But a comment on Brown Ale, which seems to be on the way out as a popular drink. (I'm not talking about Newcastle Brown, which is a different drink from that I'm talking about.) Presumably the increasing popularity of lighter beers, particularly the pasteurised piss misleadingly sold as Lager, has something to do with it? When I was a boy, Brown Ale was commonly used as a mixer with mild or bitter. Anyone remember Peter Cook & Dudley Moore advertising Watney's Brown? I asked Watneys to pay me a million pounds to say "Watneys Pale: cool clear ale; Watneys Brown: drink it down." And they threw me out. Inimitable. |

24 Nov 11 - 02:42 PM (#3262820) Subject: Lyr Add: BROWN ALE AND ARRERS (Clive Harvey) From: GUEST,Don Wise Brown Ale and Arrers was written by Clive Harvey and was sung originally by ROARING JELLY.....No idea whether they ever recorded it.....That Pete & Chris sang it is news to me, but then again,I've been out of the country for a while now........From the dim recesses of my memory: The first time I played arrers I never even scored Hardly surprising, I came nowhere near hitting the board The first dart stuck in the ceiling The second stuck in the floor The third took a cheese cob from out of the gob Of the bloke next door CH: With my brown ale and 'arrers, that's my delight Brown ale and arrers, all on a saturday night Brown ale and arrers, I wish I was there right now Brown ale and arrers down at the Old Red Cow After my first game of arrers my fame it had spread afar So the next time I played arrers, they cleared the whole public bar The first dart shattered a light bulb The second stuck in the wall The third demolished the gothic west-wing Of the Womens Institute hall CH: The landlord he'd had enough then and he tried to have me banned But the people wouldn't here of it, I was there by public demand(!) So the next time I played arrers The whole world wanted to see There was half a dozen reporters And a man from the BBC CH: The last time I played arrers, they booked it for Match of the Day But the first dart shattered a camera and the cameraman ran away The last two darts went into orbit And I'm lucky not to be dead 'Cos one of them travelled around the world And stuck in the back of my head CH: Enjoy!!
