Sadly the death has been announced of the actor Sir Nigel Hawthorne age 72. He died at his home in Ware, Hertfordshire. Sir Nigel who was born in Coventry moved to South Africa as a child with his parents. He made his stage debut there in 1950 in "The Shop at Sly Corner.". Coming back to Great Britain in 1951, he had a variety of roles in such productions as "Julius Caesar" (1972); "The Magistrate" (1986) and "Hapgood" (1989). He had his Broadway debut in 1974 in "As You Like It." He will be best remembered for his marvellous performances on television as Sir Humphrey Appleby in "Yes Minister" and "Yes Prime Minister." The film version of "The Madness of King George" (1994) earned him an Academy Award Nomination. He had been having chemotherapy for cancer for some time. Sadly missed and a fond farewell to a great actor and a true trouper. Give our regards to Jim Hacker (Paul Eddington) in that great theatre in the sky on this sad Boxing Day.

Tragic loss.....a fine actor in all forms of acting. But he will be always and for many remembered for "Yes, Minister," on eof the funniest series ever produced.

RIP, Sir Nigel; it's sad to see this generation of great British actors passing away one by one, isn't it? We missed an opportunity to see him in "King Lear" at the Barbican a couple years ago, and now will sadly not have the chance again.

I'd hoped this year would end without further bad news, and this is a sad loss indeed! RIP Nigel Hawthorne and all the other valued and appreciated people who've died this year.

Here is the biography of Nigel Hawthorne at the Internet Movie Database.

IMDb lists 66 credits for him: 28 TV and 38 films, starting with an uncredited appearance as a "Boer sentry" in "Young Winston" in 1972. I will remember him mainly for "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister," which were shown on public TV here in the US, and for "The Madness of King George." Yes, he will be missed.

I think that after I became aware of him through the "Minister" series, I always noticed him popping up in things and he always seemed to do such a great job and be having a wonderful time of it. If you haven't seen his Malvolio, it's absolutely great. And we just saw "Claus" where he turned in another great performance. I also remember seeing him in the quite forgettable Clint Eastwood vehicle, "Firefox." Once again though, his portrayal of the character, even in a stinker loke this one, was well done and very touching. Consummate actor.

In his performances, his comic timing was always immaculate.

Doubtless the "Yes Minister" & "Yes Prime Minister" series will never be surpassed as a study of irony.

I hope the BBC will re-broadcast these classics as a tribute in due course.

I can't be the only one who has seen "Mapp and Lucia". As Lucia's gay friend (I forget the character's name), he was great, as usual.
