Downsizing is of course another term for rationalization :) can I also nominate any verb constructed by adding the suffix -ization to a noun! |

Number and Gender of the Owners in the Name Those make no sense to me at all. And the following banishments are questionable: Dysfunctional - What would they have us use instead? Malfunctioning? How is that any better? Ethnic cleansing is detestable as a euphemism for genocide, but it doesn't mean genocide only. I understand the term was originally coined to mean, "forced relocation based on ethnic identity." The United States practiced ethnic cleansing when it forced Japanese Americans to live in "relocation camps" during WW2. As awful as this was, it wasn't genocide. Is there a better term for it? Prioritize - If this means "rank by importance or urgency," it is a useful concept. I have frequently had to ask my boss to prioritize my list of assignments, for example. What's wrong with that? Reaganomics - We need a name for Ronald Reagan's distinctive economic theories. You could say "Reagan economics," but why bother? Victimless crime - Some crimes certainly are victimless. What's wrong with saying so? Here's my own list of terms that ought to be outlawed: No Trespassing. Since trespassing is, by definition, an offense, it ought to go without saying that we shouldn't do it. A sign saying "No Trespassing" makes about as much sense as one saying "No Stealing" or "No Vandalism." "Private" or "Keep Out" would be more to the point. No Trespassing Without Permission. This is even worse. I actually saw this on a sign once. Does it imply that I can get permission to trespass? Caucasian. My son's school uses this term when collecting data about people's racial or ethnic identity. If any of my ancestors came from the Caucasus Mountains, I'm not aware of it. I don't mind being called white if other people are to be called black, brown, etc., but since the favored terms are African-American, Asian-American, Native American, etc., we should, in the interest of parallelism, call ourselves European-Americans. Caucasian is the equivalent of Negro and Mongoloid, both of which have been virtually banished already. Thusly. This seems like a silly word to me, since "thus" is already an adverb, and the "-ly" suffix adds nothing to its meaning. |

"Caucasian" in that sense is an abomination. Equivalent to "Ethiopian" as a way of saying "black". Inaccurate, misleading, insulting and preserving pseudo-scientific racial classifications that don't deserve to be preserved. Fortunately use of the term seems to be pretty well limited to North America.

Back in October, 1998, I sent a query to the web site now called The Mavens' Word of the Day about "thusly." It was then called "Jesse's Word of the Day" and was edited by Jesse Sheidlower. Jesse later left Random House to become the North American Principal Editor for the Oxford English Dictionary. You can see my query and Jesse's reply at the link above. And while I'm at it, here's a word that ought to be temporarily banished: Incredible. It is used as hyperbole so often that people have forgotten its literal meaning, and that it is generally more desirable for things to be credible. When I hear a politician praised as an "incredible orator," or that a certain movie has "incredible special effects," I always smile at the unintended irony. |
