In my sweet little Alice blue gown, When I first wander'd down into town I was both proud and shy, As i felt ev'ry eye, But in ev'ry shop window I'd primp, passing by Then in a manner of fashion i'd frown And the world seemed to smile all around, Till it wilted I wore it, I'll always adore it, My sweet little Alice blue gown.

ALICE BLUE GOWN
Words by Joseph McCarthy. Music by Harry Tierney.
Copyright Leo Feist, Inc. 1919

1. I once had a gown; it was almost new.
Oh, the daintiest thing, it was sweet Alice Blue.
With little forget-me-nots placed here and there,
When I had it on, I walked on the air,
And it wore, and it wore, and it wore,
Till it went and it wasn't no more

CHORUS: In my sweet little Alice Blue gown,
When I first wandered down into town,
I was both proud and shy, as I felt ev'ry eye,
But in ev'ry shop window I'd primp, passing by.
Then in manner of fashion I'd frown,
And the world seemed to smile all around.
Till it wilted I wore it. I'll always adore it,
My sweet little Alice Blue gown.

2. The little silkworms that made silk for that gown,
Just made that much silk, and then crawled in the ground,
For there never was anything like it before,
And I don't dare to hope there will be any more.
But it's gone 'cause it just had to be;
Still it wears in my memory.

okay - I'm confused - both copies of the spring '02 DT (dos and windows) tell me this has no tune - but we already have the tune for the chorus in the 0ct '99 Dt.

Anyway - will be sending in the whole shebang.

Hi - I put crosslinks above to our other thread (click) on the song. Here's what David Ewen says in American Popular songs: from the Revolutionary War to the Present
In My Sweet Little Alice Blue Gown, words by Joseph McCarthy, music by Harry Tierney (Introduced by Adele Rowland in the musical Irene (1919). The song took cognizance of the fact that the color of light blue had come into vogue in 1919 through the wardrobe then favored so greatly by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt. The song went on to become one of America's most celebrated waltzes. In the motion- picture adaptation of the musical (RKO, 1940), it was first danced to by Anna Neagle and Ray Milland, and later sung by Anna Neagle.
Seems like a credible story.

I have a 1920's picture of Alice Blue Gown, formerly owned by my mother's cousin. It is not a portrait of Alice Roosevelt, rather a chocolate box or calendar picture & one of my treasures. My faulty memory thought Alice had blue eyes, but she was certainly associated with this shade of blue.

My Alice is a pretty young lady with her blond hair bunched over her ears, wearing a light blue (Alice Blue) dress with a wide gathered skirt and a shawl with blue flowers on a lemony bckground. The picture would have been painted in the early 20's, before women became sophisticated women of the world - before short hair & short skimpy dresses

Lynette, what makes you sure the woman is your grandmother? Alice Blue Gown was a common phrase & could have been used on many occasions.

On the front it says "PRINTED IN THE USA", "ALICE BLUE GOWN" and "copyright K. CO. INC, BENDIX PAPER COMPANY, NY". The company that framed it stuck a label on the back saying it was No. 8058, Title - Alice Blue Gown & Artist - (left blank) & it cost 18/3. I assume it was a mass produced print.

Thanks for your answer Sandra. My sister has a lid of a chocolate box with the picture on given to her by our grandmother. she was born in 1900 and the picture was done when she was in her teens. It was commissioned by the paper company to advertise their stationary. we have several other photos taken when she was sitting for artists. one picture has been recently re-released as a print, now called Her Favourite. It was done when she was about 7 and she is in a garden holding a rabbit. This was painted by Frederick Samuel Beaumont. Her name was Alice. We are wondering if there are any other pictures of her that we have not seen. Lynette.

Lynette, I'll check with a photographer friend to see it he could get a photo of it as it is under glass & I wouldn't want to disturb the back to remove it for photocopying/photgraphing.

If he can get a good picture we could e-mail it or post you a print.

If you join up - see details under membership above - we can correspond (via the little blue PM next to each name, in case you don't know).

In 1964, I went on the American University Washington Semester Program. We had class interviews with different folks. One day we went to see Majority Leader Russell Long in his office and Alice was there. She was a very lively person. Sen. Long mainly talked about her. Quite a character. I hope that she is still leading the gossip brigade in Heaven.

Hello - I also have a framed picture as described by Sandra. I would also say it was formerly a chocolate box or calendar picture but it is very pretty and always reminds me of my childhood as it hung in the hall of my parents home.

Does anybody know of its origin.

