BS: Happy New Year 2002 - Oz first again!

Well, I thought someone else would beat me to it. It's now 11.02 am on New Year's Day, here in east coast Oz, so the Oz-tralians beat the rest of you to the New Year line again. Funny how that happens every year. (I'm waiting for a kiwi to have a go at me now, telling me that they got to the line before us.) ;->

Anyway, Happy New Year to all of my Mudcat friends. One of my New Year's resolutions is to continue coming here and communing with one of the nicest communities I know.

[sounds of champagne corks popping, annoying horns tooting, people singing Auld Lang Syne, fireworks *not* going off because of Oz bushfires and total fire ban, etc etc]

Happy New Year, Helen. ABC showed fireworks in Sydney and said they'd lifted the ban just for those, this one night? Is that right?

It is ten minutes until midnight, here, in Wyoming, still in old 2001....just a bit more and we'll be there, though!

Thanks,

kat

Gareth,

I think the international dateline between yesterday and today occurs somewhere close to New Zealand. Don't feel like looking it up right now, but I think I learned that last year from some of the kiwi-cats.

Okay, Roger, make a song and dance about the fact that I'm late (grin). I did say it was 11 am and that I thought other Oz-cats would have beaten me to it, but maybe they were still asleep.

Getting too old for this staying up into the wee hours malarkey. Have to act my age, soon. Well sometime in the next few decades. Maybe.

G'day Roger & Helen,

Obviously, the Kiwis have missed this thread ... most assuredly, New Year happened first in New Zealand ... 2 hours before east coast Australia. If it was based on appearance of the sun, it would be Tonga first - although Tonga (and Fiji) are in the same time zone as New Zealand - the first time zone west of the International Date Line, Tonga is way east, in a kink that keeps them in the same day as Fiji and New Zealand, instead of yesterday ... with Western Samoa!

Lots of interesting politics in that Date Line ... more than I am going to type in this thread!

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Graham -

I just sent you a PM inquiring about your expression "pissed as a newt". I first ran across it years ago in Maine when some fishermen were singing about their drinking exploits: "On our toots we're pissed as newts!" Any public comment?
