need info on this band: The Irish Brigade (US)

This band used to play around the Midwestern US quite a bit. Seems that I saw them in Omaha once, and in Michigan another time. For some reason it seems like they were out of Indiana somewhere. Can anyone help me with a contact address/phone number/email? You can answer here or email me at mlane@accn.org.

Thanks, Mario. How the hell did you find that? I tried every search engine and didn't get anything on the band. All kinds of sites on the various Irish Brigades from the US Civil War.

Mick, We performed together a few times. The Cleveland Irish Festival run by John O'Brien in the early years. I remember a poem or recitation you had about what it is to be an Irishman. I'd love to hear it again or at least read a transcript. There was, for awhile, an Irish Brigade group out of Iowa, I think. I heard them at Kitty O'Shea's ?? in the Chicago Hilton Towers. Their cassette albums were from a previous incarnation of the group when they were called Three Sheets to the Wind.

Our group, Dave Murphy, Pat Mogan, Kevin Talty, Dennis Smith and myself, Greg Hankins, began in January of 1979 in Columbus, Ohio. For some time we've had a sideman on fiddle and banjo named Phil Franck. On two of our albums we used an instrumentalist named Doug Rudy. Our albums are: The Irish Brigade, Live ** Raised on Songs and Stories ** Leprechauns and Unicorns ** Are You Ready for This? ** Ports, Pints and Poetry ** Doublin' Up

We've performed hundreds of festivals and concerts in the midwest and northeast. In our early years we played pubs. We've been headliners for many festivals and have performed concerts with Makem & Clancy, The Dublin City Ramblers, The Barleycorn, Sons of Erin and others. Because Diet Coke is my beverage of choice I tend to remember more of our past schedules than do the other Boys of the Brigade.

There are probably one or two other "Brigades" because it is such a good name. We perform less often since the passing of Dave Murphy from cancer 3 years ago. We are booking some jobs for next March. I hope this info about our Brigade helps.

I followed The Irish Brigade all around Ohio Starting in the early 1980's. I absolutely loved their music and have about all of their records. I am so sad to read about Dave Murphy's passing. I hope he had a hell of a wake.
If the band still performs, I'd love to know when and where. I still listen to "Black & Tans".

I have been trying for years to find Leprechauns & Unicorns in ANY format, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would seriously appreciate it!
My mom raised 7 kids- on one of our many library trips, she checked out that Leprechauns & Unicorns record and it became a fast favorite of the whole family. Eventually she recorded it onto a cassette tape, and we have played it again and again over the years until it died. Now most of the 7 kids have kids of our own (my mom is up to 19 grandkids and counting), and we all want to continue the tradition.
I always figured my best bet is to find an old copy of the record somehow and have it transferred to cd. I haven't been able to find any reference to it in any other form, but I'll take whatever I can get. Please help if you can!

I grew up listening to "are you ready for this?" continuously. Love the hell out of it. Unfortunately, one of my dogs chewed up the cassette, and now I am without :_(   I would surely like to get my hands on another copy of any format. I've scoured the web and this blog is the best hit I've come across. If anyone has a copy of this, please let me know. I would like to find a way to get a copy myself.

Slainte!

Ditto on the request to Greg Hankins,

Gregg, if you are still out there, I'd love to get all of your albums on CD (or an LP or cassette if I must). As a kid, my parents played The Irish Brigade all the time. I'd love to get your albums on my iPod for my little girl. I'm at freshwater.ross@gmail.com . Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm a cousin of Pat's and I've harassed him for digital copies since moving to the south, where there are, it seems, no Irish people and certainly no Irish music. There are no digital copies of the Brigade's music just yet, but they are in the works.

Keep an eye on these groups:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mogan-and-Hankins/192592580785859

Members of the Brigade play in each, and if info comes out about Brigade songs, that's a likely place to find it.

Michelle- Murph would do that to me too... I never would sing into the microphone.

Hello, I'm from Erie PA, and my grandma used to go see them perform here in the 80's and had their live album on vinyl signed by the group. She gave me the record when I grew up. Their version of Tommy Makem's Gentle Annie is absolutely awesome, and always reminds me of her. I also loved listening to Seven Drunken Nights! She would tell stories of how muh fun it was to see them live. She even told me that with the many times she'd gone to see them They remembered her. and would come to her table and say hello. I'd like to say Thank you to them for bringing so much joy into her life and wonderful memories for her to share. I'll always remember them.   PS.. If their albums ever go on CD could someone please contact me at littledevilerie@yahoo.com.

Thanks again, and Happy St Patrick's Day!
Scott Zatkiewicz (yes last name is Polish as I'm Irish on my mom's side) lol

Josh, you are my hero. This music brought back memories of the times I spent watching The Irish Brigade perform at St. Lawrence School (Muncie, Indiana)as a fundraiser for the church. What a good time we had! Thanks, and I appreciate the hard work!

Hello!

A fellow Irish Brigade fan mailed me their self-titled live album "Irish Brigade" and two-song 45 single and I've converted both (the two songs from the single are extra tracks on the Live album) and posted them, with the other three albums I already had converted, online at...

Thank you for posting these. I would see the group in Athens every year when I was in school. I have the four albums, but they are deteriorating.
Miss the Brigade, miss Dave Murphy!

I'm from Columbus and I saw them locally many times. I know they made at least one vinyl album. I happened to be in Denver and checked Ebay for any of their music. I bought it immediately. It was in perfect shape and had been autographed by all four guys. The oddest thing was it was sold to me by someone who lived in Denver. I sent a message asking how he got it but he didn't respond.

I'm not sure what kind of information you're looking for. They did do tours throughout the midwest but I don't remember exactly where they performed except in the Pittsburgh area.

The musicians were Dave Murphy. He was the bearded front man who played the bodhran, the Celtic drum, and othe percussive instruments. He also had an advertising business. All of them had day jobs. Greg Hankins (guitar, banjo?) had a music store that, I believe, specialized in selling and repairing guitars, as well as teaching guitar. Pat Mogan, the tenor, had a job in a town south of Columbus. I don't recall what he did. I believe he played the fiddle as well. The fourth was Dennis Smith. I don't remember what he played. I believe he played the drums. He was working on his PhD in Nutrition or something like that, at OSU. I remember that he got a job in North Carolina and left the band.

All of them sang occasionally, although Greg didn't sing as often as the others. They slowed down at one point, possibly after Dennis left, and I lost track of when they were playing.

I dated Dave Murphy in 1986-87 but we didn't socialize with the band members. It was my impression that they were the equivalent of"work" friends." Several years after Dave and I stopped seeing one another, he remarried a nice woman who had a teenage daughter.
Not that long after he died of cancer at about 53. I got that information from a friend who was a piper who was involved in the music scene.

I just googled the band, which is how I came across this page. Pat and Greg are still appearing with another guy, calling themselves the Olde Irish Brigade. They have a local appearance scheduled in early September here in Columbus but, of course, everything's still up in the air here because our COVID-19 cases are rising.

May I ask why you're interested in the band. My e-mail is susan5096@yahoo.com
