BS: What Did You Do on New Year's Day?

From: Ebbie

On New Year's Eve, I had about 15 people in and we made music up to and past midnight- great way to spend the time. Even taped the whole evening to give out as gifts.

New Year's Day dawned silvery and clear. I went with a dear friend 'out the road' to the Shrine of St. Therese and stood in the crystal cold for an hour as we watched numerous humpback whales and literally TONS of sea lions below and beyond us.

Did you know that whales also 'sing' above water? I had never heard such a sound except on underwater recordings but it was unmistakeably the whales who moaned and keened the haunting tones.

Something to paste in my 'Memory Keeper' book.

Ebbie

Partied at friends till 4.30; slept a bit; joined the rest of the Shakespeare Morris Men at noon, danced at 12.30, performed the mummers play at 1.30, then sang till 4.30 and came home. Oh yes, I drank a bit, too!

Lucky BOB... The poor ol' bobert drove into Maryland for the annual New Years open house with the bobert's brother in law, Stuart, who spends half of his living life listening to Rush Limbaugh and the other half reciting Rush Limbaugh. Fun, right? Wrong. But the ferry ride over the Potomac at Whites Ferry made it worth it because the moon was full and shining down the river on the return trip and our car was the only car on the ferry that time of night.... But ol bobert is real glad to only have to do this once a year.... fir sure.

Played Golf. A group of us have done this every New Year's Day for at least 15 years. Yesterday was nice, very little snow on the course and the weather was fairly nice.

I'm so glad you asked. I had a black gospel/reggae/rhythm and blues and rock and roll New Year's Day. The birthday of the wife of the tenor in my gospel quartet was on New Year's Day, and my tenor, Derrick arranged a surprise birthday party for her. Her family, which lives in Florida, came up here to Connecticut, as part of the surprise. When my wife and I got to the party, Derrick's friends from his reggae band were setting up their instruments and a sound system. Then, Derrick got up and played electric guitar, with his son on drums, and two other members of the reggae band on electric bass and keyboards. They rocked the place for about a half an hour, and then the rest of our gospel quartet came up and sang harmonies while Derrick sang the lead on Earth Angel. Then it was the Gospel Messengers turn, with me on guitar. I'd never heard black gospel accompanied by a reggae band, but we really got rolling. I've never played with a drummer, keyboards and electric bass behind me, but we had a power we've never had on our own. Definitely not Appalachian folk music. There was a little bit of Rolling Stones, and a lot of gospel.

My only regret was that my friend Ian wasn't there, playing second bass. What a way to welcome in the New Year!

Ebbie: I went to the Shrine of St Therese and stayed a couple of hours last September. Wonderful place. HUGE run going up that tiny creek. (Worked on New Year's Day.)

I built a new bathroom in the house. Flush toilets and everything, AND on the second floor to boot.

Woke up alone, since my wife and I got into a fight on New Year's Eve.
Since it was my Birthday I slept in a little.
Got up.
Took family to brunch.
They took me duck pin bowling. It was more fun than I expected, though both my 11 year old and 8 year old beat my score.
Ate black eyed peas and cornbread.
Had a fire in the fire place.

All and All it started bad and ended up being a pretty good day.

Ate chocolate, slobbed on the sofa, watched Sean Connery on the DVD - twice!

As designated sober person driving home from New Years party, I was very tired.

I went to the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery.

So you're driving through the foresty bits of the Scottish borders and suddenly there's a huge Buddhist temple appears out of the trees, take-your-breath-away beautiful. The place and its surroundings are peaceful and, for me, the minute I walk in there I feel a sense of peace and this huge tranquil space opening up in my head.

Half-past ten, lighting of 1000 butterlamps; half-past eleven, chanting of prayers in the temple (I'm not a Buddhist and don't understand what's being said but the sound and the devotion just moves me); ten-to twelve, lights dimmed and twenty minutes of almost-silence for meditation, just the low hum of some chanting their mantra; ten-past twelve, lights back up and everyone wishing each other Happy New Year, with smiles and hugs (and not pissed!); Tibetan monks laughing, touching foreheads, slapping each other on the back.

Waah! Waah! I wanna go back!

Wow...I didn't do anything so memorable as that.

I cleaned house some, and went to a movie with my family.

