I haven't heard the acoustic Jagger version but the chords below are right for the 'Stones thingy. (You could try B7 instead of B major).

Can't remember the words properly but you'll probably get them off a Stones' website.

Em B
I see a red door and I want it painted black
Em B
No colours anymore, I want them to turn black
Em D G D Em
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
Em D G D Em B
I have to turn my head, until the darkness goes

(Em)I(D)see the(G)girls walk (D) by dressed (Em)in their summer clothes
(Em)I(D)have to (G)turn my (D)head, (Em)until the darkness(B)goes.

Paint It Black appears on the instrumental cd "Under The Influence" by Chris Proctor, the fingerstyle player who's known for his work for Taylor guitars. He strings it together with California Dreamin' and Runaway.

A worthy listen.

Peace, Mooh.

Actually, I believe there's one chord missing in that progression, which you can get by without.

Try:
(Em)I see a red door and I (B7)want it painted black
(Em)No colours anymore I (B7)want them to turn black
(Em)I (D)see the(G)girls walk (D)by dressed (A)in their summer (B7)clothes
(Em)I (D)have to (G)turn my (D)head, un-(A)til the darkness(B7)goes

In truth, I came across this thread because I'm looking for a possible correction for one of the verses.

The line "No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue" just makes no damn sense at all. I figure it HAS to be a mondegreen; yet every source I've tried on the 'net has it that way. Anybody got any ideas or info?

PS: Maybe it's not strictly folk, but my band has the coolest possible gig coming up, and Paint It Black is the one request we have. The gig: we're performing at a Goth wedding ON Halloween!

No takers; huh?

I did just find a "misunderstood lyric" site that suggests the line should be "No more can my grief sink or turn a deeper blue".

That, at least, makes some sense to me, and probably what I'll sing, barring other input.

no mondegreen there, Jeremiah, that's what Jagger is singing.

does it make sense ?

probably as much sense as many of Dylan's lyrics from the same period ...

check it out Here

...and I always thought it was "no more can my green seagull turn a deeper blue".

McCaw,
Not exactly folk either, but a suggestion for your Goth Halloween wedding, "Clair de Lune", as it's mentioned in the Stephenie Meyer novels so popular today.

Here are the complete lyrics, as found on the internet and checked against the recording by me:

PAINT IT BLACK
Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
As recorded by The Rolling Stones on “Aftermath,” 1966.

I see a red door and I want it painted black—
No colors anymore, I want them to turn black.
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes.
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes.

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black,
With flowers and my love, both never to come back.
I've seen people turn their heads and quickly look away.
Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day.

I look inside myself and see my heart is black.
I see my red door I must have it painted black.
Maybe then, I'll fade away and not have to face the facts.
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black.

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue.
I could not foresee this thing happening to you.
If I look hard enough into the setting sun,
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes.

[Repeat first verse]

I wanna see it painted,
Painted black,
Black as night,
Black as coal.
I wanna see the sun
Blotted out from the sky.
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted,
Painted black, yeah.

There are only two Rolling Stones' songs that I like, Paint It Black, and Ruby Tuesday.

I like Paint It Black because of the unusual rhythm.

It almost has a Middle Eastern vibe, which is something I noticed in some of Led Zeppelin's songs, especially after seeing the MTV show, Led Zeppelin Unledded: No Quarter where some of the videos were taken in a Middle Eastern country.

I thought he was singing about a girl with "one tit painted black".
