Artist is Capercallie, on the Blood is Strong album. That is all I found.

Thanks for responding!

I only know Capercaillie had the song recorded for the "The Blood Is Strong"-CD. That CD was released in 1997 in the UK, according to cdnow.com (I looked that up just now).

I presume the song is traditional (which is why I didn't mention a singer or date), but I may be wrong...

I just checked the Capercaillie Web-site, and the Lyrics section for The Blood is Strong doesn't list this song. Could you check the title of this song?

It is correct--the site only give 8 tracks from a 25 track album. See here!

Ah. I see it now. In the listing of the CD, it gives all the tracks. Apparently, in the Lyrics section they only list the tracks they have words for.

I'll have to look around and ask on one or another of the Gaelic mailing lists. I see the listing in the Discography section shows "MacLeod/Shaw". Wonder if that is Margaret Fay Shaw, who has at least one songbook out.

In reply to your queries, Gun Teann Mi Ris Na Ruinn Tha Seo is sort of traditional, written by one John MacLeod who died in 1911. He was from Leódhas (Lewis), and though he spent some years in Canada as a lay preacher, he returned to Leódhas before his death. He wrote a number of beautiful songs, including An t-Eilean mu Thuath and Fagail Bhernaraidh, also on The Blood Is Strong. The Shaw mentioned would be Donald Shaw, Karen Matheson's husband and another founding member of Capercaillie. I'm afraid I don't have the words, but if I can obtain a book on him, I might be able to get them. I have a friend in Leódhas that I can email regarding the matter.

I forgot to mention that I do know the song AN T-EILEAN MU THUATH, and here are the words:

An t-eilean mu thuath, an iomull a' chuain,
An t-eilean 's an d'fhuair mi m'àrach;
Far an d'fhuair mi 's mi òg bainne fìorghlan ri òl,
'S bha m'anam tigh'nn beò 's a' fàs leis.

An t-eilean a tuath, an t-eilean tha fuar,
'Se Leódhas bho thuath mo ghràidh e,
Far nach cluinn mi ri m'bheò bhi sealg no bhi 'g òl
No làmhadh no òrd air an t-Sàbaid.

Nach mis' tha gu truagh gu tùrsach 's fo ghruaim
Bho chuir mi ri tuath mo chùlaibh;
Nuair choisich i dìan chuir i curs' oirre 'n iar
'S thug dorchadas dhìomsa Mùirneag.

Chan eil math domh no stàth bhi tuiream 's a' chàs,
Chan aithreachas tràth a th'ann domh;
Chan urrainn mi snàmh gu cuideachd mo ghràidh
No coiseachd air tràigh do Leódhas.

By the way, guys, the reason the Capercaillie site doesn't list all the tracks is that the cd was originally released with what you see on the site. They rereleased it with additional tracks later. I've been pestering them about getting the rest of them put up, and in fact, I've emailed them everything they didn't have with the exception of:

fac thu na feidh

fagail bhernaraidh

gun teann mi ris na ruinn tha

(gura tu) mo bhean chomuinn

oran nan teine (cape breton song)

se mo gradh na gamhna geala

If anybody out there has one of these, we'll all love you forever if you'll post it!

Still buggin' anybody who might have these songs - we've tracked down the rest on the above listed previously.

Fagail Bhernaraidh & Gun Teann Mi Ris Na Ruinn Tha Seo, both by John MacLeod of Lewis

Se Mo Gradh na Gamhna Geala
Oran nan Teine (cape breton song)

The orriginal "blood is strong" album was released in the late 80's, and was the sound trak to the TV documentry of the same name. That album only contained the traks listed on the Capercaillie web page. The CD "blood is strong" containes traks from two other TV shows that Capercaillie provided music for, one about Prince Charles (Windsor) stay on the lsle of Bernaray, (hence Fagail Bhernaraidh being on the CD)

For the record, I should like to point out that Fagail Bhearnaraigh as performed by Capercaille is based on a composition by DUNCAN MacLeod of Berneray, NOT by a John MacLeod of Lewis. It was one of the songs that you could hear in the background of the television programme Prince among Islands, featuring Prince Charles and the island of Berneray, Harris, (now connected by causeway to North Uist), and narrated by Selina Scott. I notice that the song is repeatedly credited wrongly in a database which suggests that it was composed by I. MacLeod rather than D. MacLeod. As these databases are only as useful as they are reliable, I would urge those who have taken upon themselves the task of maintaining databases and of presenting information on the internet as if it were authoritative to check their facts and to amend their erroneous misrepresentations accordingly.

Also to note, that Fagail Bhernaraidh and Lorn Them was originally on Prince Among Islanda, but was included on reissue of Blood Is Strong

Hash, Mark, I am not seeing question marks on my browser. From Celtic Lyrics Corner
Gun teann mi ris na ruinn tha seo a-nis a sgrìobhadh sìos
Mi anns a bhàt' a cuimhneachadh air tìr nan glinn as brèagh'
Far am b'òg a bha mi uaireigin dol cuairt don Charragh Liath
A dh'fheitheamh air na lachain ann 's a mhadainn tighinn on iar

Bhiodh grunn de dh'àrmunn chòir againn nuair thòisicheadh an t-sealg
Is chliunneadh tus' an stàirneanaich "bombardaigeadh" bhiodh garbh
Cuid a faighinn beò às dhiubh cuid eile leòint' is marbh
Na coin gan tòirt air tìr thugainn as ìnnean nan tonn garbh

Is iomadh sgrìob a thug mi ann nuair bhiodh an t-sìde doirbh
Is ealach thug mi dhachaidh às de dh'eòin ghlas agus sgairbh
Sin dh'fhàgadh m'inntinn sòlasach nuair chithinn torr dhiubh marbh
'S mun tigeadh àm bhi tarruinn às bhiodh gad dhiubh dheànamh dearbht'
