His great news, for me at any rate, was, that his Autobiography is soon to hit the bookshops. He said that the cover and some notes are on his web site already, anyone seen it ? Sorry, I can't do the "blue Clicky Thing" (ask Bernard ? again?). It promises to be quite a read as Liam has had an amazing career since leaving Carrick-on-Suir, in Tipperary some time back in the 50's. There are also a couple of other pix from the ceremony, including one with his former colleague Dr. Tommy Makem who received the same well-deserved recognition. Come a long way since they last shook hands. If this is all old news, or non-news, to Mudcat regulars, please forgive this inexpert but well-meaning Guest. Annyway, good thing reports of Liam's death were greatly exaggerated back in March of '00: he'd have missed his appointment in the Groves of Academe. The Mountain of Women: there are two sources for the name. The view of the mountain resembles a reclining lady of mountainous proportions. It also alludes to the legend of Fionn MacCool's task set for the ladies of Ireland to select a wife. He had a race to the top of the mountain and there were a lot of participants. It was fixed, of course, by the 'little people' so that the right girl won. naturally.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but "Mr. Happy" is U.S. slang for a vibrator of a particular configuration. Now, you REALLY have me curious as to where this line is headed. Liam Clancy put out an earlier book, which I read long ago, depicting his early years, Catholic influences, etc., and what lead to his eventual teaming with his brothers and Tommy Maken in Greenwich Village, NY in the mid-1950's. A good read and full of insights. I am anxiously awaiting a chance at this new "mountainous" tome. |
