20 Dec 01 - 11:30 PM (#614024) Subject: Lyr Add: MINUIT, CHRÉTIENS / O HOLY NIGHT From: Mark Cohen This one I remember from my 10th grade French class. Now don't ask me what a Jewish kid from Philly is doing singing this song...but I sang it at our office Christmas party last week! (If somebody could put the accents in, I'd appreciate it...haven't mastered that trick yet. I'm also not as certain of the spelling as I am of the pronunciation.) MINUIT, CHRÉTIENS

I copied the Japanese lyrics to Silent Night from another thread, but it helps to be able to hear them, too, so I know how they fit with the music. 26 Dec 01 - 02:26 PM (#616582) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Silent Night (en Francais) From: GUEST,Sonja Actually, I think the "Ou" in the first verse and the "ou" in the second verse should have an "accent gràve" over the "O" (or is it over the "u"?). (It's "where," not "or.") Sonja |

27 Dec 01 - 03:15 AM (#616903) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Silent Night (en Francais) From: Genie Oops! Dunno how it happened, but in cutting and pasting from various sources, the umlaut 'jumped' from the "ö" in "Nöel" to the "e." Pretty darned sure it's "Nöel," not "Noël." (If there's a Joe clone who can double check that and fix it in the post above, I'd appreciate it.) Genie |

27 Dec 01 - 04:10 AM (#616909) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Silent Night (en Francais) From: Mark Cohen Actually, it is over the "e"! In French, the "umlaut" (I don't know the French term) indicates that the second vowel in what would otherwise be a diphthong is pronounced separately. My automatic in-brain proofreader caught a few more missing accents, but I don't know how to make them appear on the screen. jusqu'a - a grave effacer - e aigu tache - a circonflexe deliverance - premier e aigu notre - o circonflexe Oh, that's enough, I'm tired! Great work, Genie, and thanks for adding the extra verses! Aloha, Mark |

29 Dec 01 - 11:55 PM (#618405) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Silent Night (en Francais) From: Genie Mark, Shortly after posting those lyrics I realized I've had that "¨" thing backwards for several months now! Thanks for correcting my post, as well as for explaining the general rule (so I won't forget next time). In Navigator, at least the Mac version, the acute accent is made by holding down the "option" key while hitting the "e" and then hitting the key for the vowel you want. The circumflex is "option+"i"then the vowel in question. The umlaut is "option +"u" + the vowel in quetion. I foget how to do the grave accent, so I just open MS Word and go to "insert symbol" under the "insert" menu and copy the letter-cum-symbol I want. The capital "Á" (grave accent) is made by holding down the shift key+option+"A." Here are some of the corrections you made (but didn't have the diacritical marks for): jusqu' à Génie |
