If you're not familiar with Topic's monumental "Voice of the People" set of CDs, it consists of twenty (20!) CDs of field recordings collected by Peter Kennedy. It's probably the most impressive collection o its type ever assembled, with artists that include : Sarah Makem, Geoff Ling, Mary Anne Haynes, Tommy McGarth, Pop Maynard, Willie Clancy, Jimmy McBeath, Paddy Tunney, Harry Cox, Rose Murphy, Joe Heanny Belle Stewart, Phil Tanners, Eddie Butcher, Turp Brown, Margaret Barry, Walter Pardon, Martin Gorman, Joseph Taylor, Jimmy McBeath, Micho Russell, Jeannie Robertson. Cyril Pocher, Tom Willet, Johnny Doughty, John Rae, Sam Larner, Lizzie Higgins, Turp Brown, George Ling, Walter Pardon, Frank Verrill, Harry Upton, Micho Russell, Bob Hart, Bob Roberts, Willie Scott, Fred Jordon, Packie Manus, Byrne, Liz Jefferies, Stanley Robertson, Geordie Hannah, John McDonald, Ben Butcher, Freda Palmer, John Reilly, Phoebe Smith, Enos White, Scan Tester, Eddie Butchers, Michael Coleman, Sarah Anne O'Neill, Paddy Breen, Davie Stewart, Jinky Wells, Tom Lennihan, Jimmy Nights, Bob Cann, Maggy Murphy, Bampton Morris, Charlie Wills, Sheila Stewart, Jasper Smith, May Bradley, Percy Brown, Oscar Woods, Stephen Baldwin, Walter Bulwer, Font Whatling, Fred Whiting, Sarah Makem, Amy Birch, Wiggie Smith, George Spicer etc. etc.

These are the people that the likes of Ewan MacColl and Bert Lloyd learned their material from; the CDs typically have 20-25 tracks each, come with lavish notes and are organized by subject material:

TSCD651 COME LET US BUY THE LICENCE 'Songs of courtship & marriage'

TSCD652 MY SHIP SHALL SAIL THE OCEAN 'Songs of tempest & sea battles, sailor lads & fishermen'

TSCD653 O'ER HIS GRAVE THE GRASS GREW GREEN 'Tragic Ballads'

TSCD654 FAREWELL, MY OWN NATIVE LAND 'Songs of exile & emigration'

TSCD655 COME ALL MY LADS THAT FOLLOW THE PLOUGH 'The life of rural working men & women'

TSCD656 TONIGHT I'LL MAKE YOU MY BRIDE 'Ballads of true & false lovers'

TSCD657 FIRST I'M GOING TO SING YOU A DITTY 'Rural fun & frolics'

TSCD658 A STORY I'M JUST ABOUT TO TELL 'Local events & national issues'

TSCD659 RIG-A-JIG-JIG 'Dance music of the south of England'

TSCD660 WHO'S THAT AT MY BED WINDOW? 'Songs of love & amorous encounters'

TSCD661 MY FATHER'S THE KING OF THE GYPSIES 'Music of English & Welsh travellers & gypsies'

TSCD662 WE'VE RECEIVED ORDERS TO SAIL 'Jackie Tar at sea & on shore'

TSCD663 THEY ORDERED THEIR PINTS OF BEER AND BOTTLES OF SHERRY 'The joys & curse of drink'

TSCD664 TROUBLES THEY ARE BUT FEW 'Dance tunes & ditties'

TSCD665 AS ME AND MY LOVE SAT COURTING 'Songs of love, courtship & marriage'

TSCD666 YOU LAZY LOT OF BONE-SHAKERS 'Songs & dance tunes of Seasonal events'

TSCD667 IT FELL ON A DAY A BONNY SUMMER DAY 'Ballads'

TSCD668 TO CATCH A FINE BUCK WAS MY DELIGHT 'Songs of hunting & poaching'

TSCD669 RANTING & REELING 'Dance music of the north of England'

TSCD670 THERE IS A MAN UPON THE FARM 'Working men & women in song'

CAMSCO has been selling these CDs for $12.98 each, and, IMO, they've been a bargain. We're now able (for a very limited time) to offer the complete set at a price of $200 (less than I have been paying wholesale.) It would make a spectacular Christmas present for anyone who loves traditional music.

