a broken grid - and nearly lost his nerve!

Young barrow-lads rode on the back as the truckers made their run;
Never held on to the driver as he gave his truck the gun.
And when the "Autos" jumped the Dock, the young kids showed no fear;
They could spit six times and roll a fag while the driver was changing gear.

In a cloud of stinking diesel smoke, the truckers roared on by;
The old man had his memories, a tear was in his eye.
He'd been an Auto-driver, and he let out a cheer
For the track-stars of the Docklands - the Fish-Dock Charioteers!

I've been looking for the author of the original "Ghost-Riders" song since we did the show - thanks, Mudcat, for putting me onto Stan Jones.

Always fun to revisit the past - these days the cracking whip and plug for Microsoft could be seen as a bid for the women fascinated by a risqué scene of two...watch it or Madam Fifi will be advertising folksinging as a speciality.

In Esperanto:

Vakero iris rajdi dum malluma venta tag'

GHOST CHICKENS IN THE SKY
As sung by Barry Ward on "Lonesome County Road" (2013)

An old cowboy went out and bought a ranch in sixty-five,
Spent all of his money and no cattle could he buy,
So he called up Colonel Sanders and he said: "What should I do?"
The colonel said: "Buy chickens and build a chicken coop."

Now he's been a chicken rancher since he was twenty-four,
Yeah, workin' for the colonel now for thirty years or more,
Ah, fixin' all those chickens up and sendin' 'em to fry.
Now they want revenge, those chickens in the sky.

Chickens to bake, and chickens to fry,
Ghost chickens in the sky.

He was out a-walkin' on his chicken ranch one day.
He stopped along the chicken coop as he went along his way,
And all at once a rotten egg it hit him in the eye.
It was a terrible sight: ghost chickens in the sky.

Their beaks are black and shiny and their eyes are fiery red.
These chickens got no feathers, folks; these chickens all are dead.
And they pecked on that rancher; he died by the claw.
They fixed him extra crispy and they served him with coleslaw.

Chickie-I-A, chickie-I-O,
Ghost chickens in the sky.

Now let this song remind you: if you want eternal peace,
Don't raise up harmless poultry for to cook 'em in the grease,
For if you raise animals that you will someday kill,
A chicken may come to haunt you, oh, but tofu never will.

Chickie-I-A, chickie-I-O,
Ghost chickens in the sky,
Ghost chickens in the sky.

GHOST JOGGERS IN THE SKY
As recorded by Joggers, Inc. on "Russ Abbot's Madhouse" (1984)

I remember I went walking out one dark and windy night.
Up the road I wandered walking where the lamps were bright.
It was then I heard an eerie sound coming from up high.
A group of men in track suits came jogging through the sky.

Look at us go, limping away,
Ghost joggers in the sky.

One of them approached me and his breath was cold as ice.
His voice was weak and croaking, and he gave me this advice:
"Son, don't buy a track suit, 'cause running ain't no buzz.
You'll end up six feet under, or jogging 'round with us."

Look at us go, limping away,
Ghost joggers in the sky.

Well, marathons were all the rage; I saw it come to use,
So I bought myself a track suit and a pair of training shoes.
I run like mad around the streets and sprinted through the crowds
Till I crashed in a heap and I found myself jogging through the clouds.

Look at us go, limping away,
Ghost joggers in the sky.

So those of you who are trapped at home, not used to getting out,
Should buy themselves some running gear and see what it's about.
It's the best escape you'll ever find; just you wait and see.
When you find us jogging next to you, you'll find you're really free.

Look at us go, limping away,
Ghost joggers in the sky. [REPEAT AND FADE.]

GHOST MINERS IN THE SKY
As recorded by Owen Money & Lloyd Davies on "The Valley Boys of Wales" (2009)

I was drinking up in Merthyr at a place called Downers....
I stopped for fish and whistles at the chippie by the Coop [pronounced "cwop"]
There was thunder in the valley; there was lightning in the sky.
I stood in in the bus shelter just to keep my Woodbine dry.

Then all at once a distant sound not easy to define.
It sounded like ten thousand men were marching all in line,
And then the clouds they parted and I heard the mournful cry.
A host of ghostly miners were marching through the sky.

Yippee-I-A, yippee-I-O,
There were ghost miners in the sky.

Their hobnail boots were dirty and their picks were shining bright.
The lads ... dark and stormy night.
They had cold and stern red(?) faces; they had sweat upon their lips.
I must have gotten frightened; I dropped my bag of chips.

One of them looked straight at me and said: "Now, young man, think.
You spend your time on foolish things like gambling and drink.
Young man, change your ways today, for this I've come to tell:
You'll stoke the devil's boilers from the coal seam down in Hell."

Yippee-I-A, yippee-I-O,
Ghost miners in the sky.

Ever since that fateful night my life was turned around.
No longer in the pubs and clubs and betting shops I'm found.
So listen to my story, 'cause it'll make you think.
Keep off the marijuana and don't touch the dreaded drink.

Yippee-I-A, yippee-I-O
Ghost miners in the sky. [REPEAT AND FADE.]
