Could someone point me toward the tune (chords, midi file, or other) to "Who Threw The Overalls In Mistress Murphy's Chowder"? Thanks!

Use the blue search box in the upper right corner and search for "chowder" or some other part of the song in the Digital Tradition database. The tune is included (and downloadable). If my current problem playing the tunes is just my computer, you will be able to hear the tune from the "click here to play"

OK, if I did it right, you should be able to access the tune by pressing CLICK HERE TO PLAY. This is the tune to "Mrs. Murphy's Chowder," and it doesn't seem to fit the lyrics about the overalls in the chowder. Are they one and the same tune, Susan?

Well, I checked there earlier, but did not see the "Click here to play". Just now I looked again, to verify my impression~~nope, not there. Maybe you have it on the downloaded version?? You are not alone on not being able to play them anyhow. My old machine is about to collapse, I think.

Your reply was not there yet when I started mine, Joe~~not the same tune at all. I remember this from long years ago~~perhaps by Bing Crosby? Some of my musician friends do this regularly, with only small variations.

I was just singing this to myself I was:

Mrs. Murphy gave a party just about a week ago.
Everything was plentiful. The Murphys, they're not slow.

Not credited to the author: George L. Geifer, 1898. Should be Mrs. Murphy, not Mistress.

What is the abbreviation for "Mistress?"

I've always heard the song sung as "... Mistress Murphy's Chowder ..." and I'm pretty sure I first learned the tune from old sheet music that had it as "Mistress" too.
Also, I learned it as "Tim Nolan," not "McGinty."

Which is/are the original(s)?

You can also hear Edward M. Favor's 1901 recording on YouTube and you can make an mp3 from that.

I wasn't familiar with Favor, but he was an actor, singer and vaudeville star, who recorded a lot of Tin Pan Alley songs, including many written by Irish American songwriters. Several of his recordings, done on those old cylinders, are posted on YouTube now.

The United States Catalogue of Copyright Proprietors, 1899, gives Giefer's title as "...Mistress Murphy's..."

Which isn't to say that it wasn't pronounced as "missus" from the start. The vast majority of references to the song since then have "Mrs. Murphy."
