Folk singing: recommended workshops

I grew up in Belgium and now live in the North West of England. I would love the chance to participate in a singing workshop with English or Irish folk singing as a theme. I figured if I ask this question now, I would be in time for the summer season. I don't mind traveling.

Given that this is a world wide forum, some indication as to how far you are willing to travel, would prove useful

An, do you mean to perform, or just be an audience member, or be a volunteer at one.

Most of the medium to large festivals have a variety of workshops including working on various aspects of singing. I know that Chippenham usually has a number of voice workshops but I don't know much about the festivals in the north west. You might try using the EFDSS site to check out what each of the different festvals near you offer. Their search page might be a good place to start. The url is:

hope that's of some help. Jude

Guest: Point taken! Places that are easy to get to in terms of time and money rather than of distance would have an advantage. (You know, with Ryanair being so cheap it might be easy to go to Dublin for instance) George: I am looking for a course so I can participate and learn as a singer. Courses that have things on offer for kids at the same time would be ace. Jude: Thank you very much for your information. I'm going to check it out tonight!

Saddleworth Folk festival is July 19 - 21, and there's a workshop on singing at that one - I can be pretty definite on that as I do the running order!!

Try the folkworks workshops at Darlington.

There are many workshops available at festivals, but I would suggest that you seek out those festivals that do not have big stars, and depend on good singers appearing out of interest. The Auchtermuchty festival is a good example, and there are a few others in the NE. On the other hand, you could get the same effect by asking the right questions at a singaround in Whitby. My advice is GET OUT THERE AND TALK TO SINGERS

Alio, Willa: Thank you very much , I will check them out! Arbuthnot: I hear what you're saying - but 'out there' is a very big place if one hasn't got the faintest idea where to go.

In the US one might try some of the week long sessions at Augusta Heritage Center or The Swannanoa Gathering. I've never been to these & I'm sure there are others. Is there nothing similar in the UK?
