New Album - Tom Lewis 'Poles Apart'

I tried this before, but I didn't do it right. So....

Tom Lewis, singer of the sea, has recently come out with a new album, a collaboration with a group of Polish musicians and singers, collectively known as Perly I Lotry Shanghaju, hence the name 'Poles Apart'.

The harmonies are wonderful, and as usual Tom's strength, his deep and full voice, is showcased.

So if you are interested, his and the Poles' website have clips to listen to, and also ordering info.

Clinton,

Davilmaster introduced a thread about Tom Lewis's new album, not about Tom himself. I am certainly familiar with Tom Lewis. I'm sure there are many others who are as well. However, I have not heard his new album, so I cannot discuss it.

I would assume this must be a very new CD because I have not heard it on any of the folk music radio programs I listen to.

You yourself did not add to the discussion other than to berate others for not discussing something that hey have also probably not heard.

Jerry

I actually got my CD on Christmas eve....
Probably my best birthday present....

Been a big fan of Tom since '92, I think that was the first time I heard him. Being in the Canadian Navy, it was hard not to hear Tom. Almost every ship probably had a copy of 'Surfacing', and 'Last Shanty' became a hymn, if you will, to us sailors.

Since then, had the chance to meet him a few times, and listen to some great songs and swap stories.

Jerry, My original msg did its job, as you saw it, and I hope you get a chance to get a CD. Tom knows nothing of my msg, and I did it, to not only help sell my friends' album, but to raise awareness to the (i'm sure) minority of 'catters that have never heard Tom.

Knowing Clinton as I do, he really wasn't berating, but saying something to ensure the thread stayed refreshed.

Hope you guys get a chance to hear it.

Peace, Steve

I recall playing the ward room at the HMCS Hunter one night... All the lads were asking for "The Last Shanty" and I had to admit that I didn't know the song at all...

"Well then", said the guy who hired me, "You ain't gettin' out of here till ya learn it!"

A few pints and a few shots later, I stepped up and gave them probably the worst version they had ever heard... They very nearly carried me around on their shoulders... And as DMaster (Steve) will tell ya, the ward room has a really LOW ceiling!!!

I also came VERY close to opening for Tom one night at the Junior Mess.. maybe Steve will tell the tale...

Suffice to say, I've been almost as hooked on Tom as Steve is ever since!

ugh......that brings back memories..... well, if were telling stories, I'll wait till everyone gets a pint in their hands.......................................................................

Get it? Got it? Good!

I'd never seen Tom live, and after checking his website, found he would be doing Ontario in early 2000. After asking the Windsor Folk Club to promote the concert in their series, (and unfortunately already booked up) I went and promoted Tom myself.

Having a venue, (Junior Ranks Mess in HMCS Hunter, Naval Reserve Unit in Windsor - I was the Bar Manager) I went about the task of trying to put together a concert. With no prior experience or knowledge.

To make sure people got their monies worth, I asked Clinton to open the show, and the understanding that he would work for about a half hour, then Tom would go up. I wrote on the tickets 8 p.m. Clinton was to start at 8:30, tom at 9.

Well, the people who did actually show up, didn't start coming till near 9 oclock to begin with. Clinton woulda basically played to no one, and to top it off, someone in the folk community was getting married that day. And Clinton and my sound guy from the folk club, (who generously offered their gear and time, thank you, thank you, thank you) both had to miss a good chunk of the reception.

Well if you've read this far, I'm sure you're wondering how the concert went. Tom put on one hell of a show. Especially if it was for only 20 people or so. Not really knowing how to promote a concert was my only downfall. But I learnt. And would probably do it again.

I mean, it was worth all of it, just to see Tom live. So thats my story. Hope ya enjoyed.

Ya know Steve... I've been looking at this cd case... and I think there's a slight error somewhere...

I know the band that backs Tom up is called "Poles Apart", but I think the title of the album is "On, My, Ocean"...

Which is a REALLY cool title!

I've had the pleasure to sing with Tom Lewis and even add my voice to a live recording (Mixed Cargo). As many times as I've heard him, he still amazes me. Never, ever miss a chance to go see him. And, if you're reading this Tom, are you going to be at the Port Townsend Wood Boat Fest this year?

The Yorkshire Tornado and I were two of the six or eight paying customers that night at the HMCS Hunter and I can vouch for the fact that Tom puts on one helluva show. I don't have any of his albums, but I certainly put him high on my I'll-go-anytime-he's-in-town list.

Actually, Clinton, the name of the band from Poland is 'Perly I Lotry Shanghaju' which translates into 'Pearls and Waters of Shanghai"

Ghost around their website, my friend

I saw Tom, with Pint and Dale, at Fleetwood some years ago. They were brilliant. I would like to see Tom on his own as well but never had the pleasure.

Nice to see there is still the big shanty tradition in Poland - I remember talking to Johny Collins some years ago and he told me how good it was then. Stan Hugill had become so venerated that he was being referred to as Saint Stanislaw!!!

I'll keep my eyes (and ears) open for the new album. Thanks Steve.

Cheers

Your welcome Dave.

Ya know, I've been kicking myself in the arse since the summer. Tom played at the Tall Ships Fest in Bay City, Michigan, (Supposed fake home of the Bay City Rollers!) and got to sit with Tom after his show over a couple pints, and he told me to come back Sunday night, cause Johnny Collins was coming in to play. Never did get to make it. I will have to ignore that work thing from now on!

Of course Dave, if you'd like a copy of Tom's stuff, call him yourself, at 1-800-seadog-1. Just remember that Tom does live in the Pacific Time Zone, which means as I write this msg, its 7:50 in the morning there.

Cheers, Steve

Oh yeah, Dave, just kinda wonderin where you are?

I have been itching at the fact that I would like to bring Tom back to Windsor, next time he rolls thorough this area.

I didn't do completely right the first time, and want a chance to redeem myself, If just for my own personal satisfaction of a job well done.

I will try to keep you in mind.

Cheers, Steve

Tom's new release is as splendid as the man himself. I am honored to call him friend and urge anyone who has yet to enjoy his music to get moving and get out to see him in concert whenever you can . Murrey