Just a quick correction: The Voice of the People tracks were mostly NOT collected by Peter Kennedy. In fact, the folks who compiled these CDs, Reg Hall and Topic records president Tony Engle, have publicly stated (in an interview with Musical Traditions online magazine) how unhelpful Kennedy was, for whatever reason. I'm not sure if any of his recordings appear. Mostly, they consist of recordings made for Topic records by such collectors as Hall, Mike Yates, etc. Also, early commercial sides and private collections were accessed.

The confusion may have come about because Topic had originally sought to reissue the Kennedy/Lomax Folk Songs of England Ireland Scotland and Wales series, and when they found they could not, they created this series instead. In my opinion, it's better. The Kennedy/Lomax series is now being reissued on Rounder, with three volumes so far appearing.

The Voice of the People set does have some shortcomings, but overall it is an amazing achievement. At $200.00, I agree with Dick, I'd snap these up. Except I have a set already...

I've been tremendously impressed by this series! Any of you who are interested in the traditional music of the British Isles ought to jump on this offer like a turkey on a june bug. Caroline and I have both ordered the complete set -- she as a surprise Christmas present for me, and me as a surprise Christmas present for her. Fortunately, Dick Greenhaus realized that we only needed one set for the two of us. It pays to do business with a good friend, rather than with some huge and totally anonymous corporate entity.

The Topic website has details of lots of special offers, including the complete set of the VOTP 20 CDs for the extremely reasonable price of £150. They are worth far more (and I paid more when I bought them!) Go to this link Topic Records: Special Offers for details. Max your credit card, deny your children the latest Harry Potter stuff, refuse to buy that special something for your SO; just go out and buy these! You won't regret it.

My apologies to Reg Hall and Tony Engel, who deserve all the credit there is for this collection. I was misinformed about Mr. Kennedy's role in this project.

Geordie John- due to the costs of double shipping the price of the set delivered to the UK is 158 pounds. I don't know what Topic charges for shipping. I also don't know how the tax structure in the UK compares to the import duty (though somehow it seems wrong to charge import duty on CDs recorded and produced in the UK.) I'd guess that it's a bit less expensive for UK residents to buy directly from Topic.

In either case, though, I think it's a helluva bargain.

Too bad Topic doesn't pay a percentage to the Mudcat. Dick Greenhaus, of the fantastic Digital Tradition AND Camsco Music, does! Keep that in mind when you make your purchases.

If I slighted the good folk of Ireland in my previous post, it was merely for the sake of brevity. Forgive me.

It is a great series I highly recommend. May I add that each CD comes with a booklet informing about the songs, the singers, and printing the lyrics. Please correct me if the cheap complete offer doesn't have these booklets.

UK buyers beware. Topic price is £150 + VAT ie £176.25p.

I will not buy from Topic because they are guilty of sharp practice - quoting prices in large numbers but putting plus VAT in small letters later in advert!!

Happy listening to those who buy. Cheers Geordie John

A refresher. (in case any innarested parties missed this.)

If you like good field recordings of good non-commercial singers, you won't find a better collection. And I'm told that, even with shipping and import duties, CAMSCO cheaper (by a bit) than Topic, even on overseas orders.

I got 'em, and they're great! But then, I like folk music with the bark still on the tree. Yes, Wolfgang, the booklets are included.

John- I'm delighted when people buy from CAMSCO instead of directly from Topic, but I think that advertising a pre-tax price is normal industry practice, with no intent to deceive.

VAT or no VAT, Topic is doing a marvelous job of making music available.