Can't help with the historical info, but this song bring back childhood memories, my mother used to sing it to me and it always made me cry. Maybe it was her smoker's baritone, maybe it was the bit where it got worn & torn and she couldn't wear it any more. At that stage we weren't well off and there was still wartime rationing and I knew clothes getting worn out was a problem. Now, of course, grown men cry when I sing...anything.

Hi, My mom's name is Alice. She's 76. When I was a little girl, she told me her favorite song was _Alice Blue Gown_. Further, her favorite color was and is Alice blue. I never did know exactly what shade of blue that is. I'm doing a little research on the Internet now. She loves any blue, though.

We started a Yahoo! Group in her honor, and I'd like to know if you guys mind if I copy this thread to the "Files" page of our group's Website. I find it very informative and interesting. I'd also like to place a link to Mudcat Cafe in our "Links" page.

Please do feel free to check out our group's Website:

Thanks very much for your consideration.

This seems to have been a favourite with western swing groups. It was recorded by Milton Brown & His Brownies (1936), Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers (1939) and Light Crust Doughboys (1940). The earliest recording was by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (1920).

I am thrilled to find this site tonight. May I tell you a short story of my "Alice Blue Gown"? When I was small, 6 or so, my Auntie Mid came from California by train to visit us country kids in S.C. She lived in Hollywood, was musical, she danced, acted, commercials, owned dress shops, went to acting school in the 20's. She was our "movie star" and we loved her so. She taught my sister and me the song, "Alice Blue Gown". It was wonderful, I remembered all the words, I remember standing in front or our fireplace, Auntie Mid playing the piano and us singing the lovely little song. I an 58 now and looking back on special memories, this is a sweet one. Thank You.

Welcome aboard Carolyn.

When I was 9 my Dad remarried and I acquired a step sister. She was 5 at the time and one of the songs she sang us was Alice Blue Gown.

I think that one of the reasons Dad chose Ivy as our new Mum was that her 5 year old daughter Jackie had a lovely voice.

It was a good choice.

In the '50's, in Cincinnati Ohio, my mother and grandmother used to decorate parties, especially fund-raising galas. My favorite of my mother's creations was the "Orchid Ball". I was about 11 and pretty tiny, and was given large bunches of orchid-colored helium ballons to hold while people attached them to tables (helium had recently returned to retail use after the end of the Korean war). I almost left the ground.

My favorite of my grandmother's was the "Alice Blue Gown Ball" - everything in that wonderful silvery blue. It's the first time I ever saw twinkle lights. Both balls were held in the spectacular, art deco Netherland Plaza Hotel, and its balcony.

The preparations for these balls were done with Walter, an antique dealer, who could come up with the most amazing stuff (life-sized plaster swans, for example). In his funky old shop he kept a parrot that HATED my mother for some unknown reason and would always be trying to bite her.

Great memories!
Linda

In the late nineteen sixties, a bunch of Liverpool University students, including me, would go to a pub near Sefton Park in search of the true Scouse culture.
This was a singing pub- like a singaround for ordinary folk, as opposed to Folkies. So they sang whatever took their fancy, Vera Lynn, Music Hall songs, Sea Shanties etc.etc.
One of the star turns was a lady in her sixties then, I think her name was Lil, who sang a racy parody of Alice Blue Gown called "That Sweet Little Nightie of Mine" - It was about a bride on her wedding night- get the idea?
Cheers

Correction:- ever since I posted that, the song has been playing in my head. It was "That Little Pink Nightie of Mine"
It started:-
That Little Pink Nightie of Mine
I wore it the very first time...

it got a bit Parental Advisory after that.

and the last two lines went

I wore it, he tore it,
I'll always adore it
That Little Pink Nightie of Mine.

I heard it two or three times, over forty years ago- so I doubt whether any more will come to mind.

I strongly suspect that the pub by the top of Upper Parlie was the most authentic folk club I've ever been to.
Cheers
Dave

The Bill Clinton parody:

In her sweet Alice Blue Gown
that she wore when she went into town
she was silly and shy
'till I unzipped my fly

And when she adored it, I thought I would die
well, she made it go up and go down
'till it nearly touched the ground

The more that I shoved it
the more that she loved it
and I came on her Alice Blue Gown

You can see the sheet music at The Archive of Popular American Music. It only has one verse and one chorus, which raises the question: where did the second verse in the DT come from, if not from the sheet music?

It's the best little ribbon so far,
I've got one on my chest and one on my vest,
