Lyr Req: She Was Only Seventeen (Marty Robbins)

28 Feb 98 - 05:57 PM (#22567)
Subject: Trying to find this song
From: cpfinder@atcon.com

Hello, I am looking for a song that my parents used to love. I have an old reel with the song on it, but it is in very bad shape.

In a DEEP voice, the lines: "17, and he was one year more, 17, and he the girl adored, 17"

Followed by the first line: "She was only 17, and he was 1 year more..."

It is a story of love, challenge, and making it against the odds.

If anyone has any ideas or tips on who sang the song, or where I might find a copy of it, please reply to me.

Thanks, 73' Charles (cpfinder@atcon.com)

Right Church, wrong pew..it was on his Greatest Hits LP

SHE WAS ONLY SEVENTEEN (He Was One Year More)
Recorded by Marty Robbins
Writer: Marty Robbins

(Seventeen)
(Wah-ooh-wah)
(And he Was one year more)
(Seventeen)
(Wah-ooh-wah)
(And he, the girl adored.)

(Seventeen)
She was only seventeen and he was one year more
(Seventeen)
She loved him with all her heart and he, the girl adored
But all her friends believed they were too young to know the score
'Cause she was only seventeen and he was one year more

(Seventeen)
Are they old enough to know if love will last for life
(Seventeen)
Isn't he too young to be a husband, her a wife
Well, in the past I bet it's happened more than once before
When someone else was seventeen, another one year more.

Do we have the right to question love that seems so strong
As long as God has no objections there can be no wrong
(Seventeen)
Let us be the first to wish them all the very best
(Seventeen)
Let us hope their love is strong enough to meet the test
'Cause like I say, I bet it's happened more than once before
When someone else was seventeen, another one year more.

(Do we have the right to question love that seems so strong)
(As long as God has no objections there can be no wrong
(Seventeen)
Let us be the first to wish them all the very best
(Seventeen)
Let us hope their love is strong enough to meet the test
'Cause like I say, I bet it's happened more than once before
When someone else was seventeen, another one year more.

(Wah-wah-wah)
(Seventeen)
(Wah-wah-wah)

I'm trying to find out who this song is by. It's kind of an instrumental. There's not many lyrics in it. It really just came out awhile ago. It's either sunshine, or sunchimes. I think, that's the name of the song. Thanks a bunch.

hi Rach,

It really is quicker if you start a new thread to ask for a new song, otherwise requests like yours get overlooked. I suggest you go back to the main thread page, go up to the top left and click on create a new thread, put in your request title then try again.

good luck

Think of Me - you know that I'd be with you if I could...i'd come around to see you once in a while...or if I ever need a reason to smile..and spend the night if you think I should..

It was top 40 in the 70's. Todd Runtgren springs to mind, but I'm not sure.

The name of the song is "Hello, It's Me" and it was done Todd Rundgren. Words available from International Lyrics Server.

The International Lyrics Server is a great place to search for pop lyrics. if all you know is a few words from a song, use their fulltext feature. For country, try Cowpie.
For folk songs, search the world-famous Digital Tradition Folk Song Database right here at the Mudcat Cafe. Just enter a few words in the search box at the upper right corner of this page.
After you've tried all that, then try posting your requests for folk songs here in the forum. Make sure you give a title to your request thread that identifies your song somehow. Threads titled "trying to find this song" just tend to irritate people. For other songs, you'll get best results if you post a request in the alt.music.lyrics newsgroup.

The Coasters in the late 50's did a song about TV heroes with the chorus:

And then along came Jones,
Tall thin Jones,
Slow walkin' Jones,
Slow talkin' Jones,
Along came longly, lanky Jones.

Each verse played out a little suspenseful tale and ended something like this:

And then he grabbed her. And then?
He tied her up. And then?
He threw on the railroad track. And then?
A train started coming. And then? And then?
Uh,uh

And then along came Jones (etc.)....

I'll do a little computer search and see what I find. I'll also transfer this to a new thread.

I've been looking for this song for 11 years! Its a strong throaty sorta country song by a female artist. Its a song about reflecting back over her relationship and summing it up should it ever end. The refrain sums it up as a whole lot of sunshine and "just a little bit of rain". I would love to find this song as it helped me through some very rough times keeping my focus on the positives (although sometimes hare to find). Thanks in advance for any help you can be. I found the song lyrics I was looking for, through the entry by Joe Offer. I guess The Mudcat can take credit, rather indirectly. The sample words I quoted were close but not exact. Cowpie found a song by Hank Williams titled:- "WEDDING BELLS" which is it.

