BS: Gift Quest - Can you help?

I am actually trying to find a specific gift for Rog, this year, one which will be a suprise because I know he actually wants it and it won't be clothes. It is kind of unusual and I am not having any luck, except for these two at eBay. Now, I am watching them, but they end so close to Christmas, I don't think they'd be here in time, if I win the bid, SO...I've been looking all day on the Internet and had no luck. (In case the link doesn't work, they are Desert Canvas Water bags. People who travelled across the deserts of the West, up through the 60's that I remember, would soak the canvas bag in water, then fill it, tie it to their front bumper for those long journeys. The evaporation kept the water cool, for thirsty travellers or an overheated car.)

I found one company in San Francisco, propcity, which rents them, but will not sell them. The only place they could recommend, G&M's in San Francisco does not have any, either. No, do my local Army surplus or RV stores, in fact the old fellah at the RV parts place laughed and told me the two on eBay may be the only ones "left in captivity!" *BG*

Anyway, do any of you know is these are still available, ANYWHERE? I'd really love to surprise him with this.

Thanks a bunch!

kat

Maybe, I have to call and speak with "Paul" in the morning. She wasn't sure if it was exactly like the ones I want with the cork and all. I'll call the other place, too, but I'll still owe ya! I did a google on every combo I could think of! Thanks, darlin'!

Here's another one on Ebay, ending in a couple hours. I just put 'Water bag' in the search. Got a lot of junk listings but a few good ones as well.

Just wanted to tell how Mudcat came through, AGAIN! Thanks to Marian and her husband, Denny, I was able to give Rog an "antique" Desert Canvas Water Bag, in time for Christmas!

Denny is an antique dealer and if any of you are interested you can find his stuff at ebay under "antique denny."

Thanks, Marian and Denny!

Kat I have one hanging in the basement that I used on the thrashing crew in the 1930s and early 1940s and it is just as good as it was when it was brand new.To keep them in new condition you either keep them filled with water or when you store them you have to be sure they are completely dry.Iwon't part with it though it has to many memories. In that era all hardware stores carried them Louie

Ah, Louie! Don't ya know I'd give a pretty penney for yours! Wow! My dad always had one, too and his granddad was the first one to have a thrashing machine in Western Colorado! Seems you two have a lot in common!

Thanks,

kat

Years ago I gave my dad one of them. He was so impressed- he'd had them on the farms when he was young. He used the one I got him for years, bumping over the stubble fields day after day. Until one evening at the end of the day, when it was no longer hanging on his truck side mirror. He scoured over his day's journeys but never found it.

It was the best gift I ever gave him.

Allen C we thrashed all kinds of grain such as wheat oats barley rye etc and the day started at 4 AM and ended at around 10 PM and the rate of pay was $1:00 a day plus $1:50 a day for team and bundle wagon and of course they fed you two meals. Louie Roy
