I deleted the e-mail I received and didn't open the attachment - but I did send an e-mail to the sender to say I wouldn't accept the attachment. Yes, we do have to send some files as attachments - photos and sound files, for example - but we should rarely have a need to send text as attachments - you can copy-paste text into e-mail messages, and then it makes things a lot safer for your recipients. -Joe Offer- |

You can set it up to update every time that you turn on the computer and go online if you want, or do it manually. |

And I set it to scan my entire system once a week. Since I nearly always delete attachments without opening them I haven't had an issue with virus's in the past several months. I tried to get people to not send me attachments - but all that did was get people mad - funny business this internet at times. Steve |

I don't understand how it can work to run it from the CD. When it's installed on the computer Live Update is a separate program. And could you register? When I first purchased the Norton, I bought the disc and a few months later it missed a virus. The Norton folks helped me out and found that I had a defective disc. They helped me clear the virus and then gave me a free download of 2001. I was more than pleased with the customer service!!! I'd suggest (as their people told me) that when purchasing, you download from the site. You can get immediate help if there is a problem. I have elected to update manually although I did have it set on automatic. I like doing some things manually because I feel better about how the software is working. For instance, with only a few exceptions, my Zone Alarm is set to ask me about everything that I open...as in, "Do you want (whatever) to have access to the internet." Some of the that old paranoia about whether something works if I can't "see" it. I have seen where others have mentioned a problem, but I sure don't have one. I like both programs and feel the combination is hard to beat. Spaw |

From: Mr Red I have had several attachments called somewhat like beanidiot.xls.lnk I guess there are a lot of folks who don't recognise lnk as an executable. and the name wrap feature and hidden extensions can hide the clues. I had a .doc recently from a very trusted guy with unknowed PC savvy so I saved it as a .txt and read it in FileView (HEX) and Editpad (=notepad). It was all about MS paying for people to "pass this on". Hmmmmmmmm....... If I was not as paranoaic I would still not have fell for that one. I assume it was benign. and This is how I choose to pass it on. |

That file I brought from home that the work virus-checker caught prompted me to get an updated virus CD from work to update my home machine, and it found a virus in my class.sys file which it then deleted in a failed attempt to Clean it. Things were fine, I had no virus on my home computer according to the latest update (last week), I created another file and lo and behold, when I got here to work there was that creepy crawly icon, and I still had the virus the new checker said wasn't there... I almost didn't get to do my final on time! I had to do shenanigans, and now I don't know if my home computer is safe or not. Also, I have no class.sys file, and things are getting funky in the operating system. Which I may need to reload anyway, because of my network icon having no properties... but what about that class.sys file? |