If Lonely Girl wasn't a Smokey Robinson song, it was by someone who sounds just like him.

"Hey there Lonely Girl, Lonely Girl

Let me fix your broken heart like glue

Pretty sure its Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

Scroll up the thread and read Alison's message of June 10 and see how it was ignored.
Something like a virus here; new people giving their e-mail addresses, resurrecting old overly-general threads from the archives and posting fresh requests on them. This one is the third I've seen this week. Probably a subversive campaign to get Mudcat to show further threadequette instructions on screen. Has anyone here e-mailed "bfleming"?

I'm sorry, I saw "looking for a song" and went in trying to help. I see the folly of my ways and will try in the future to refrain from opening threads with no clue as to what is being sought. Is there not some way the powers that be can edit out such threads? A warning could be posted that all threads without a title or keywords in the thread will be deleted.

Take it easy guys & gals.

What happens is, that a newbie sees this thread title and quite logically thinks that this is the tread to use when looking for a song. So they just go straight to the end of the thread without reading all the messages which don't interest them.

It's not until AFTER they get hooked, or smitten with the Mudcat disease, that they read every message in every thread.

So, Welcome Aboard! Bfemming, we're glad to have you. But, you will get quicker results if you start a new thread and include the name of the song in the thread title.

Bert.

Re; the Brazilian coke. Probably need an opener, as they don't have twist-off technology in Brazil yet. Course after the first bottle, you could probably just use yer teeth.

Bert, but the incredible thing is that Bfleming and a couple of others this week pulled threads of this nature out of the archives. This thread was dormant from Nov 1998 until March this year. And I wasn't so amazed that Bfleming hadn't heeded the notice of June 10, but neither did Le Ann on Jun 11. I refer you also to Bill's advice/complaint of July 18 and another song request posted on 20 July!

Hi BFleming, welcome aboard and thanks for replying to the posts above. I'm afraid that the song you are asking for is about 100 years too young for me to know it, but I'm sure that someone here will be avle to point you to a source. The International Lyric server used to be the place but I understand it has been shut down by the Vatican or someone.

In return would you be able to let us in on the details of how you found this thread? I've tried experimenting with various search engines but so far only found the Mudcat home page, and that usually given under a "Folk and Blues" heading (which is correct). As you may have gathered several ancient and generic threads have been resurrected recently and we are all puzzled as to how they have been found.

Threads: Messages to this discussion group are stored in a realtional database using a unique "thread" identifier as primary key. This has numerous advantages over the storage format used by "newsgroups"; including the ability to add to an existing thread but change the heading, view all posts to a given thread at once, fully invert the file to make them searchable by word, etc. etc. The term Thread refers to the effect of all messages being strung together. Hope that helps.

Response to Pete M. It was a challenge but I retraced my web site tracks and I think this is what I did- Lycospro.lycos.com from there entered"where can I find lyrics" and on page 10 of sites found the site Trying To Find This Song was listed and I clicked it up- So, naturally the next thing I did was submitted the song and that was it. Hope this helps, but the "thread" is basically listed as a site to retrieve.

Appreciated your help.

Thanks for the information, I must admit I've never got beyond about parge 3 of a search engine result before getting bored, so I admire your tenacity. Bfleming,

Thanks for letting us know how you found our site and in particular, the thread on "find this song." It is helpful for me to know how these things happen. We are a site for folk music and blues. And as I much as I love and admire Gamble and Huff's song writing, it is neither folk nor blues.

In exchange for your help, here are the lyrics you requested originally. Here is a link to a soundwave file of the song (with lyrics attached).

Enjoy the music, even if it ain't folk or blues.

ME AND MRS JONES
Written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert
A #1 hit for Billy Paul in 1972 (released September 1972)

Me and Mrs. Jones, we got a thing going on,
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong to let it cool down now.
We meet ev'ry day at the same cafe,
Six-thirty I know she'll be there,
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the jukebox plays our favorite song.
Me and Mrs., Mrs. Jones,

Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones
We got a thing going on,
We both know that it's wrong,
But it's much too strong to let it cool down now.
We gotta be extra careful that we don't build our hopes too high
Cause she's got her own obligations and so do I.

Me, me and Mrs., Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones
We got a thing going on,
We both know that it's wrong,
But it's much too strong to let it cool down now.
Well, it's time for us to be leaving,
it hurts so much, it hurts so much inside,
Now she'll go her way and I'll go mine,
But tomorrow we'll meet the same place, the same time.

Me and Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones. ...
