I work in the house of 5 people with Learning Difficulties so I still get to do most of the usual Christmas stuff. I last had a fortnight off over Christmas /New Year in 1985 - I don't think I'd know what to do with all that free time anymore. Hope you still enjoy it ! H |

One would be working on Christmas and having a life-threatening asthma attack and winding up in the hospital (asthma's been well under control for years now, thank heavens). In my position as a caregiver for my mom, Christmas Day is not unlike any other day - or as my friend, David C. puts it so well, "It's just another day that ends in "Y". There are other loved ones with whom I would also like to be spending this day, and knowing that might make the day a rather long one. But it turns out that I am only working a half day today after all. My brother will be visiting briefly - thus affording me an opportunity to be elsewhere. Here's a tip of the hat and best wishes for all of you, but a special empathy for those of you who fall into the category of "caregivers". |

One of the other boats got hung up on some rocks; the water level is down due to the drought we've been having. The spectators were no trouble, and no one cursed at me because they arrived late and couldn't get a good parking spot, which is unusual. Earlier in the day, I drove over to Pennsylvania (either Bucks or Northampton County) and had to wait for a garbage truck to get off the road. What evil local government makes its garbage collectors work on Christmas? Anyway, I hope you all had a good Christmas. |

I'm booking my leave today when I get in, for Christmas 2002, I'm sick of being the only volunteer in. And it's probably the same evil govnerment that allows tax payers to use Dec 31st as an end of accounting period, making the two weeks we have fewest staff, the two busiest weeks of the year! When I worked in Local Government (i.e., local council) there were significant bonuses/time off allowances for working over Christmas.... not so any more. I remember getting time and a half plus a day off in lieu for working during Christmas week.... now they don't even get that. There are only 3 public holidays over Christmas so they don't want to pay the extra and don't see why people should need to take a week. Usual "service needs" apply, like having no more than 2 people off in one section at any given time. My office minimum is 2, and that's what we've got until 4th Jan, me and one other. LTS |

This year I did a hospital job in the morning (a last minute booking), a private party at 3, and a Klezmer job at 7. I would rather spend the day with my wife, it's her birthday/ Christmas family getogether, but I have to work when a job comes in. I really appreciate the dedication of those who "man their stations" at times when they should be home but are needed by their communities. So thanks for working Tuesday. |

One very sick 2-month-old in the morning and one very sick newborn at 3AM on the 26th....otherwise not much to do but put an icebag on the knee I hurt the day before while trying to keep healthy by running! Both babies are safely ensconced in the Children's hospital in Honolulu (courtesy of the air ambulance and transport team who were also working on Christmas), and most likely will do OK. They had us on standby for Y2K, but nobody rioted. Until they boot me out of detectives I get to choose my days off unless we get hit with a meth lab. (I hate meth labs) Last New Years Eve I got called out for a meth lab, but we finished it before the festivities started. I hope they don't find one this New Year's Day, because I seriously don't want to miss the Ducks playing the Buffaloes. |