Now, the night before was much more memorable, having been paid to sing and have fun! But still, that can't beat hearing Whale song above water. :D

Gutbucketeer:

I'm glad that your day turned out better than it started. You message brought back some painful Holidays I had when my kids were little. Holidays are great, if you've got peace at home. Painful, if you don't. I have it all now. I pray that you get yours, too..

Since 'Mudge, Jeri and I had a quiet lobster dinner the night before (with my pickled herring in sour cream for dessert) and Tom and I, at least, were asleep by 10:30, we did our partying on New Year's Day at the farm of a displaced Mississippian here in the heart of Yankee land. Bluegrass and O'Carolan and a bit of other music. Country ham, hog hocks, black eyed peas, etcet, etcet, but I'm pleased to say somebody (not me, either!) brought the herring. Gotta have herring.

New Year's Day was a travel day for me. Although the flight home from St. Louis to St. Paul is less than 2 hours, all the associated ritual – packing, saying goodbye to relatives, driving to the airport, turning in the rental car, arriving at the airport 2 hours early to accommodate security procedures (2 hours was a lot more than necessary, in my estimation), then the cab ride home, stowing away all the loot – left me wanting to do nothing more than veg out, pet the cats, open mail, and catch up on the newspapers.

The trip to St. Louis was unforgettable, however. My childhood home has been sold, and my mother is in a nursing home, so we slept in the house for the last time, and sorted through mom's papers looking for a few essential records (like her car title!) and mementos. Mom kept everything. Christmas cards, receipts for every repair and every major purchase, bank statements going back many years, post cards, birthday cards, calendars, and more recently, after her memory began to fail, countless (and redundant) notes to herself about doctor's appointments, medications, birthdays, and so on.

There were a few pleasant surprises. My mom had several letters written to her by her father, who died when I was about 8 years old. I had never seen anything written by him before, and I barely remember him. I saved those to read later. I found a family bible that contains records of a branch of the family I knew nothing about. And I acquired several ancient photos, like the one of the log cabin my great-grandparents lived in.

Hoddesdon Crownsmen danced and performed a mummerss play at the Crown, Buntingford. This was followed by a singaround with some outstanding singers. This is an annual event so maybe local catters might join us next year.
Have a happy one,
Keith

My mother told me when I waslittle that whatever you do on New Years Day, you do all the year round, I know its probably an old wives tale, but even now, I try to ensure that I don't do anything too silly! This year, we enjoyed the company of the friends who were unable to drive home from our Party, we sang, drank and had a lovely day, chatting about old times, old frineds etc. I even managed to put down the words to a song Ive been planning to write for a while. Hope for a good 2002 to you all, Lucy

Stripped off - the fresh paint that was peeling off all the newly plastered walls until 9pm when next door's distraught teenage daughter (after injuries) decided to finally run away from home via our house. Spent next three hours skulking around with her, hiding from the curtain-less windows (hadn't got as far as the gloss painting) avoiding very aggressive vengeful DAD circling the house - managed to sneak her out undercover at 11.45 to a safe house and then fell into bed with a migraine.

Spent New Year's Day in the pub - which after 10 years of faithfully watching the Morrising from the pavement decided to enter and Hey! realised that this is where all the local musicians congregate - it was a bit like a Sidmouth session at its best!

I played at the, 9th Annual Bishops Castle New Years Day Zydebash, in Exeter, Road Island. This is probably the 5th or 6th year, I've had the pleasure of taking part in this. It's just a great way to start the year, DANCING.

Same as Snuffy - morris dancing, mumming, singing and drinking and eating - but I wasn't up so late on New Year's Eve. I then partied on 2 Jan (MY BIRTHDAY!) and got a bit tired and emotional. Its nice to have a normal day now!

Oh, the summer is a coming ...

Its not a castle in the true sense of the word. It's more of a traditional New England farm, but it's Brian Bishops castle I suppose. Never the less it's probably the best Zydeco Dance Party you're gonna find in New England, if that makes any sense.

Watched the firework display down on the beach ( everybody dressed in white as it's traditional here, went to a friends house to eat, drink and be merry, rolled in drunk at 5 a.m. and then slept through to 5 in the evening. Watched TV for all of 2 minutes. Read a book and felt satisfied with my beginning of 2002.

HAPPY 2002 EVERYBODY!!
