22 Nov 01 - 06:36 PM (#597906) Subject: The Stone From: Llanfair Taking note of a general fascination for quizzes and puzzles, does anyone else do "The Stone"? It's an online game made up of incredibly difficult, frustrating and totally compulsive puzzles. If you put "thestone" into a search engine, you can try some for free. The stone pendant that you need to do the game costs £15. but guarantees hours of entertainment. I've completed 20 of the 50-odd puzzles so far. Cheers, Bron. |

22 Nov 01 - 07:31 PM (#597922) Subject: RE: The Stone From: GUEST,Paul Actually, I don't understand what they want. In the free puzzle '3x' where they give a couple of hints, there is a map of New Mexico and a UFO. They say put this together, and you'll have the answer... So, I obviously thought of Roswell, but told I was wrong :-( Any hints? |
|
23 Nov 01 - 04:37 AM (#597973) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Llanfair It's more specific than that, Paul. They want to know exactly where. If you are seriously stumped, I'll give you further nudges. It is against the ethos of the game to give answers outright!!! Cheers, Bron. |

|
27 Nov 01 - 08:01 PM (#598920) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Sorcha I don't get any of it either. I tried the Roswell one. I can't get much more explicit than Roswell, New Mexico, Area 47, aliens, UFO's.......forget it. I don't need this in my Stress Level. |

27 Nov 01 - 08:05 PM (#598925) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Giac Argh! Bron this may plunge me into the pit. Rearranging the puzzle is like those little plastic tray things where you slide the pieces around until you complete a picture, or make the numbers consecutive. I could do those okay, when I was ten. Now, it just makes my eyes cross. I'll try it again though. Thanks ????? Mary |

28 Nov 01 - 04:13 AM (#599192) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Llanfair Sorcha, you just got the number wrong!!! Most of the puzzles have taken hours of searching the net for information, which I enjoy doing, although a lot of the information is centred around the USA. Cheers, Bron. |

28 Nov 01 - 11:42 AM (#599403) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Mrrzy I was told Area 57 was wrong. Was it supposed to be right? Also, although I solved the Eye of the Storm, I haven't managed the apple or any of the others, not even the one that looks like Confucious. Will keep at it, have no access to anything like work till they get the virus out of my machine... |

28 Nov 01 - 06:43 PM (#599735) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Llanfair Mrrzy, the number's still wrong!!! take away 6!!! I've just looked at the free puzzles, and there are a couple I haven't done yet. Oh goody!!!!! Alison, check out the history via a search engine, and the title is also a clue. Sometimes it helps to lighten or darken the screen, other images appear. Also, if you use your mouse to go over a picture, sometimes there is a reaction. Cheers, Bron. |

29 Nov 01 - 01:54 PM (#600357) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Mrrzy Yes, I noticed that, and the action is often somewhere else. Look at the goat and devil one, focus on something and the goat gets its throat slit. Very nice. Oho. |

29 Nov 01 - 02:14 PM (#600370) Subject: RE: The Stone From: GUEST,Paul I dunno, Bron The problem with these puzzles is that you don't know when you've got the right answer. With, say, a cryptic crossword, there's a certain elegance, and however hard the clue is, you're pretty damn sure that it's right when you've solved it. With these you're not... To take the New Mexico/UFO example, you said to be more precise, so I searched and found 'Foster's ranch' (where the weather balloon landed). There is no reason for 'Area xx' being a better answer, other than the puzzle creator decided it was the right one. I find that too frustrating Paul P.S. Any clues on the Shakespeare / Tempest one??? |
|
29 Nov 01 - 02:30 PM (#600387) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Mrrzy Yes - you've got it already! (That was my clue). Now, any help available for the goat/devil/newspaper one, I've gotten something that ought to be right but isn't? |
|
29 Nov 01 - 02:43 PM (#600399) Subject: RE: The Stone From: GUEST,Paul Hey? I've got it? I tried 'tempest' but got another 'not quite right screen' Do you have the co-ordinates (x, y, 1, 2, 3 etc) for your goat/devil/newspaper one? I'm not sure which one you mean Paul |

29 Nov 01 - 02:50 PM (#600409) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Noreen Look up the name of the mayor on the newspaper in google, and you'll find it, Mrrz.) |
|
29 Nov 01 - 02:54 PM (#600411) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Noreen Yes, Paul, I'm finding that frustrating. I know about the Easter Island statues, and I sorted the puzzle, but I can't find the exact word it's looking for! |
|
29 Nov 01 - 02:57 PM (#600418) Subject: RE: The Stone From: GUEST,Paul Noreen, That was the only one I found easy! Do a Google search for ["Easter Island" Statues Force]without the square brackets of course! and you'll find it in a minute Paul |
|
29 Nov 01 - 03:04 PM (#600424) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Noreen yes, it was the next word i tried! I'm going now before I get addicted. Thanks, Bron! |

29 Nov 01 - 03:27 PM (#600439) Subject: RE: The Stone From: SharonA This is WAY over my head. I needed a hint to complete today's Mad Blast word search, fer chrissake! (I also need the "reward" of having the computer tell me I've solved a puzzle!) My brain cells just ain't skewed for this sort of torture. Sharon (hanging head in shame and shuffling away...) |

29 Nov 01 - 05:49 PM (#600538) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Llanfair Glad to see you are having fun!!! Paul, I like cryptic crosswords, too, but if you do get a wrong answer, it throws the whole puzzle off. You are told when the answer is right, and can then move on!!! Cheers, Bron. |
|
29 Nov 01 - 06:02 PM (#600545) Subject: RE: The Stone From: GUEST,Paul Bron, Don't think you got my point. With crosswords there is an answer that you know beyond all doubt is correct. With these, there could be several 'correct' answers. The puzzle maker has decided which is the best. I find that too frustrating Paul |

04 Dec 01 - 11:21 AM (#603390) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Mrrzy Paul, try the FULL NAME of the appropriate piece. Also, I know who that "mayor" is on the goat-devil one, but I'm not getting the right answer. I am now completely failing to solve the Easter island puzzle so I can't try the hint we got... but I do have a new word to try, we'll see if that works... if I ever get that puzzle solved again! |

04 Dec 01 - 11:35 AM (#603403) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Mrrzy Whew, that took for bloody ever! But that's the Watchers done... now, back to that bloody goat! |

04 Dec 01 - 11:59 AM (#603421) Subject: RE: The Stone From: Mrrzy Gave up on the goat for now. Gave up on the one that doesn't quite anagram to In The Beginning ditto; any hints on the one with the babydoll whose eyes open, the teddy that moves, the shadowy figure, and the flushing ladies room? |
